Arrow's Second Season to Feature Two Villains

Arrow's second season will be stepping up the action by featuring not just one overarching villain, but two!

Although the first season featured several smaller villains — The Count (Seth Gabel) and Edward Fyers (Sebastian Dunn), among them — Arrow's season-long big bad was Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman), who apparently died at the hands of Oliver (Stephen Amell) in the season finale.

Arrow Postmortem: Is Oliver done being the vigilante in Season 2?

"We made no secret of the fact that we subscribe to the Whedonesque model of having a big bad, and in Season 2, we'll actually have two big bads," executive producer Marc Guggenheim tells TVGuide.com. "They'll both be very recognizable names to fans of the comic book. We're really excited about both of them."

Interestingly enough, Malcolm Merlyn has inspired the direction of the second season. "With Malcolm and the Dark Archer, we sort of had two big bads in one person," he says. "In Season 2, we're going to split them up essentially, and there will be a Malcolm-esque big bad and a Dark Archer-esque big bad."

Naturally, fans of the Green Arrow comics may guess that Deathstroke will be the Dark Archer-esque villain of Season 2, with Slade Wilson (Manu Bennett) destined to put on that infamous mask. Running the theory past Guggenheim, he responds, "If the question of Season 1 is, 'What happened to Oliver on that island?' The question of Season 2 is, 'What happened to Slade Wilson on that island?'"

Did Arrow heed our advice on how to make a superhero series work?

Regardless of who the two villains are, Guggenheim vows that the second season will be even more action-packed and exciting than the first. "We're definitely trying to take the show to the next level in Season 2," he says. "Obviously we're feeling a lot of pressure, but also a huge desire to return with a few big bold statements that the show is not quieting down. If anything, it's ramping up. It's going to be cool. I'm really excited about both villains. We've set the bar pretty high for ourselves in terms of ending with a bang, and we're looking to exceed that in Season 2.

I started watching this during the latter part of the season, so didn't see the earlier stuff concerning the island;

How long has Oliver been on the island at the point we see him with Slade..?

I think when he first met Slade, he was already on the island for 6 months. Don't know how much time passed when the season ended. But I don't think he's been there for a whole year yet.

I’m honestly wondering on what’s going to be the catalyst that turns Slade into the “Deathstroke” that we all know since if Fryers and the pressures that came with surviving on the island against his private army didn’t break his “moral code”, what would/will?

i disagree i have seen katie cassidy in other stuff and she is quite fun and charasmatic laurel is such a boring character it is like taking all the personality away from lois and thats laurel

i really liked her in supernatural where she was able to have more fun

When you say "more fun", you really mean she's able to let loose and be more of a *****y character with more kick to her than just a wet blanket. But she's still not exactly fun in the same sense of Felicity who is actually humorous and enjoyable to watch and what one would describe as fun.

I think Katie Cassidy is probably just a more serious person in general and that comes across in whatever she's playing. I don't think she's naturally funny like Emily Bett Rickards seems to be, so Cassidy relies on lines being written for her to seem even more humorous than she is, whereas Rickards takes the few lines she's been given and still makes them fun just by inhabiting them with her personality (which is what she did at the start).

They both fall in love with Shado, but she picks Oliver. :o

I believe it's related to Shado.

They set it up in "The Odyssey". Slade doesn't forgive betrayal. He'll feel Oliver betrayed him somehow.

Also, Colton Haynes made another reference to Hal Jordan recently. I honestly think they're bringing him in, just not as Green Lantern.

I'm hoping that the overarching villain in Starling City is The Calculator. He'd be a different villain, gives us an intelligent threat that Oliver wouldn't be able to fight hand-to-hand and would have to outsmart instead and, especially if you combine him with Sherman Fine, you could have him supply various minor villains throughout the season with equipment.

And, on the island, I hope that it's the woman in the heels that we saw.

And I hope that the catalyst for Oliver and Slade's separation will be the season finale and then we see him in Starling City once we see that they become enemies. Then Season 3 could focus on their feud on the island and Deathstroke in Starling City.

Before he becomes the Calculator, he should go round as an earlier version known as the Counting Frame. :hehe:

I'm hoping this means that, at least by the end of the season, Roy becomes Arsenal and maybe, just maybe, Thea becomes Speedy.

The way it reads to me both big bads will be in the present setting. I'm guessing the nice pair of legs in heels will be the corporate Malcolm type villain.

I'm more intrigued with who the Dark Archer type villain will be. They seem to be trying to steer the idea away from it being Deathstroke, saying the story on the island for season 2 is how does Slade become Deathstroke.

They said both villains would be familiar to fans, but I'm not familiar enough with GA comics to know what other physical badass could take up the Dark Archer style foe for Ollie.

Excellent! Speedy and Arsenal team up in the Glades and then become part of Team Ollie!

Arrow has become the CW"s bread and butter like Smallville has before it.

I'm excited with the idea of being 2 villains for the second season as they'll amp up the ante.

It looks like the island flashbacks will focus on Slade more so than Oliver.

I hope there is a team formation with Oliver, Roy, Thea, Diggle, Felicity, and maybe Helena. We could also see Arrow's version of Justice League apart from Smallville's version.

I hope they can redeem her. Because right now, I want Ollie to put an Arrow in her face.

We never really got a time frame, but the main events went something like

- Washed up on island and attacked/rescued by Yao Fei immediately
- Some time spent learning that you need to kill to survive
- Captured by Fyers, tortured by Wintergreen, saved by Yao Fei
- Basic defence training and more survival teachings
- Captured by Fyers while trying to rescue Yao Fei
- Saved by Yao Fei again and given a map to where Slade was
- Meeting Slade

We're meant to think he spent reasonable time learning from Yao Fei, Slade and Shado but in terms of episode time it went by very quickly with Oliver showing improvement the next time he was in an island scene/episode. The writers indicated one season = one year on the island. I'd guesstimate it at 4-6 months before he met Slade.

The comments seem to suggest both big bads they are talking about are in the present day Starling city.

It makes sense given that Oliver has a team and it's probably getting bigger. Malcolm was a match for Oliver + Digg but he was pretty unique in that sense. This way they can have Ollie vs one of them, and like Thea + Roy vs the other.

As for the island, maybe there is no enemy. Maybe it will just be the fall out with Slade. I do hope he one day comes to Starling city and that arrow through the mask in the pilot doesn't mean he dies on the island, because I'd find it hard to believe island Ollie could beat Slade. We don't even know Slade will be the one that goes bad either, they showed with Tommy they like to twist things up. He could end up fighting Shado instead.

I have faith they'll do it well whatever. I just wish it would start already! The actors are happy, the writers are happy, why oh why do we need season breaks at all!!!!! :csad:

Hopefully the mask with the arrow in the eye just signifies that Slade is now properly one-eyed.

Don't count on it, Metropolis has been mentioned a few times (definitely once at least), but no Superman has popped up. The nods are just to establish that there is a wider DCU.

Superman is a completely different character to those in the arkham games in that his powers are a huge challenge to translate and would take a huge amount of work and probably money to get right. Which would really defeat the purpose of the DLC if they had to invest more money than they would get.

Green arrow is a street level character that could fit in easily as DLC if they wanted too. Not saying its going to happen, but he has a much better chance than superman appearing or any other hero with powers that would require different game mechanics completely.

Thanks. I'm going to get the dvd when it comes out.

Unless it will be deathstroke and the Island story will be sheding light on what made him turn into the villain he is. Which would kind of make sense. Maybe they have the corporate villain who is the female character hire Slade for some reason or another.

As for GA villains. I'm not that familiar with them either. But I could see Brick being involved in terms of taking over the Glades after its destruction. Some of the villains I see more as one offs or a two parter.

In a way I think the current comic is doing a grear job of setting up the "Big Bads" for future seasons of the show.

There was also some corporate-esque mastermind behind Fyers wasn't there?

I'm just hoping for some more masked villains. The final showdown with Ollie & Malcolm was pure old school superhero goodness.:awesome:

Awesome. Don't worry that was pretty spoiler free. The key plot points but theres lots of twists and turns on the island story :)

I think in the first half of the season the island > present day. But anything involving Deadshot, Count or Merlyn > Island in my opinion. Present day started to overtake it towards the end.

I think that was the female villain. I thought he spoke to a man on a phone at one point (a muffled phone voice like Ollie's translator), but penultimate episode he was talking to his boss, and it was the girl with the stilleto heels.

Since the island flashbacks will be about Slade becoming Deathstroke in Season 2, I hope all that will pay off when they bring he and Shado into the present day.
