All Things Superman: An Open Discussion - - - - - - - - - - - - Part 49

So apparently, MOS doesn't open in theaters until June 26 here, I'm a sad panda :(

I explained it. It is a part of battle wear, their armor. That is why they wear it into combat.

And that magically makes it fire/bullet/explosion proof?

I really don't see your point. You said the fact that it is armour is the reason that it is so damage proof. But even metal armour isn't explosion proof...

Personally, I don't need an explanation for why Superman's suit can withstand a lot of damage. I never have. It's another of the suspensions of disbelief i'm perfectly happy with.

But saying the reason is simply 'because it's armour' makes no sense, especially considering what material we are talking about...

Well, given how freshly born Kal-El looks when they put him in his ship, maybe she is wearing special maternity/hospital wear? Furthermore, just because something is a common form of dress does not mean it has to be universal. Also, how do we know that the piping is purely for attaching armour. If I recall correctly it seems that Jor-El's council robes attach the same way. It could be the Kryptonian equivalent of tucking your shirt into your pants/skirt.
If they are the "utilitarian jumpsuits of an advanced society" there is no such thing as popular dress. Though I agree about the birth being a possible factor.

And I am of the firm belief what Jor-El is wearing isn't simply council robes. Looks very armor based to me.

I'm just wondering how will they address the issue from people who've seen Clark's face pre-disguise, like people he's been with in Smallville. This is one huge hole untouched with Earth One and the Smallville TV series.

It's possible that Clark leaves for Alaska at a fairly "young" age, and then when Superman arrives on the world stage, no one has seen him in years. Including those from Smallville.

No, the reason why it is "explosion proof" is because it their armor, which is far more advance then our own. Whatever they made it out of is made to withstand such things as combat. Heck, Supes suit is taking the blast from the Kryptonian ship like a champ. I doubt what Lara wears would do the same.

Now if that is their "normal" clothing and they are a militaristic society, then it makes even more sense.

Well they know what Clark looks like during his college years no? Isn't that when the tornado scene happens, and he hasn't left for Alaska yet.

Also, he has been around and in the open enough for Lois to be able to identify him by name.

.

Possible I suppose, and i'd be fine with that. Guess we'll see in the film. :)

Everything looks good in the trailer but I wonder what the action scenes will be like as we only saw a very brief glimpse of it. It kinda worries me a bit though as it looks they're going with an almost documentary like camera style with shaky/vibrating camera and out of focus/focus shots and what little we saw of the action seems really fast. I hope that's just in the trailer and that the action is spectacular and easy to follow, I mean after all why have Snyder for his great visual/action style if he ends up doing something completely different.

The voice-over/editing in the trailer suggests that Jor-El is saying good-bye to his newborn son. But if you look carefully, it seems to be two different scenes - i.e., some time (days, weeks?) has passed between Kal-El’s birth and being placed in the ship.

I see what youre sayin. I hope its real clear too. That was one thing i loved about the avengers, you could tell what was going on and see the heroes fighting. But I'm not too worried. Even if it was shaky cam itd still be glorious superman action shaky cam. :p

It looks like the "shakey cam" portions are for dramatic "realistic-style" moments. I could clearly see Superman batting Zod in the air like a pinata. I actually do want some slow-mo stuff now and then.

I wouldn't worry too much. The action scenes looked like they were cut very quickly indeed for the purpose of having impact in the trailer. I'm sure things will look a lot clearer and more patient in the actual film.

My main concern would be the over-use of CGI. It only needs to be used when things can't be done practically or used to enhance a practical shot. That's why one of my favourite shots in the trailer is seeing a close-up of Cavill flying. The stress and intensity on his face makes you buy all the flying above the canyon that follows. I think we need shots like that throughout the flying sequences in order to ground things and bring a sense of believability to what we are seeing.

That was one of my biggest gripes with Superman Returns. Even the close-ups were almost all CGI. Not only did they look rubbish but they took me out of the action completely. Think back to Watchmen. Most of the action scenes in that film took place at night and with characters who were wearing masks. That made it a little easier to get away with CGI as you could hide things in darkness. Man Of Steel presents a different challenge as we've seen a lot stuff happens during the day. Having said that, I was blown away by a lot of the visuals in Watchmen so I have faith in Snyder. That for me, is one of his greatest challenges with this movie. Making the modern audience really believe a man can fly.

^ As far as I'm concerned, the flying sequences are better than the Iron Man movies, and those were GREAT.

Actually, I was looking through still from the trailer and just realized that. I still think I could be right regarding her clothing because if natural reproduction is a thing of the past on Krypton, maybe they aren't so well suited any more to a natural birth or there were just complications. Or as a new mother, Lara is not dressed for going out in public. It kinda looks like she is wearing a relaxed, informal garment like a housecoat or nightshirt, at least in comparison to what other Kryptonian garb we have seen.

Yeah, Snyder shows plenty in his action shots, if anything more people complain that he spends too much time on them lol. He's exactly what Superman needs visually and to be able to properly see how a modern Superman uses his powers in battle. Gonna be awesome.

lmao! :woot:

:hehe:

I seriously love that episode as well. I know most people think it was stupid, but I just think it's wicked fun :)
What is it? Buffy?

The 'underarmor' or whatever is not made of cotton. It's Kryptonian super durable material. It doesn't even need to be said.

The Krypton scenes are of interest to me. Yeah it could be the birth of Kal-El and him being sent away is two different scenes but I'm really starting to wonder how much time is going to be spent on Krypton. It seems like Snyder has a lot to get through there, which consequently means alot he has to avoid getting bogged down in. Krypton needs to be elegantly and economically done in terms of screentime. I think the less the better and keep it dense and detailed.

I would like them to properly address Jor-Els reasoning for Earth though, and why the life of his son is more important than completely disrupting another planets evolution. Yes, Jor-El might hope and dream his son is all he believes he can be but that's quite a risk, especially if the rocket were to land in North Korea and we got a Red Son situation or something. I think the story behind the Kryptonian pioneers may all tie into this explanation.

The whole young Clark without glasses is a problem though. But I've accepted it is something we'll have to overlook.

Just saw Oblivion, didn't get the MOS trailer but wasn't surprised as the film came out on the 10th here. Shame but the film was really good. I'm hoping I get to see it with Iron Man 3 in two weeks

Jor-El's armor is class. I like Zod's armor is class. Superman's is good, but far from classic. The piping in and of it self is striking in how un-Superman it is. And it all comes down to the same problem the New 52 has. They need something in the midsection area, but they don't want the classic look there. So we just start plopping stuff down there, and give it a reason for existing. Which is fine, but then it started to effect the other parts of the suit, like the side sections.

And I never get the complaints about the New 52 suit, while love for this one. I think both suits have flaws, and they aren't that different.
l like the piping .
Does it have any Greek Inspirations?
I get that feeling when I look at it .

College years and when he returns a man after disappearing into the world leave alot of room for a man to change is all I'm saying. If I disappeared into alaska during or just after college and returned half a decade later a man I would probably not be as recognizable as if I didn't do that. It's a start imo.

WB is definitely sitting on alot of shots. I suppose it's a sign of confidence that they aren't just throwing all their action at us to sell the product. There's a shot in the trailer during the kansas action after he's being shot by the military, he's taking off in a cloud of smoke and fire, that is just cut to ****....it's amazing that WB is choosing to do this but, more power to them.

Put this at the end of the next trailer(minus the spear) and they will win

love that gif:yay:

Personally I love the vibrating realness of the action shots in the trailer. It doesn't look overdone in any way. I don't get why so many these days hate on the handheld style just by default.

Shouldn't you be seeing it this week? It's out on the 25th over here.

About superman's suit. I've just always assumed that most things from krypton are pretty much indestructable because of their exposure to krypton's red sun and who knows what else because of kryptons giant size.
Saw a superman comic once where he had to make his CK glasses with glass fragments from his crashed ship because normal earth glass couldnt take the stress of his X-ray and heat vision.
I'm guessing it would be the same with clothing from there. I dont think he wears the suit because he needs protection, he wears it because it can take the punishment from what he does.

Who knows. Maybe snyder will play into the whole *aura* thing in this. anything within so many centimeters of supes body is protected. I would prefer that its explanied because the suit is from krypton tho. we shall see.

In STM, they avoided the issue by a) not having Clark return to Smallville and b) having the part played by two different actors. But in MOS, Clark/Supes does return; and with Cavill playing both roles, he looks uncannily like himself. :cwink:
