Age of Ultron Early Avengers 2 Box Office Prediction Thread - Part 2

Furious 7 has slowed to a crawl. It's going to be a photo finish with Avengers.

*sigh* I think that happened with Avengers and Avatar. Avatar re-released in theaters while Avengers didn't, which I hope it would. Why am I saying this now? I'm hoping history doesn't repeat itself and FF7 doesn't BARELY beat A:AoU but a grand. I'm hoping that this movie makes $450M DOM and $1.5B WW but not sure right now. I truly wish they'd re-release the directors cut in theaters to try and make some extra money. Cameron has to be humbled :csad:

What if Disney decides to release a extended cut in theaters. That would be amazing!!

Hmmm, that has me wondering. Every time Marvel does a "marathon" in theaters before a new movie comes out, do the profits from that count towards the new film, or does it get split among all the films in the marathon and added to their box office totals?

I know it is not much additional $ at all, but I'm just curious about how that's tabulated.

Avatar's rerelease only made 9 million more, doesn't make much of a difference, and a rerelease of Avengers wouldn't have worked as well as you might think.

Would've probably been more of a loss than a gain financially, anyway. They made $1.5 billion (not mentioning whatever was made from merchandise & the like). Why be greedy when you already have the win under your belt?

I prefer the heroes being done right to the villains as they could be hanging around for a long time over multiple films but the villains need to get better. Strange how they have been so poor on average.

Well boxofficemojo thinks AoU will make it to 1,5 bil WW.

We also can't forget Avengers: Age of Ultron. The Marvel/Disney film crossed $200M in China. It's also expected to cross the $400M mark here domestically and is the only film to do that so far this year. Internationally the film will cross the $800M threshhold for a $1.2B worldwide take. It still has to keep going to eclipse Furious 7's $1.5B worldwide gross, which is seems likely to do.

Well according to the boxoffice.com forums, who keep track of the numbers, 1.5b is a stretch at this point. Around or under 1.4b seems to be the more likely finish. China will have 3 new openings today severely cutting into AOU's legs there.

Good point. I think a cut of the marathon ticket price goes to the studio - like any normal ticket to the new Marvel release itself - and then the rest of it just goes to the theatre, since these marathon events are 100% handled by them and have nothing to do with the studio.

Although im pretty sure it wont make it to 1,5 bil i think it will definately be over 1,4 bil. Something like 1,43-1,47 bil

P.S. Dont forget Japan doesnt open until June/July/whatever and can easily add 25-75 mil

in Japan
Furious 7 did 23,3 mil
T4 AoE did 27,4
Iron Man 3 did 25,2
TASM2 did 30,3
Avengers did 45,3

I believe it could go either way. Most likely, though, F7 doesn't pass the first Avengers & AoU ends up right behind F7. And I'm just fine with all of that.

IW Part I and II will be the REAL record breakers. And I'm talking numbers that won't be easily surpassed any time soon. Those are the real contenders for going ahead of TA's domestic gross, imo.

I always wonder why Marvel's villains aren't as compelling as we wish. Personally, I do think the villains in the comic books are about as equal as DC's, even though they don't have a Joker who is the most iconic villain in the entire DC rogue gallery. However, I think the lack of Dr. Doom and Magneto, as well as other villains from F4 and X-Men, definitely hurt the MCU rogue gallery. I doubt Feige ever mandated the writers to make sure the villains are as strong or as interesting as the heroes themselves, so it really come down to the writers' treatment of the villains in the Marvel movies. If they would just stop killing the villains in every movie, though, it would definitely help resolving this issue.

I've always felt the MCU shifted he focus away from the villains, and considers them obstacles for the heroes. There were notes from Louis Esposita or Kevin Feige on the Amazing Spider-Man 2 script that say "Why can't there just be evil in the world, and Spider-Man is our last line of defense?"

That's sort of how Marvel Studios views villains. Where as the Batman franchise has often been criticized for downplaying the titular character to highlight the villain, Marvel has always gone the other route from day 1. Robert Downey Jr's Tony Stark was the most compelling Superhero protagonist ever, and Jeff Bridges Obadiah Stane was just...there.

Numbers were updated

Domestic: $411,369,385 32.2%
+ Foreign: $866,600,000 67.8%
= Worldwide: $1,277,969,385

Furious 7 still at 1499,7 bil WW.

It will be close. It would be pretty funny if AoU gets really close like 25-50 millions behind FF7 and it will all depend on Japan when AoU opens there in June/July to know which one wins :)

I'm still surprised AoU did as good as it did the first weekend Domestically

You're a hater!..............is what people say when they have no come back! *sigh* fine!! But it would have gave something to the box office of Avengers. If you look back at my posts, you will see that I said that no way this movie makes no more than the original but I got blasted by people here. Go back and look it up! I am also on record saying that Infinity Wars will DEFINITELY make more than the original Avengers and Avatar! There! I said it. Quote me on it!

The numbers on boxoffice.com are a mess today so I don't know if I'd go by those. The Global article they just put out contradicts itself everywhere and I had a headache trying to make sense of it. I'm going back to using Box Office Mojo as my go-to source, even if they take a lot longer. BoxOffice.com is basically great for quick daily twitter updates.

Screen Daily posts up-to-date international numbers. They are a reliable source just as official as BOM. That was BO.com's source.

BOM just takes a little longer to update os numbers.
It's not surprising, after the week end numbers to see that F7 has already crossed the 1.5B mark.

Now I think it's just a tiny bit annoying to see F7 numbers constantly reported on a AOU BO thread even when they don't serve as a benchmark or aren't used as a comparison of any kind.

35-40 mil left in OS
40 from Japan (hopefully maybe 50-55)

That looks like FF7 is tied with the Avengers from that chart. Are the numbers exactly the same?
