You seem to be operating under this bizarre strawman that it's one extreme or the other. Especially when Marvel has shown the capacity to have a lot of superheroes in their films while still giving them meaningful arcs.
I think there is a bit of a conflict between serving a story or serving a character. Marvel have really set a standard for its depiction of characters (minus a few exceptions) but I'd argue the X-Men series at its best boasts more complicated themes and more compelling villains.
Basically I haven't minded Singer's approach to the characters as long as the films have been good. I've felt more during this franchise than the MCU.
