Dark Phoenix X-Men: Dark Phoenix News and Speculation Thread - - - - - - Part 15

The international trailer just played for me as an ad on the begining of the YouTube video.

One thing I like it the improvement of VFX of Nightcrawlers bamf effect. I felt in Apoclypse it was too wispy and the smoke evaporated too quickly.
However when her teleports Jean it has a density to it and stays for longer + I like how the yellow from their costumes mixes into the black of the smoke.

Here's my question: With Dark Phoenix's post-production team, now housed in Disney, will Marvel execs have final say in the editing room rather than Kinberg and his production team? Wouldn't they be tempted to tamper with the final product?

Meaning, that 3 more months until released a lot can still change, can't it?

I think it possible they could alter some aspects of it (not reshoots but alter some of the editing, hand some of the VFX load to another company, etc); ultimately they benefit from the film being profitable.

However, I doubt they will be major alterations. Even if it is 3 months away heavy editing would then delay/cause scene to be re-scored by music.

Ultimately, I think it more likley (if they are going to put some money behind it) that they would work on makerting.

but they already own it... so that point is a bit moot, no?

Disney? Sure. But Marvel Studios isn't involved with the production. If Feige and his team get involved in Writer/Director/Producer Simon Kinberg's Dark Phoenix they have to shoulder at least some of the blame if it falls apart. Just like Whedon with JL.

What’s your source?
You know I can’t give that away lol
There will also be a premier in New York in two weeks before it comes out!!
There is also a test screening for the Disney execs like real soon..I get my info from people that know people that know peaopl that has a cousin that knows somebody at FOX lol

Yes that nightcrawler is effect is dope af...did you also notice the seatbelt still standing??? If not watch it again

How did Kitty even gain the ability she had in DOFP? I don't remember it being explained, and it just made no sense to me.

It's one of the mysteries in that film, lol...

I love DoFP but it does have a few odd bits. Where is Mystique in the future (never mentioned), where does Kitty's time travel power come from, and how on Earth does Kitty manage to just sit there and hold on to Wolverine for the many days/weeks he is away in 1973. The 1973 stuff happens over quite a long period, at least several days.

Someone mentioned on here that Kitty's power is based on 'quantum tunnelling' in which particles can pass through a solid barrier. During that process, particles can end up bouncing around and going faster than the speed of light (and hence backwards in time). I love that cool bit of science but the film never mentioned it. The only hint was Xavier's voiceover asking 'can we evolve enough to survive', suggesting secondary mutations.

It also bothers me how the Sentinels can fly straight into the headwind of Storm's blizzard.

But, hey ho, it's still a very good movie.

I'm really not sure about Dark Phoenix.

I always just took Kitty's powers as being a secondary mutation. She can phase through physical space so then she developed "phasing through time" (though secondary mutations seem to be random; Emma's diamond form compared to her primary telepathy).
A line of dialogue from Wolverine/Storm asking how she learned to do it would have been all that's as needed but I don't think it destroys the film.

Thats because MCU have done great jobs in giving their library of characters individual focus. But, imo, they have not on the whole, been able to put these characters in well crafted, compelling stories with substance like Fox has with X2, FC, DOFP and Logan. I fear this is what will happen with MCU xmen, theyl give us a lot of diverse character focus that has been denied under Fox, but they will be in formulaic thin stories where the directors have tight guidelines. I want to have the whole package, diverse characters on screen but also in thematically strong stories without holding back.

I don't think you'r going to get a lot of bleak, edgy stuff in a mainstream summer blockbuster made for international appeal (including in countries where English isn't a main language and lengthy/complex subtitles are not a good idea). I do want to see some depth and seriousness though and I agree that some of the MCU stuff is a bit superficial, but I am also less interested in those existing MCU characters so I need to see an MCU X-Men movie before making a final judgement.

Fox thought they were being edgy by adding in a contrived f-bomb because the one in First Class worked well. They didn't develop the universe enough, falling back on Magneto, Stryker etc, without developing other characters or bringing in new ones.

They got stuck in a loop. We saw the Weapon X sequence three times (X1 flashbacks, Origins and in Apocalypse), we saw Caliban twice, Emma Frost twice, Magneto went through family tragedy three times (X1, First Class, Apocalypse), we are getting a second go at Dark Phoenix. They had no clear map of the world they were building or where they were going.

That I could see ending up on Hulu

I really don't want to subscribe to Hulu to see New Mutants. I'd like to see it on Netflix thoug (unlikely though that is).

I also think New Mutants should be packaged with Dark Phoenix in a Blu-ray special double set, and also included in an X-Men: Endsong collection of all the movies in the franchise. Each film should get special director cuts as well, though it will never happen. That would be my dream.

I think Hulu or Disney+ are where it'd end up if it doesn't hit theaters. Maybe they release it as is and hope it makes some money

According to THR today:

It's not long until 2021. We're already a quarter of the way through 2019. DP comes out in June, there will be New Mutants (possibly) in August, the Blu-ray editions and ultimate box set, then we'll be almost in 2020. It's only a year from then when we might hear casting talk and see a teaser of something X-related

Idk why but I'm really not happy that Chastain is a mash up and not a comic villain by name, from what I've been told. The adversary should be a big name.

Should be, yes. But when it's all compressed into one movie where you can't have Lilandra or Shi'ar, there's the risk of wasting a character or adapting them in a bad way. No one wants to see a butchered Cassandra Nova or Lilandra.

I wouldn't be surprised if Selene is never named as such, not even in the credits. Feige/Marvel would not be happy with this adaptation. May as well call her Revanche or Kwannon, since she's essentially a Psylocke stand-in.

Actually not giving her a name is less confusing than making her a mashup of other characters, IMO.

Well, she's a lead character played by a big name, so I would think they could try to come up with some sort of name. Crediting Jessica Chastain as playing 'Alien 1' or something similar seems rather weird.

It's crazy how the shoe is on the other foot now. Before when we complained about the X-franchise, a lot of fans here would say things to the effect of, "Oh well, guess you gotta deal with it or don't watch the films!" Now that an end really is coming to the Fox-verse, I feel kinda bad for some of you. I don't feel bad for the franchise at all, though!

Exactly. Just a reminder that these are the same people constantly telling members here that they should wait for Dark Phoenix to come out before they should be able to say if it's going to be good or not. (Before the narrative was "Wait for the teaser." Then "Wait for the trailer.") Now we are hearing all the little foibles of the MCU (in a Dark Phoenix thread!) for why Feige's X-men can't work.

The ultimate irony of it all is that some of the same people telling psy and the OT fans to move on can't move on from the First Class cast being booted out.

Especially from an actress whose constant praise of Kinberg's script is that "Finally, after years of looking for a 3-dimensional comic character to play in a movie, I've found the perfect one!"

That sounds exactly like how it was with Fant4stic: "Wait for the poster", "Wait for the teaser", "Wait for the trailer", "Wait for the reviews", "Wait for theatre", "Wait for the BR/ DVD release", "Wait for the sequel", "Wait for the reboot" etc. :o

Fox have been no way perfect let me reaffirm that. What im getting at is that Fox has a less stringent framework which would have allowed X-men stories to be adapted in the most faithful way to the source material (with the right writer/director), that you wont get with Disney. The studio itself is more flexible on the tone of the content they put out, its more adult orientated, directors with creative control and not tightly streamlined as other studio are and im talking non-comic book movies as well, likes of The Martian, Kingsman, The Revenant, Alita to name a recent few. A small example you mentioned is the F bomb in FC. Would you see that in a Disney movie. Would you see Wolverines brutal claw slashing from Apocalypse and Logan? Would you see Logan being allowed to smoke or see Xavier in DOFP openly having a drug addiction story arc. When Xmen stories start to be adapted, will we see e for extinction, mutant massacre, age of apocalypse done with the same faithful dark nature of the source or will they be watered down like gotg and Ragnarok.

What’s your source?
There's an article from Variety about the Fox Merger. In it there's a section that discusses how the marketing for Dark Phoenix is being hindered by the merger. One of the members of the marketing department said "We know when we are dropping a trailer, but we are nowhere near where we should be at this time."

I don't really need to hear swearing (especially when it feels forced like Xavier's f-bomb in DoFP and Cable's c-bomb in Deadpool 2). Nor do i need to see brutal slashing with blood spurting, heads rolling and entrails flying.

The X-Men comics (nor the animated series) don't focus on all this sadistic violence and nihilistic brutality. It's not an essential part of who the X-Men are. It's some sort of studio mandate to make everything cruel and horrible.

We've had that in the Fox version anyway, so it's time for a change. I'll gladly trade endless grisly gore and body butchery for a better spread of character development.

If you really need to see people being torn apart with blood and guts flying, then get into hardcore horror.

Fox is more flexible? The same studio that told Gavin Hood to repaint the Hudson's barn in X-men: Origins Wolverine? The same studio that got Kinberg to ghost-direct over Trank? The same studio that forced a drastic 3rd act change on Mangold's The Wolverine? The same studio that's delayed New Mutants three times?

The same studio you guys are saying has told Kinberg to change his Dark Phoenix plans, even before the Disney deal?

I see the beginning of a possible escape goat excuse, to blame Disney/MCU should this film bomb hard...
I guess since we've heard things like, "had Trank been allowed to make the movie he wanted, it would have been great", this too should be expected.

I'm requoting a comment @Frankeh made earlier.
This will be Kinberg come June 2019:

It's Vanity Fair not Variety.

If you reread the article, that meeting was held with mid February.

Meaning the trailer that they are talking about during that meeting was the one released on February 27th, trailer 2. The one we've already seen.

There very well could be a 3rd trailer but this article is not the proof that there is one.
