^ When George Lucas and Steven Spielberg were writing Raiders of the Lost Ark, they basically argued that audiences will forgive things your characters did that we're only told about rather than shown. We forgive Black Widow because we've never seen what she's done. We've gotten to know the redeemed character instead.
That being said, I suspect their pasts are not dramatically different broadly speaking. But for a small change of circumstances, things would be very different for both of them.
Yeah, it's a copout unless it serves a very good plot purpose (I'm not going to say "never," but there's nothing about Koenig's scenes that would benefit rather than be cheapened by a LMD).

I really hope we don't get LMDs in the MCU. As many others have said many times, it introduces a whole "lol got ya, it was an LMD" element to every death
