Apocalypse X-Men: Apocalypse Box Office Prediction Thread - Part 4

I wanna see the X-men in action as a team, taking on "minion" type enemies. We've never really gotten that before. If you have plentiful, easy to defeat enemies in a scene, that allows you to show your hero characters using their powers in really cool ways. Closest we've ever gotten to that was Nightcrawler and wolverine in X2. I was hoping the Sentinels would be like that but it wasn't so.

First Class was pretty much how an X-men vs Brotherhood fight should be.

I think the key to First Class is that Fassbender and McAvoy shared a lot of screen time together. They were seperated way too much in the next two films.

Yeah definitely. I loved that. Unfortunately it was characters like Azazel, Banshee, "Angel", Riptide, and Havok though. Lol

The X-Men have never fought cannon fodder before that's for sure. It would be cool if they fought robots or aliens or something, just so we could have those great moments that the Avengers do. I'd be down with more FC style fights again too. Imagine what Vaughn could do with all the A-listers. (Or a more action oriented director)

The one opportunity they had to fight cannon fodder was DOFP, and they were all just slaughtered there unfortunately.

I was hoping that the past Sentinels would get torn up by Wolverine... Until I saw that he had bone claws and that was out the window. Lol

Umm, I can understand the tendency to want to forget it, but X3 did happen.

That was my beef with the climax of DOFP, it was, well, anticlimactic.

Yeah, the genre has truly exceeded Singer's capabilities as a director. I liked Apocalypse well enough, but in today's landscape I can see why it wasn't up to par. Action shots like those embarrass the majority of the spectacle in this latest film.

If you say so, since that is Whedon's one trick.

Cyclops blasting through Sentinels, Storm hovering in the air bringing the lightning, you see Wolverine in the background on the shoulders of one of them hacking away (he was thrown by Colossus earlier), Beast is flipping around doing his thing, Nightcrawler teleporting from Sentinel to Sentinel dodging blasts. Rogue flying in the air punching them right in the face, Gambit throwing his kinetic cards. :hmr:

The ending should have had a sequence like this in the Danger Room. Add this to the missed opportunity list. :csad:

As to the box office, we may just have to admit that the franchise at this point is not a billion dollar grossing franchise. And that is okay. As long as Fox plans accordingly. This is a 16 year old franchise. It will have its ups and downs, like all franchises. The MCU will have a down turn eventually. Will it become one. Perhaps. But despite what fanboys think, it isn't easy to hit a billion, especially with a strong dollar.

I think the X-men can handle an underperformer and not feel the need to reboot. Especially with that nice, young, cheap cast they just got.

I agree about the billion and fanboys. I could imagine a movie in a rebooted series scoring a billion at some point. Skyfall did in the James Bond series. But, it's really hard and a lot of things to have to fall your way. It's worth noting that audience and zeitgeist meeting vision seems to be helpful. Some of that depends on luck, though.

That's another thing that's underutilized in the X-films. They literally have a built in excuse for a crazy action sequence that can be ANYTHING they want.

I don't quit remember anything like that in AoU. But, I didn't exactly see it a lot of times. But, when it is probably a good 10 min of Apocalypse standing there while others shoot their stuff at him, that is the kind of beam spam issue I'm talking about. The Godzilla movies in the 90s kind of fell into that trap, partially due to the suit, where most of the monster action was them shooting their beams at each other.
It is the part when Iron Man, Thor and Vision use beams to attack Ultron.

Pretty certain that was a significantly smaller amount of time than what happened in Apocalypse.
Yeah definitely. There was a lot more "beam attacking" against Apocalypse. It went on for a while.

"I think the X-men can handle an underperformer and not feel the need to reboot. Especially with that nice, young, cheap cast they just got."

It's not just an underperformer, though. It's this cast and going without Wolverine seemed to play like "First Class." That raises questions about expectations and performance over the long haul.

What kind of gross can this cast get when most things go right? If the box office performance has a ceiling of say 165, is that enough for Fox?

Would they want something that can do in the low 200s, as X2 and X3 did, or potentially even more?

Yeah, and the airport scene in CW is simply magnificent and the greatest scene I've ever seen.

Blink, Storm, Iceman, Sunspot, and Colossus got to show off in the future. But you are right, the "core members" never got to show off their powers in DoFP.

I actually think First Class did a great job of showcasing everyone in the finale. Vaughn is a naturally better action director than Singer in that regard.

Hopefully Justice League at the very least will have a few moments like that.

I honestly don't really get this. I thought this scene was terrible personally. Fast cut incomprehensible CGI filled action scene with no suspense and zero challenges for the main characters.
