You seem to be operating under this bizarre strawman that it's one extreme or the other. Especially when Marvel has shown the capacity to have a lot of superheroes in their films while still giving them meaningful arcs.

I think there is a bit of a conflict between serving a story or serving a character. Marvel have really set a standard for its depiction of characters (minus a few exceptions) but I'd argue the X-Men series at its best boasts more complicated themes and more compelling villains.

Basically I haven't minded Singer's approach to the characters as long as the films have been good. I've felt more during this franchise than the MCU.

Directors that are great superhero directors are probably terrible directors in general. I'm sure the Russos are capable of doing a lot of different kind of action/thriller stuff. Someone that can only director your run of the mill slap stick superhero flick is probably not someone that goes on to direct a lot of superhero movies let alone movies.

All these guys are pretty versatile, from Nolan to Singer. Snyder is your example of a guy that is a good superhero director and a ****ty director that will be unemployed soon at this rate. MoS and BvS can be ripped out of a comic page, but they are directed like ****. Still, if he can direct fight scenes like Batfleck vs Cavil, I'd still pay a premium for that if I'm in the mood.

no, he doesn't. X2 was clearly a team movie. And X1 used Wolverine AND Rogue to introduce the audience/us to the X-Men from their outsider perspective.

it was Ratner and X3 that shifted the focus entirely on Wolverine and killed off all the other X-Men.

X-Men: First Class (produced by Singer) and X-Men: Apocalypse barely had Wolverine in it.

After seeing this movie, I REALLY want to see more from this "new generation" of X-Men. I love where the film left them and want to see more adventures with them. I hope this film does well enough to justify that and not cause FOX to panic and completely reboot.

I never really understood this argument...Singer created some great adaptations! X2 and Days of Future Past are perfect X-Men movies! A fan couldn't hoped for more. He understood the source material beautifully and made fantastic movies out of it.

I don't see any other superhero movies which are closer to the source material than Singer. These movies are never direct adaptions (besides maybe Watchmen).

Yes, I'm a Storm fan and believe me that sucks!

But Singer gave me extremely elaborate versions of Magneto, Xavier, Wolverine, Mystique and (now) Jean Grey which compensate in my eyes for everything else. He does not care about a lot of characters but the ones he chooses are masterful adaptations of the source materials!

Okay but how many movies does it take to tell Magneto, Xavier and Wolverine's stories? Seven films? How many years does it take to tell their arcs? Does it take 16 years to tell their stories? We're talking about an even distribution of focus on the other X-Men. Storm is by far, one of the most recognizable and popular X-Men in the world. She has been the female face of Marvel for decades. Yet, you wouldn't know that by the way she's been treated in these movies. She's still a "piece of furniture" as the poster put it--right up to this latest film (and I really like Alexandra Shipp). What a waste.

This franchise seems to have reached an impasse with the fans. Focusing on 3 or 4 mutants over and over and over and over again doesn't compensate for ignoring a dozen other characters.

I personally think Marvel Studios is supremely successful because of Kevin Feige, not the traffic cop directors.

People are gonna not like this comparison, but I think Civil War proves how to make an ensemble film effective; while some characters will get a clear cut arc throughout the story, it's impossible to give that for every character. For those more second string characters (Hawkeye, Ant-Man, etc.), give them those big awesome moments and memorable dialogue. They may not be full of depth, but they'll resonate with the audience and make it feel like a true ensemble action movie.

Exactly. The X-Men series is the single longest running CBM series at this time. Yet for all the time we've had these films we still don't know 75% of the X-Men. Case in point:

That's a false statement. The success of TWS and CW have a lot to do with the Russo Bros. and the writers. If what you said is right, then there won't be any movie like TDW and IM2, two of the movies that didn't do well in MCU critically. Basically every director is hired to "take order" right?
