“As far as I’m aware, even if that was the case, it couldn’t work out because I’m doing a little play called ‘Hamlet’ in London,” Benedict Cumberbatch told MTV of rumors that he's on Marvel's wishlist to play Doctor Strange. “So I don’t think I could even if that was in the cards. It sounds like a fantastic project. It’s a shame if I miss out, but who knows?” Were there ever any talks?
“I couldn’t possibly comment,” he replied. While Cumberbatch is making his San Diego Comic-Con debut for DreamWorks' Penguins of Madagascar and The Hobbit, it's believed Marvel will announce the English actor as Dr. Stephen Strange during its Hall H panel Saturday. What do you think?

If he wouldn't sign for DC , with all the money they would surely be throwing at him, why would he sign with Marvel, who always signs their actors to 6-9 film contracts?

Interesting, he was rumored to be eyeballed for Bruce Banner in the days leading up to 2011's SDCC as well. I could certainly see it, but don't know how likable I could really find him in the role. Good actor overall though. Seems like a bit of a wildcard personality for Marvel to wrangle, however - and he doesn't seem interested in these movies for the most part.

I'd be ecstatic if we got Phoenix but I don't think he's the kind to do CBMs with extensive contracts. He could easily carry a franchise like RDJ did, especially since Feige said that they're trying to make Strange the new Iron Man, but if turned down Lex...would he really be Strange?

The downside is...... we may have to wait until 2017 to see Strange, rather than 2016.

The Wrap is pretty reliable and it definitely seems to be leaning toward Phoenix at the moment, but I'm still rooting for Cumby as well; 'specially given his tricksy comments.

Phoenix definatley gives me more a Mordo vibe than anything else. I still hope for Cumberbatch.

I'd rather get Cumberbatch for someone like Namor, if Marvel ever gets around to making the film that is. His slender physique would be perfect for Namor. Phoenix has that dark, edgy look that would be perfect for Strange. I just hope he doesn't pull a Norton and leave after one film.
