Dark Phoenix X-Men: Dark Phoenix News and Speculation Thread - - - - - - Part 15

Here's my question: With Dark Phoenix's post-production team, now housed in Disney, will Marvel execs have final say in the editing room rather than Kinberg and his production team? Wouldn't they be tempted to tamper with the final product?

Meaning, that 3 more months until released a lot can still change, can't it?

They have for a while now. There’s nothing to change that wasn’t with reshoots, unless you want a levitating, beam firing grey race calling themselves the Shiar. That’s gone.

Kinberg had different ideas that you all would have loved but people need to get it through to their heads that he has A BOSS, several in fact, and when they order something happen (like turning two films into one and now that you can’t flesh out a central group, make them brainless invaders because that needs no setup, like our previously successful movie, Independence Day), he HAS TO do it. Fox was a business. Business has hierarchy. Place blame where’s blame is due, or is it because Feige’s name is recognizable but no one can name his Fox counterpart.

Especially from an actress whose constant praise of Kinberg's script is that "Finally, after years of looking for a 3-dimensional comic character to play in a movie, I've found the perfect one!"

I agree so much with this. She keeps using that in her interviews, as it was true at the time she told Kinberg she wanted to do it, but then it was condensed and the role changed in its entirety which is why she was basically the last one to start filming. She went from Lilandra, Majestrix of the Shiar Empire to Lilandra, give us the force and your resources to (insert any possible name here). Now people will be so confused. Her interview on Jimmy Fallon was just mind boggling for me.

Yikes.. if she does end up being a silly and nameless alien, we can call her LOLandra

I don't know. If I take the "plot leaks" as 100% authentic, it seems I both versions of the film had her ultimate goal being to utilise Jeans power to take over the Galaxy. That aspect it inherently one dimensional.

Chastains "praise" of the role seems to be the connection her character has with Jean; praising the apsects like passing bechdel test. Which to be fair we haven't seen a female villan in a comicbook film do that. (I mean I adore Hela, my face CBM villan, but she is pretty one dimensional in her goals).

I don't really need to hear swearing (especially when it feels forced like Xavier's f-bomb in DoFP and Cable's c-bomb in Deadpool 2). Nor do i need to see brutal slashing with blood spurting, heads rolling and entrails flying.

The X-Men comics (nor the animated series) don't focus on all this sadistic violence and nihilistic brutality. It's not an essential part of who the X-Men are. It's some sort of studio mandate to make everything cruel and horrible.

I wasnt specifically referring to brute violence rather the undercurrent of not shying away from darker themes involved with character arcs or story, which is present in ample amounts from many xmen sagas.

Even though i ain't crazy on R-rated movies. looking at those clips from logan there definitely is a more brutal realism to it. but yeah thats detail of violence you probably won't get under Disney. infact X-Men movies tend to use the F-word at least once because they can with PG13. Disney i don't think will ever use that word because of kids, parents and toys.

Really its just a level of whats acceptable for the studio.

At the last event she was at for DP she did seem genuinely excited about the film to the point she was probably saying more then she was allowed to about the movie, so if the role was changed i don't get the sense it was to that much of a disappointing degree for her.

Fox is more flexible? The same studio that told Gavin Hood to repaint the Hudson's barn in X-men: Origins Wolverine? The same studio that got Kinberg to ghost-direct over Trank? The same studio that forced a drastic 3rd act change on Mangold's The Wolverine? The same studio that's delayed New Mutants three times?

The same studio you guys are saying has told Kinberg to change his Dark Phoenix plans, even before the Disney deal?

as Sheldon says....

Bazinga! :funny:

That is one thing that I'm definitely worried about. Will the MCU actually take the time to adequately explore themes, and concepts. Winter Soldier, and Civil War both have a moral dilemma in the first act but then it gets completely overtaken by the end of the film.
In Civil War there's an actual debate with the Sokovia Accords, but somewhere in the second act the Accords debate takes a back seat to the Bucky storyline.

Winter Soldier starts with Cap feeling like the government is overstepping its bounds. However, his dilemma is somewhat tossed aside once it's revealed that Hydra's behind everything.

I do think the MCU's television efforts such as Daredevil do a good job of exploring mature themes. Maybe X-Men might be better suited for that format under their regime.

It’s fairly obvious Jessica signed on to do this film because she is good friends with Kinberg and she gets along with him. It’s the same reason feminist Chastain (in this era of female-empowerment with Oscar speeches from Regina King and Patricia Arquette vowing to work more with female filmmakers) would then tap her good friend, non-female Simon Kinberg to direct her all-female spy movie.

Yes, in signing on for Dark Phoenix she praised him as a great writer, but what exactly warrants that praise? Can his biggest fans even say Simon Kinberg is a “great writer?” Btw, the other role that passed Chastain’s Bechtel test was The Huntsman: Winter’s War, which is at 17% Rotten. So, get excited folks!

Is it any wonder why J Law would agree to return to a franchise she was all but ready to walk out of, so she can then be quickly killed off? It’s not “for the fans.” It’s because she is Kinby’s friend.

That’s probably how Simon “Ghhenosha” Kinberg would’ve pronounced Lilandra anyways.

I wonder if there will be a sort of transition period where Disney let Fox continue on its own? Im guessing not based off the layoffs today.

Both version that were filmed...I mentioned 3 namesakes, two of which were filmed, one of those being what we’re getting. You can’t sign onto something already shot. That requires a script. When it comes to that, however....

Well...she is an actress, with a Golden Globe win and 2 Oscar nominations, so one might say, a good one. They do get paid part of their salary for appearances and potentially back end deals contingent on box office. Why all the ‘is she/isn’t she’ before filming (when the rewrite and condensation was ordered) during filming, which she started at the end of, not part of the original proposal’s planned schedule and she luckily had enough time in her schedule that allowed for the ongoing rewrite to happen during filming. Remember when it was rumored that they went in with a vague script for the 3rd act?

We've had that in the Fox version anyway, so it's time for a change. I'll gladly trade endless grisly gore and body butchery for a better spread of character development.

If you really need to see people being torn apart with blood and guts flying, then get into hardcore horror.
Agreed.

The X-Men simply never reached their full potential under Fox and this movie looks no different. X-Men members need to have an actual personality, history and familiarity with each other, and yet the team itself is always a backdrop, especially in these prequels.

Giving up R-rated violence for that seems like a fair trade to me.

There definitely won’t be any more f-bombs, which is okay. It worked in First Class but was forced in Days of Future Past and Apocalypse. Logan will have to ditch the cigar, too.

What’s your source?

Common sense.

DP needs a lot of advertising and a final (more focused on the battles, the good stuff) trailer is the best way to get butts in theaters.

Expecting a panel at CinemaCon too.

I agree completely, though I think that Logan can still get away with a cigar here and there.

The final one might be more Jean centric, not that the full trailer and international trailer weren’t, but I expect the final trailer (if there is one) to emphasize from her POV, including some lighter moments expanding on her relationship to Scott first, then everyone else, then take us through her darkness. That’s probably the best they can go that represents the movie more accurately without setting up just another x-men movie. They ain’t in the title, this ain’t their film, they’re a prop (unfortunately the same can be said for movies that did have them in the movie). You don’t want to accidentally sell a prop by giving out all its good moments.

Since when have the X-men been R-rated anyway? Seems like it’s just ramblings of people that didn’t get their way so they’ll complain about anything and everything, even if it doesn’t make a lick of sense.

Hypocrite much!

I think the final trailer will have more battle sequences.

We really haven't seen much of the battles:

- the one Quicksilver shot at Jeans house is all we've seen of actual fighting at the Jean House

- all we've seen of the actual Central Park fight is cyclops firing at magneto.

- and the trains sequence is Storm shooting lighting, beast jumping over guy and magneto using the guns.

Personally, with the international trailer, I'm satisfied with what space rescue mission. I hope we don't get anymore of it in trailers, I want to wait till the film.

Congrats for admitting that’s what you’re doing right now. Complaining about anything and everything MCU (in a Dark Phoenix thread!) even if it doesn’t make a lick of sense.

You sure know how to read anything into everything.

Name 3 complaints that I’ve said about Dark Phoenix that don’t make any sense.

Maybe I can explain them to you.

What is everyone still arguing about? Seems like both sides of this never-ending debate are getting what they want. Dark Phoenix is coming out soon, the rights are official with Marvel and a reboot is imminent. Aren't we all satisfied?! Lol

It's entirely possible the X-Men won't reach their full potential in the MCU, either.

But they'll have colorful costumes and the right accents, and Storm will say things like "Winds hear me pose!" and all will be forgiven.
