The island parts usually always seem better. I'm not sure why, but it feels completely different than the modern day scenes, like the actors, and writing are the best when it's focused on the island time. This last weeks episode was the best in part because it was mostly all set on the island.
Clearly the directors and writing staff could make a damn good action-thriller show if they wanted to, but it also seems like WB/CW shows have to come with a "pretty white people with problems" subplot all the time. The fact that so many of the episodes have turned away from the action-thriller aspects to peak in on Laurel and Tommy on a date that has nothing to do with anything going on in the story other than these 2 people have socialized with Ollie at one point or another totally lags the show down.
