HEROES has another exciting episode, although it also sort of still maintains a slight status quo and with so many characters at once I wonder if everything will even out properly. I also fear a season finale that may be too eager to "string us along" that it leaves us hanging for weeks. A finale still needs to have some sense of closure and resolution.
We had a sort of climatic showdown as Peter manages to make it to Claire's homecoming despite the efforts of his brother Nathan to "save the cheerleader, save the world". Peter's now reminding a little of Hiro in that now that he seems to have gotten a hint of what his power is and the world around him, he does genuinely want to be altruistic, much to the chagrin of his brother, who ignores his powers and focuses on politics. The interesting thing about this is that Peter's whole quest is on preventing the horrible images foretold in Isaac's paintings (his hint from "Future Hiro" just cemented it), and yet despite his efforts, while he did save Claire, those images all happened. Sylar indeed kills a cheerleader, and at 8:12 p.m. Peter found himself in a pool of blood under the banner. Just Sylar ended up killing Claire's loudmouthed, witchy rival, and Peter managed to "absorb" Claire's regeneration (an outcome I thought about since the commercials aired). Still, it was naturally exciting seeing Peter square off with Sylar, especially when he pulled a "Darth Vader" in the hallway. The final plunge off the bleachers was a little awkward but otherwise fine.
Mohinder meets a sage-like dream-kid, which I guess is a little bit of a cliche in itself, especially as he says typical "sage" things like going, "You already have the answer" and all that. And naturally, Mohinder has to choose to go back. Not saying it wasn't done well, it just was a little predictable.
There's some chasing with D.L., "Jessica" and the brat, but Nikki's storyline I was probably the least interested in.
It was good to see Ando showing some genuine respect for Hiro, albeit when he's not around (when he usually second guesses him), and as the waitress was still dead in the present, Hiro apparently didn't succeed in saving her. He did go back in time 6 months but "dropped out of her life weeks before" her death. It seems unlike Hiro to have simply abandoned her if he happened to "get lucky" with her, so I wonder if something else prevented it; like making his Future Self telling him that "if she lived, you'd never have gone back here to do/learn ____" or something? Even if Hiro died, he's already mucked with time and time travellers are notoriously annoying to be rid of; just try sorting through the Rama Tut/Iron Lad/Kang/Immortus stuff.
Next weeks looks to be a flashback, which takes some of the edge off this episode, which is a little bit of a drag, especially with Eden & the Man-Slave capturing Sylar. It could help set up the climax but "flashback episodes" tend to be filler-ish and when placed between climatic episodes, can be annoying to watch even if you get some character development. Again, something some anime is notorious for.
Still, the show is heating up from a few weeks ago and I am definately enjoying it.
