86th Annual Academy Awards (2014) - Part 2

I actually watched the telecast in full this year, not too often that happens since it's such a long show, but I had time this year. :oldrazz: Heh, wasn't really surprised to see the Academy snub Scorcese and Leo again, it's almost like the Academy has something against both of them. I agree that Leo should branch out from all the Oscar-bait dramas though. Would be great to see him in a big blockbuster (especially while he's still young enough to play an action hero), even a CBM if he could be convinced for one.

I thought Ellen would be a great host but thought she was a let-down. I've seen her talkshow so I know how funny she can be, but she was just sort of flat at the Oscars. Probably would've added a lot if she'd had a co-host to play off of, as she's generally funnier when wisecracking about or with someone.

In any case, glad to see that McConaughey and Blanchett both won. I always figured that both of them would win an Oscar someday. Haven't seen either of their movies yet, definitely plan to when they're on Netflix.

Really not sure what was with all of the awards for Gravity. I mean, I was expecting the director win, and maybe the editing one too, but the cinematography, original score, sound editing, sound mixing, and visual effects? Totally didn't think it deserved those awards, could've gone to way better movies in each of those categories.

My favorite part of the show was definitely Amy Adams' sexy-dance in front of Pharrell. :hrt:

And Chiwetel Ejiofor seriously needs to be cast as Black Panther stat! Holy crap there can't be a more-perfect actor for the role than him. Even his voice would be awesome as-is. Make it happen Marvel!

You didn't think Gravity deserved a visual effects award?

Christian Bale's combover in American Hustle deserved best visual effects. No CGI needed there.

Well, at least we know that we'll be seeing three of the four Oscar winning actors soon.
Are you referring that because Jared Leto is probably taking another extended hiatus from making movies?

Granted, it had awesome visual effects, not saying it wasn't good. But Smaug in The Hobbit and the freefalling sequence in Iron Man 3 blew me away more.

I think it's not just visuals, but pushing the evalope. Not to say that The Hobbit didn't invent new technology, but Gravity really pushed for new software to get developed, to create something immersive.

Iron Man 3's CG was fine though despite that awesome scene, it's like we've seen stuff like that already despite the effort. That's why I wasn't wowed by the Hobbit. It's all familiar grounds. Smaug was fine but it's not like it's Gollum groundbreaking stuff there.

I'm not trying to negate anyone's work but I'm glad that Gravity won for best visual effects.

the guys who created the lightbox and camera rigs also deserve a lot of the credit.

Smaug looked awful in some places. The Hobbit's CGI was very unfinished.

Gravity's CGI looked so great that I couldn't tell it wasn't real. It was such great CGI that it didn't look like CGI.

Also, I'm just happy a movie that's original got props for their hardwork. If Hobbit or Iron Man 3, it's the same ole, same ole.

DOS' VFX unfinished? LOL, best one I heard in months.

For Gravity, it's stuff based in reality, not to say it's not astonishing, because it is, but it's "easier" to pull off. I have a problem with Gravity, saw it twice in the theater, really loved it, and then didn't think about it after, I think it's overrated because there's practically no substance, there are far more superior & interesting movies in 2013 than Gravity.

But the technical mastery & visual WOW factor took precedence over everything else.

I would say DOS had some unpolished effects, especially with the melted gold. I can't come up an excuse for that one. It was just bad.

The reason why Gravity is an interesting beast is because it's an original genre film with somewhat of a modest budget, that brought people in of all demographics to see the damn thing. And it was huge critical and $$$ hit. We should root for movies like these, not dismiss it. Even if you don't love it, movies like Gravity should be supported. It's all about the greater scheme.

It's a wake up call to Hollywood that oriental movies with lower budgets can be successful. You call it overrated; in reality it was an underdog.

Lupita because Jared Leto is still going to be doing his music. He has his fans due to his music.

Smaug himself was good, for the few scenes with just him and Bilbo together but it went downhill as soon as the dwarves joined the fight. I'm sorry but Jackson's films have awful, awful green screen lighting and compositing and the liquid gold looked like an animatic or something from 1999. No way the Hobbit deserved the Gold.

And notice it was only technical awards it won, and an award for the director who reigned it all in. It didn't win for screenplay or acting or picture.

That said, there's a lot more substance involved than you're giving it credit for.

You didn't notice? Bolg was a last-minute CGI replacement and it showed. The bit where Smaug is flailing around in the gold was very unfinished, also done at the last minute before release. When the curtain falls on Bilbo it looks very unfinished and video-gamey. Smaug looks amazing for many of his scenes but the rest of the problems with the CGI definitely mean this film didn't deserve an Oscar for it.

Its not a joke to say DOS' CGI was unfinished. Heck, it is basically admitted by production that they made a lot of last minute changes, such as the whole chase at the end of the film.

It was unfinished for AUJ too. Jackson said so on the commentary.
