Based on the above, my guess is that Elena and Katherine are going to pull a Freaky Friday; thereby returning the show to the original status quo of "Human Elena" and "Vampire Katherine".

I think it makes sense. Right now, Elena has everything Katherine wants - immortality, vampire powers, etc. So, she magically (as everything else in this show) switches bodies with Elena before making a runner and vanishing without a trace. Cue several episodes where the Salvatore brothers try to track her down while Bonnie works to find a way and stop Elena from dying.

Disagree with that assessment. Two things:

1. Katherine ALWAYS fines a way to survive. That's her one trait, is it not?

2. From a story-writing perspective, why would Elena need to eventually regain her body (assuming she gets body-swapped with Katherine)? Aren't the two of them virtually physically identical to one another? The only long-term repercussion of such an event would be that Elena gets de-vamped.

"The Vampire Diaries" is getting a new character - and he may not be to Phil Robertson's liking.

The CW series is adding a gay character to the cast later this season, according to E! Online. The "new hottie" (name: Luke), described as "handsome and sarcastic," will be enrolling at Whitmore College alongside his sister, whom "he will do (or sacrifice) anything to protect." There's been no word yet as to who will be playing the character, or in which episode he'll be making his first appearance, but all will be revealed soon enough when Season 5 returns January 23.
