Does anybody happen to know how big of an install the “high resolution texture” optional install is? Just curious if I needed to free up some space. Figures this and a multitude of DLC is on the horizon that I want and I'm stuck with the 4 GB model and MS will only let me partition 20 GB of my 500 GB external hard drive just because I don't feel like spending the $100 or so for the 120 GB Xbox 360 HD. :o

On a bright side, still looking forward to BF3.

I'm assuming it'll be a few gigs. If ya want a cheaper HDD, try eBay. I was able to get a 250 gig hdd for around 80 bux

A little more info on the texture pack:
A few weeks ago, a report began circulating that the Xbox 360 version of Battlefield 3 would ship with a high resolution texture pack to increase its graphical fidelity. Now GamerZines has uncovered additional info on the feature, which turns out not to be as intriguing as it sounds. According to executive producer Patrick Bach, the texture pack isn't "magic" and is "the same thing we do for PC and PS3, so there's nothing extra."

Specifically, the pack installs to the Xbox 360, allowing Battlefield 3 to stream higher resolution textures from the hard drive. The practice is common on PC and PS3, which come standard with hard drives. On the Xbox version, however, DICE had to make the texture streaming optional, as not all Xbox consoles are guaranteed to have a hard drive. "No one has really tried to do it properly," said Bachman, "so us doing it will create question marks."

Without the texture-pack installed, noted Bachman, users are basically getting the "standard-def" version of the game, whereas the texture pack will enable "a more detailed, varied and vivid experience."

I install all my games anyway, but I'll deff be making sure to install that

I've always been iffy about using eBay but I did find one for only $45.99. I should just bite and purchase it tomorrow, a lot of games on the horizon with plenty of DLC.

Very excited for BF3, I double checked my schedule and I'm off Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday...and I didn't even request those days off! :awesome:

You shouldn't be worried. eBay takes care of ya. I recently ordered something from the site and it never came in. All it took was ONE email to eBay and i got a FULL refund on what i ordered. They also informed me if the package ever did arrive, to just keep it.

Just pay attention to the seller ratings and their feedback.

This is interesting.

A few days ago, Justin Calvert, an editor at GameSpot posted a blog lamenting the fact that EA is sending out copies of Battlefield 3 for review right around the time the game is scheduled to come out (rather than a few weeks ahead of time, which is the norm) and that copies of the console version aren't being sent out at all.

Fast forward to today, and there's a thread on Giant Bomb about this blog. One guy, for some reason, expresses his distaste for review embargos. Later, Jeff Gerstmann (the site's founder, and probable reviewer of Battlefield 3) comes into the thread and responds with this:

Jeff "8.8" Gerstmann said:
Wow, so you're worried about every single game that gets sent out for review ahead of its release date? That must be exhausting.

You should instead focus your worries onto games that don't get sent out for review ahead of their release date. Sort of like bad movies not getting screened for critics, we're seeing more and more cases of bad games (or at least games that publishers aren't confident about) being "mysteriously lost in the mail" and other stuff like that.

Not that BF3 falls into that camp. They're being pretty upfront about it not showing up in a timely manner, which is oddly refreshing yet deeply troubling for a release of this magnitude. Games that release on this sort of scale are usually done well in advance. Instead everyone's talking about rumored certification failures and (also rumored) massive launch day patches. Someone, someday could probably write a fairly interesting book about the development of Battlefield 3. There are still one or two more twists left in the story, though.

I'm not saying that Battlefield 3 isn't going to be very good or that the sky is falling. I'm not saying anyone should read more into this than should be, but it just caught my eye.

I just wanted to see a quick shot of a worm soldier or awkward running soldier from the Beta cut into the trailer.

I'm not saying it'll be bad or it'll be great, but holy crap how much of a disappointment will it be if it turns out to be bad? :o

Rage was basically "60fps" and "we use to make awsome games". From what I have played from the beta excluding bugs, it was awsome. Just a poor map of chioce. SP, eh. It looks pretty at least and it has the fat bald man from 24, thats something I suppose.

SP is not the main attraction anyway. Fill it with uninteresting forgettable characters/storylines and have cutscenes/set pieces galore, but it's still all about the MP.

I won't touch the single player until after iv played a lot of mp. I never even got around to beating the SP in BC2 until a few months after it came out. As soon as i boot up the game Tuesday I'm jumping into the mp and trying out that Caspian Border.

Our Battlefield 3 review: Why we're splitting it up, and why console's coming late
We're just a few short days away from the launch of EA and DICE's biggest game of the year -- however, with reports of platform variations, limited server availability and day-one patches, we've seen no small amount of uncertainty about how we'll be handling our review of Battlefield 3. It's going to be unprecedented territory for us (the existence of this very post should be evidence enough of that), so we thought we'd be as up-front and transparent as humanly possible before said reviews go live.

Yes, reviews. We have received from EA the PC version of the game and, after hearing reports about the differences between the PC and console SKUs -- as well as news of a day-one patch for console versions of the title -- we've decided to review the two individually.

Our review of the PC version -- which, despite reports of day-one NVIDIA and ATI driver updates, our reviewer has running in single-player at maximum graphical settings at 60 fps -- will go live next Monday morning at 3 a.m. ET. We'll be playing on private multiplayer servers which EA has set up for early reviewers, giving us ample time to play through the title's campaign and online multiplayer offerings before this embargo.

Our plans for the console version of the game are a little less iron-clad -- we anticipate we'll receive the game on Monday, though it won't be in any reviewable state until we get our hands on its "day-one" patch. We're unsure whether this update will go live on Monday or Tuesday, but we won't be able to really dig in until it's been obtained, which will push our review back to the middle of next week -- again, without a firm date for the update, we can't determine a firm date for the review.

To my knowledge, we've never split up different SKUs of a game like this -- we certainly haven't during my time as Reviews Editor -- but in a case like this, the decision is somewhat out of our hands. The two reviews may end up being completely identical, as the two versions of the game may end up being completely identical. They may be different. They may have different star ratings, if those differences merit a re-evaluation of our bottom line. It's uncharted territory, and we hope we'll have your patience as we explore it.

We would never run a review for a version of a game that wasn't representative of the version that you, our beloved readers and video game consumers, would be spending your hard-earned money on. Similarly, we wouldn't run a review for a game that we hadn't spent enough time with to see everything it has to offer its purchasers and players. This plan, while unorthodox, is the only way to ensure we fulfill both of these two requirements while still delivering our review in a timely manner.

I'm probably going to treat the SP more as a tech demo.
The facial animations are very impressive I think. Probably the most realistic i'v seen. You can see the skin stretch and bulge as the muscles operate underneith. I'm kinda scratching my head wondering why they didn't try to pimp it as part of the sales pitch. It's only now we get a very brief glimps of it.

I wouldn't want someone who is CoD crazy reviewing BF3 either. Most of the people who dont like BF can be seen playing cod. That is not a coincidence.

Battlefield fanboy/fangirls will instantly slam CoD for being uninspired & the same as the previous games.

CoD fanboy/fangirls will instantly slam Battlefield for having too big maps, medics & basically anything that isn't the same as CoD's games.

The only 2 websites I will be listening to for reviews on either will be Gamespot & IGN.

So much uncertainty surrounding the console versions of this, the 360 especially. EA/DICE have done a pretty bad job instilling confidence. And the fact the console reviews won't hit until probably wed-thurs sucks, especially when extra free-preorder multiplayer maps are on the line.

I just want it to look good, play good, and run well on my 360, that is all.

I thought Bad Company 2 looked pretty good, ran very well and played very well on the 360. So i expect the same thing here.
