All Things Superman: An Open Discussion - Part 8

I'm in favor of anything that restricts Snyder. I'm not a fan of his. I'll see his Superman movie mostly because it's a Superman movie. Based on everything I've seen, I'm actually not all that excited about it.

And I don't know exactly what you mean by the wave of modern super hero movies. But if there's any character that should not fall into any "modern" pitfalls, it's the original superhero. He should feel as timeless as he is, and his movies should reflect that.

I'm not sure what you mean either :funny:

I'm just saying that Superman hasn't had a modern movie yet. He had 4 movies decades ago, and then a 'sequel' in recent times, which was very much kept in the old fashioned style and setting.

Your right, Superman SHOULD be timeless. And to do that, you have to put him in a movie that is in a modern setting, to show that he works in our world just as well as he worked in the world of the 70s.

If you thought there was even the smallest opportunity of making a movie of arguably the most recognizable fictional character ever, would you publicly say anything other than that you like him?

I don't doubt that he does like him. I'm just saying that taking those comments as proof that his movie will be good or faithful or whatever is a fallacy.

No one in any way suggested that Synder saying he's a fan of the character has any indication of how good or faithful the movie will be

I was just saying that his hesitations to do a Superman movie weren't because he hates the character and doesn't want to do a story involving him. He would love to do a Superman movie, he just didn't feel confident about it until he heard Nolan and Goyer's idea. And it didn't take much convincing :)

WB has shifted around the release dates for Seventh Son, which went from February 15, 2013 to October 18, 2013. Beautiful Creatures moved out of the February 1, 2013 spot to February 15th. I also noticed that Relativity moved their Hunter Killer out of the December 21, 2012 date (it hasn't received another release date yet).

Perhaps WB will give MOS that February 1st spot? If they move it there, they won't have any serious competition until A Good Day to Die Hard comes out two weeks after. And they won't encounter competition from the big summer tentpoles...

WB only managed to release 1 official picture in the entire time MOS was filming. I was honestly expecting at least a pic of Zod and Faora as well, during filming. And then they open the MOS FB site with the new logo and over a month later it's still empty. I don't think they will move the movie. I think they forgot they have a Superman movie coming out. :woot: Or maybe they want everyone else to forget that there's a Superman movie coming. :o

It is kinda slow. Look at what all was released while the new spider-man reboot was being filmed, and The Avengers, and TDKR, and..........I know its a year away, but c'mon now. A few official stills, or promo art isnt going to kill anyone.

If any film needed to be promoted to the moon and back, it's MOS.
I really hope they aren't depending on the name superman and the cast alone to sell this. That didnt work before and it won't work this time either. all mho.

promoting is now would be a waste of time if this film is over a year away lol

no, its never to early. especially when you're putting a film out there with a rumored budget of 175 mill+.

If it were your run of the mill film, then yes, i'd agree, but this film isn't. For good or bad Its got to overcome what many call a lackluster film in SR.

If i'm not mistaken, lots of stuff was released with the spider-man reboot over a year before, same with the avengers.

I'm kinda thinking they're waiting for TDKR to come and go, then they'll hit MOS hard with marketing. we'll see.

A couple of well-put-together official online pics AND / OR a poster wouldnt exactly be full-on promotion, so at least they could give us that. Wouldnt knock over their budget, but would maintain the hype at least.

But we'll get in a few months anyways, so...

Agreed

I don't think SUPERMAN RETURNS proves anything about Superman not being relevant. It only proves that fans wanted more action and a new take on Superman, not a rehash of Donner's. SUPERMAN RETURNS, which was an expensive movie, made about as much as BATMAN BEGINS, didn't it?

I think MAN OF STEEL's lack of "marketing" is potentially a case of WB not wanting to steal THE DARK KNIGHT RISES thunder, which, itself, has had a somewhat understated marketing campaign.

Yes it made a tad bit more than BB, but it also cost quite a bit more to make and market.

Exactly. Right now it's all about Avengers and Dark Knight Rises. As eager as we all are for them to really get releasing materials for MOS, it's just not likely to happen until close to or after DKR.

Surely they'll release something soonish. it feels like this thing has been in limbo forvever.

I never said they did, but a film's budget IS a factor when discussing the success of a film.

I thought the current discussion was about the character being relevant for audiences.

Snyder is gonna have to step it up after Avengers though. That was the gold standard regarding crazy city-wide action.

I would be surprised if they don't put a MOS teaser with The Dark Knight Rises.

Not really. Depends on what your angle is. Big wide diffuse destruction or intimate one-on-one action where you include the citizens and the city itself, which Avengers didnt do much. I never really felt much danger being the humans in the showdown. The city might as well have been empty.

mos also has the luxury of focusing on 1 main hero and his destiny and not like 8 lol

True, that makes it that more intimate as well. :yay:

Here's an interview with Lennix with some good quotes about MOS - http://www.blackfilm.com/read/2012/05/harry-lennix-talks-a-beautiful-soul-and-man-of-steel/

"And I know you can’t say much on “Man of Steel” but how exciting was it to get that role?

HL: Oh man! “Man of Steel” is going to be a very big deal when it comes out in Christmas of 2013. I was like a kid in a candy shop. Superman has always been my favorite superhero, it’s not even close. I guess a close second would be Spider-Man, but I’ve always been a fan of Superman since I was a little boy. As a teenager I saw the reboot with Christopher Reeve and I’ve watched that many, many times, and the second one with Christopher Reeve many, many times. To be a part of something this traditional and this foundational to the American myth is a great honor and I’m pleased to say I have a good role in it and I was honored to have been a part of the whole process."

A fan.
