BvS All Things Superman and Batman: An Open Discussion - - - - - - - Part 59

[/I]I do like the idea of a Lex speech beginning it though. He could emphasize how mankind is essentially alive only as long as we remain in superman's good graces. Do we want to live as an alien dictates we should?

Reporter: "But the superman is out there every day saving citizens, telling bad people that they cannot hurt us any more! He is there to stand up for us and tell them no!"

Luthor: "And who is he to tell us anything? Are we to live under an alien's idea of right and wrong? Can we not find our own way to the light?"

Public Enemies :awesome:
I love that movie

And Arkham Origins batsuit?
You just made this little geek happy

I have an affection for villains just being plopped into a narrative as is as well. Something about it works so well for a sequel. I guess it's because it leaves for time for the villainy of the villain to be developed, rather than spending time on the precursor to his villainy.

I think it would be great if batman and Luthor were just plopped into BvS in this fashion. We'd begin the movie catching up with Clark and what he's been doing post-MOS (changing the world for the better and such). Then along comes a bat and a business man to mess things up. I would have the movie start with superman being naive and trusting, but he'd end up being a wiser, greater form of himself.

In response to villain origins: I like it both ways. On the one hand, the tone of say a Raimi Spider-man film warrants a villain origin to play as a contrast to the hero's origin. I like that approach within the tone of that type of film. On the other hand, a film like TDK (TDKR to a lesser extent since we had a brief exposition on Bane's origins - oh, and Alfred's Wiki-briefing to Bruce :P) does well with a presently existing villain. I just enjoy both approaches very much when they are done well within the tone of the respective film.

To your point about how Lex and Bats are handled in BvS: This without a doubt is my ideal approach to the film. Especially the beginning as we reintroduce (and in many ways introduce) Clark to the audience and what he has been doing since he revealed himself to the world. SO MUCH POTENTIAL. Just hope they captialize.

Oh, you're not alone on that. I prefer SM-3 over both TASM and TASM2... what the writers did with the latter, oh my God, it was terrible. Even the terrific final 15 minutes can't redeem that movie.

Spidey fans who hate SM-3 but willing to give Webb a pass for TASM2... I just... I can't...

Spider-Man 3 had some really good moments (Aunt May talking to Peter about the character of Spider-Man, Harry using MJ as a tool against Parker, and the moment in which he sheds the suit, etc.). TASM2 ,at best, had entertaining moments.

On CBR we had lots of ideas for the opening of BvS but my favorite is still Lex giving stump speeches (we want President Lex! Though with Jesse's age maybe Mayor Luthor works better) to the people of Metropolis talking about the dangers of this new era and the menace the "Alien" truly is. (Lois and Clark often seen covering such speeches) this is juxtaposed with shots of good deeds (big and small) Superman is doing. The public is divided but Superman still uses his powers for good and does not waver.

The nice thing about this is it acts as a bridge between movies and sets up the new status quo in minutes. You can get a brief background of Lex in speeches and news clips and see how Superman has adapted to this new stage is his life. Also it allows you to show how Metropolis has moved on from Zod's attack...

Also it will make for part of an epic trailer where you see some of that, and then you slowly pan back and the scene is Batfleck watching on a computer in his Bat-Cave :)

I wouldn't be surprised if they opened with a Luthor speech about the way of the world and how it's changing and how that's a bad thing. Perhaps in a high rise in front of a window like in all those books. Only for him to turn and around and reveal whom he's talking to...

I personally hope that they introduce as many characters as possible out of costume. If they must open on action(as most cbm sequels do), then something clever and inverted like TDK with it's joker intro. I have a feeling it will be superman saving folks though.

Would people rather see batman in all his glory first only to remove the mask in the cave, or would it be stronger to have him armor up after you get to know Wayne and all his machinations...knowing snyder the choice seems obvious.

I very much like the idea of opening the movie with Luthor giving a speech about the virtues of humanity and the dangers of an overaggressive "alien" living in our midst. Of course, you can count on Luthor to use the destruction of Metropolis as leverage to turn the people against SM.

I am kind of torn as to how I want Luthor to be portrayed in the DCCU. I definitely don't want the Gene Hackman, crazy, hair brained, real estate scam of the week Luthor. But do they go with the political businessman who is nice in public but ruthless behind the scenes with his hate for SM? Or do they go with a somewhat sympathetic Luthor whose reasoning for his SM hate is that he genuinely believes that humanity should find it's own way (with him leading, of course) and not need any help from aliens?

The difference would be subtle which means that it would all come down to the writing and then the acting by Eisenberg.

I'll have to find my "Luthor stump speech" and post it here.

Found it:

A typical Luthor "stump" speech on the campaign trail:

"First off, I would like to thank everyone for coming and for your support.

Ladies and gentlemen, it is no secret that after the alien invasion a few years ago, that I devoted my life, and a considerable portion of my wealth, to the rebuilding effort in Metropolis. The destruction that fell upon my fair city left me and my fellow citizens a broken people. We were downhearted and devastated. What would we do? Who would we turn to?

Well, today, I am here to tell you that the person we turned to was me! While the alien the papers have dubbed "Superman" has helped some in the rebuilding effort, let us not forget the reason for the devastation in the first place! This so-called "Superman" is one of them, the very aliens that attacked us! How do we know that there aren't more of them out there and this alien flying among us is just the vanguard?

He calls himself our "protector" but what is it we really need protection from? Another alien invasion, perhaps? I say we need protection from him! We humans need to stick together! We need protection from all invaders: Foreign, domestic, and alien!

Friends, as proven by the events of a few years ago, our security is hopelessly broken. However, just like Metropolis is rising from the ashes, our planetary defenses, with my help, can be repaired and made strong! I can only do so much as a private citizen, which is why I am asking for your vote in this upcoming election! If you send me to Washington, I promise to fix the broken system that allowed our planet to become so weak! Just like I fixed Metropolis! What do you say?! Are you with me or the alien?!"

I like this Superman costume from the Just Imagine series

What do you guys think of it? Should someone use its design in a short shot in future animation?

Actually I would have loved to have seen the Just Imagine series continued in some way. It was really good and laid down some interesting concepts.

It's always nice to see someone else enjoyed this series
The only entry I did not read is the Wonder Woman issue

I wanted to say this in the Emily Blunt thread but it's closed...

I think the Emily Blunt casting rumour is totally false. I think Warner Bros. put out the rumour to promote their new release 'Edge of Tomorrow'. They pulled the same schtick with Joaquin Phoenix during his Oscar campaign for 'Her' – another film distributed by Warner Brothers. If Blunt was cast in any role of significance they would have announced the character she’ll be playing.

Another Universe I would have loved to see go on as well was the Amalgam world. I loved Super-Soldier and wouldn't have minded picking it up as an on going. But the Just Imagine series still was good the only thing I would have changed was Batman's outfit. The history I would have kept but just changed his outfit. I did however love the look for Aquaman and Green Lantern. Wonder Woman's origin book was good.

WB didn't put this out...it's just click bait

Ah that still gives me goosebumps to read! Intersplice in some scenes of Supes saving people and some commentators talking pro/con on the alien and you have an epic opening!

I also dont think Batman should be shown until AT LEAST the 35 minute mark. I know that wont happen but god it would be awesome. Tease him, discuss him, maybe show blurry pics or clips of Bruce Wayne, some random Bat style symbols and paraphanelia (like perhaps a batarang on Clark's desk at The Planet or flowers from Bruce Wayne to Ma Kent or Lois) to remind the audience but beyond that NOTHING! Build and build and build...we can all pretend otherwise but he is who the average joe wants to see so make them wait so that when Batfleck finally does walk on stage they gasp!

By the way, where did you get that awesome campaign poster? Did you find it on the net or did you make it yourself?

Awesome! If WB doesn't go with something along these lines they will be really missing the boat.

I believe we both agreed that a TDK style viral campaign could get people going on a level not seen since...well The Dark Knight! With all this lead time they should be paying a bunch of geeks to come up with the coolest games and features, not unlike when they released the Zod teaser for MOS only bigger and with more Batfleck! :wow:44
