Dark Phoenix X-Men: Dark Phoenix News and Speculation Thread - Part 10

I think I would like some action. The X-Men films haven’t really had any big scenes that sprawl across two pages so it would be nice to get one

Less action means not as frequent. 3 rather than the 5 or more act structure.

I don't even know why, but I have such a good feeling about this film. Everything I've seen and heard about it sounds stellar. Who knows, maybe Kinberg will silence the naysayers. Well, those who haven't made their minds already.

Same!

Guys stay on topic. I no joke thought i was in a MCU x-men thread for a few seconds LOL

Yours isn't an on topic post either, is it?

I just think it's a pointless effort trying to censor conversations by sticking strictly to one subject. It's a discussion forum and conversations inevitably go to different places and different topics are brought up: Kinberg's resume, JLaw's acting skills, animated series, the source material, comparisons to other CBMs, influences from other CBMs and studios, and, of course, the future of X-Men with the Disney/Fox merge.

Let the conversation flow. We're still talking about the X-Men and we're being civil.

She said to look out for the
island scene. The costumes we've seen do show up early in the movie; space rescue. Quicksilver isn't stealing the show, but there is some notable teamup with Nightcrawler. Cyclops vs Beast at one point. There isn't a lot of action (like standard 3 act stuff), but there is a lot of power uses. The death in the movie is pretty much who folks here wanted to die so badly. Jean had voices in her head before she killed this person. Skrulls look scary. Overall, according to her, it was miles better than Apocalypse.

That's all I could get.

So if that source is true:

1) The game changing twist is [BLACKOUT]indeed Raven's death[/BLACKOUT]

And most concerning...
2) They'll actually portray Jean [BLACKOUT]as a mentally ill person? To a point where she'll be hearing voices? Ugh... I'm not a fan of that. When I heard Turned saying she was studying schizophrenia, I didn't think they're going to that path. Unless this "voice" is from another character/entity, I'm not a fan of the idea of Jean being this mentally ill dangerous person that needs to be "put down".[/BLACKOUT]

We'll see...

Maybe it's [blackout]Lilandra's voice. She's a telepath, isn't she?[/blackout]

Yeah, I hope it's [BLACKOUT]Chastain's character manipulating her. Sounds better.[/BLACKOUT]

but are [BLACKOUT]Skrulls known for that[/BLACKOUT]?

What did your source say about Chastain's character? Is she [BLACKOUT]indeed a skrull version of Lilandra?[/BLACKOUT]

Because despite of who Chastain is playing, her role is already known, right? Didn't they confirm in the EW magazine that she'll be manipulating Jean?

Despite [BLACKOUT]of what the Skrulls are known for, they weren't even in the original story[/BLACKOUT]. I think it's fair to assume there will be some major changes from the souce material.

I'm starting to get the feeling that [BLACKOUT]Skrulls will be alien vers of the Sentinels.
So, who ever Chastain was portraying before she became a Skrull could have possibly been a mutant that the Skrull absorbed abilities from.
You do apparently get to that see that violent scene before being replaced.[/blackout]

This series really got its stuff together after X-Men Origins. I've enjoyed every film in this series since First Class.

"He told me the whole plot of the movie. And it's not good, it's not good. It's not good, they still can't pull off the Phoenix Saga."

:csad:
Yeah that wasn't encouraging at all.

Also, the "hearing voices" thing could be her telepathy going awry like in X2. If it is actual voices telling her what to do and stuff then yeah I might have a problem.

I think it's gonna be well made (let's face it, they've had long enough to perfect the technical aspects) but also quite a few headscratching moments...

I do not know who jason inman
but I honestly do not believe they screwed up again, I do not expect a perfect movie, but I'm pretty sure they're going to have more hits than mistakes in that movie, most people and journalists with sources are saying it's a really good movie, so I'm going wait..

I got the vibe that he was talking about the adaptation when he said they didn't get Phoenix right. And given the infos we got, the story seems to be drastically different from the original one.

Anyway, there are a lot of details missing from all those sources. No word on Dazzler, Sunfire or Lamar Johnson and Cudmore's characters, for instance. Of course they can all be Jubilee/Psylocke kind of characters.

I'm starting to think the problem may be with the source material. Marvel went to the "female superhero becomes so powerful she has to be put down" well on multiple occasions, and I'm not sure it plays as well nowadays.

As an aside, I recall reading the X-Men letters pages a zillion years ago, and girls who wrote in were thrilled Marvel finally had a female hero that could stand toe to toe with a Herald to Galactus. Oh well. I'm sure Jim Shooter would have found a way to save Thor if he ate a sun.

That's what I'm thinking, it seems like he said it's no good based on the fact that it's not the story we're all familiar with. I don't really care for all the changes they seem to have made and wish they just followed the source but as long as it's entertaining and done well, I won't mind. Won't be the first time they've drastically changed plot points from the source material.

Got it
when I translate to my local language, it's a bit different, I get a little confused, but that should be what he meant.

It's true, it's all very "vague" so far.

Well they have taken a lot of liberties with the source material. This isn't sounding too comic accurate aside from the space mission and a possible incident at Jean's family home...

I would agree with that if he didn't also share his distaste for the plot. Tbh what I've been reading isn't impressive but execution is key.

Well, I'm a man so I'm really not the one to say how women should be portrayed, but I think the story could be very empowering. Give it to talented women to write and direct and they can make it work.

For me, the best part of being so different is that Marvel can adapt it maybe 10 years from now, and still make it very different just by following the comics.

I honestly think all the alien and space stuff in this movie will be just like the "Giant Apocalypse" in XMA. They'll give it to us, but not as we think. Just more "grounded". Apocalypse couldn't be giant because it was too unrealistic for them. Of course the rest of the characters with superpowers is super realistic.

I know that some have joked around that Dark Phoenix is one big metaphor for PMS so I can kinda see where that would come from, lol. But it's a pretty deep storyline nonetheless.

That's a good analogy. I remember they said Apocalypse would be able to alter himself at a molecular level which is a good enough justification for him being able to go giant, but they saved it for an Astral Plane sequence. Idk why -- Watchmen pulled it off, and it was a much more serious movie than XMA. The Astral Plane sequence is one of few inspired things about Apocalypse, but it still seemed limited by either budget or imagination, the cartoons got more creative with the Astral Plane fights.

I understand the issue of Apocalypse being overpowered, but the movie doesn't really solve the problem, they just have Phoenix poof him out.

- I've heard it's quite good...focusing more on the drama...and halfway through the film, one of our beloved characters...oh...wait...that would be telling...

@XMenTea

-I hope it's beast bc not one cares for that character, Magneto and Mystique are better characters for the stories. (Probably it's mystique)

-I didn’t say WHAT happens, but it’s not what you’re thinking...

Robert Burnett is unreliable in these scoops.

All these leaks seem to confirm the same things. I feel like we know already the entire plot by now. lol...It really rubs me the wrong way that they have chosen the Skrulls over the Shi'Ar. I really don't get why. They could have easily update the Shi'Ar's appearances and make them look more "otherworldly" and give them image inducers or some alien tech to hide their true appearance in public. The Shi'Ar and their complicated relationship to the Phoenix Force and Jean Grey is such an important part of the X-Men lore!

I would have also loved to see Jessica Chastain as one of the classic and iconic X-Men villains like Emma Frost, Mrs. Sinister/Mr. Sinister or (Lady) Mastermind. But I have no excitement to find out that she is a green skrull queen. The only thing that gives me hope is that Chastain could also be Mrs. Sinister is the end credit scene of Apocalypse, that Chastain uses the term "clinical" and a vet metaphor to describe her character and the pale skin of her appearance...I'm praying to the Shi'Ar gods that she is not a Skrull...

Honestly, if they would liked to have used a green shapeshifting alien race infiltrating earth they could have easily chosen THE BROOD!

All of these options are more fitting then shoehorning the skrulls into this movie. I am also wondering if the big reveal is that Mystique is actually a skrull and not a mutant. Gosh,...at least let it be Beast. His character is so boring and bland that the big reveal that he was replaced by a skrull infiltrating the X-Men years ago and imprisoned somewhere would at least redeem him for future movies...

Its a Simon Kinberg story. At this point, I'm surprised but still not surprised. The X-Men have a large rogues gallery and they went with the Fantastic Four villains.

Not surprised.

For me it's 100% an imagination problem, not budget. Look at Legion. Now can you imagine Noah Hawley with that amount of money? And again, Legion is a proof that big budget isn't required to make something cool.

Oh, that final battle is so underwhelming and disappointing to me. Not imaginative at all.
