I guess my question is, attracting JLaw fans/female demographic while alienating X-Men fans vs. attracting X-Men fans in general? Is the former really that much a better decision?

The alienated X-Men fans usually will still show up anyway. I mean isn't that what hardcore fans do? XD They nitpick, they grumble, but they will still be there on opening weekend (either to praise it or rip it apart). But if you don't get the word out to people outside of the hardcore fans, they won't show up. Period.

I don't think JLaw is alienating anyone in these films. If you don't like her acting, fine. Or don't like Mystique/Raven etc. But is that really going to be the deal breaker for any of these films? She hasn't even been that heavily featured in the prior trailers thus far. They've been very Apocalypse heavy.

This complaint sounds overblown. Would've had the same complaint had Hugh been in the trailers too from fanboys. GA would've loved it though.

The thing is, then number of supposed X-Men fans being alienated is ultimately negligible. If it were otherwise, DOFP wouldn't have succeeded.

I understand the annoyance with large emphasis on Jennifer Lawrence, but to be honest it's just good marketing.

Lawrence 'going to war' was a concept that worked well for The Hunger Games which made nearly $3 billion worldwide. Mystique literally says "let's go to war" in the second trailer.

Plus you have the fact Apocalypse is opening against Alice in Wonderland 2 which is a female-lead film and will likely take a good chunk of female audience that weekend. Having the focus on Lawrence actually gives female viewers multiple options, instead of it being your typical male-skewed superhero movie.
Very good point you made there.
Its both. Because I came across a Michael Fassbender fan account and was not happy that JLaw's dominance in promotion. And the others just want to see the X-Men, like Psylocke. Its interesting to read people's opinion about the film outside of this forum.

There's also a JLAw fan on Twitter defending her that us X-Men stans always blame JLaw/Raven yet no one is complaining that Beast isn't always blue.

I can understand a little but we literally have just got the XMen team the FC era should be finished by this movie so I can see why the focus is there. Of course I want to see more Jean,Psylocke,Storm and Jubilee more than anything but it's like an intro to them. Also JLaw is a very popular figure and as much as I hate to say it she will get butts in the seats so it is smart.

"Alienating X-Men fans"? The only X-Men fans that are going to feel "alienated" are the ones who are already ********* about the movies and have already made up their minds that they're unhappy about this one.

Hehehe so many posters online on this thread and no trailer... I feel like we have been Rick rolled. Hopefully it comes up soon

So by marketing Jennifer more, they are broadening their appeal. They already know the people on this forum, etc. will be going to see the movie regardless of how big a role Jennifer has. It's pretty smart marketing to be honest.

In an ideal world, the X-men franchise shouldn't have to rely on star power to sell these movies. Guardians of the Galaxy are full of up-and-comers. And they didn't even flaunt the fact that they've got Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel in their trailers (IIRC).

And it shouldn't have to rely on marketing from a recent YA book, one that's been on the decline since that first movie.

But I guess we don't live in that ideal world. And that makes me sad. :(

you know what Jennifer Lawrence was also heavily featured in DOFP and that didn't seem to help the film to outgross X3. I mean, she was the most popular actress in 2014, and if her star power is really that strong to sell a movie like X-Men, it should have also outgrossed Maleficent.

IMO, they are giving Jennifer Lawrence too much push in marketing once again when they could focus the marketing on characters itself.

But anyway the panel ended a few minutes ago so I guess fingers crossed for tomorrow lol

If GOTG had had a star like Lawrence in it, you can be 100% certain the marketing would have pushed that. Nobody in that cast is comparable to her.

Yea it would be nice to put more focus on the characters and I feel it's a start with this movie that will continue throughout the rest of the franchise. A lot of these characters are bigger than the actor/actress playing them so getting the character right and done justice will make for a better audience.

Exactly.

Honestly IDK if people here really think more X-Men fans wouldn't be cheering if one of the reactions from CinemaCon was "Storm sounds and looks great"? But we haven't gotten that. People will have to wait till they see the movie to get ahold of Storm.

Kinda figured we weren't getting another trailer today. Ah well, hopefully it's released tomorrow or early next week.

That's mostly what I'm sad about I so wanted to hear her voice, so I can understand what your saying now.

Let's be honest though, If they were really making her the center of the marketing, they would give her first billing like with Hugh for DoFP and she would have been in the center of the final poster instead of James.

I think the heavy push in marketing is very significantly skewed towards Apocalypse and the Horsemen for this film though. You have the Horsemen featurette, the lovely Horsemen art posters, the first two trailers were about Apocalypse. So they have been very focused on these characters.

JLaw only seems to have a huge push because she's in her human form and is at the forefront of the posters depicting the X-Men team. But she seems to be about equal to Xavier (and maybe even less so considering she doesn't even appear on the V Energy Drink marketing posters, nor that advertisement with the cars)

Now if only there was more focus on our junior X-Men in the marketing...

Look at Deadpool, they weren't trying to sell a Ryan Reynolds movie but a Deadpool movie.

People on Twitter said that it's the best trailer so far, and that the action tops all the earlier movies, and you are talking about JLaw?

If it's an epic trailer it will sell the movie, Jennifer in lead or not.

Some people also said that Wolverine wasn't there. If that's true then shame on El Maysomething. That's pretty embarrassing on him, considering how wide the rumors went.

JLaw sells to younger teen girls (and others of course) who maybe wouldn't want to see an X-Men movie. She's no doubt the most recognizable face in the movie. It's marketing 101. That being said, I never cared for her acting and would have preferred a different actress but it's not like she's done a horrible job. This all shouldn't be as big a deal that's it's being made out to be. If the movie is good then who cares.

Umm, Reynolds wasn't exactly a box office draw. Of course, Marvel forgets the big actress who has great box office draw...
