1: That happens all the time in movies. An actor getting a part and not having to audition because he's friends with the director isn't anything new or strange.

2: He is a really good fit for the character, though. He's a talented actor who's more than capable of playing that role.

'happens all the time' doesn't make it right, and doesn't mean I have to like it.
This tells me the character, and by extension the story, was an afterthought. Hiring the director's buddy and possibly cashing in on the stirrup they'd known a race change would cause, were the more likely primary motivators for that move. That's a clear indicator of misplaced focus, and it didn't, and still doesn't, bode well for the production as a whole.

They never actually shot on location?

Only twice that we know of.

And that was, from the looks of things, just for NYC exteriors (including exteriors for the Baxter Institute)......... even though they were in New Orleans to shoot it.

I think that's ridiculous.

For starters, I don't see anything wrong with directors casting their actor friends in things. It doesn't denote a lack of careful consideration. All it means is that a director wants to work with actors who he knows and is comfortable with and enjoys working with. That's completely reasonable. If you already know someone who's good for the part and who you work well with, going through a casting process is a waste of time.

Second, this in no way tells you or me or anyone that the character and the story were afterthoughts, or that the focus is in any way misplaced. It tells us that the director came onto the project, looked at the cast of characters, realized that he already knew someone who'd be perfect for one of the roles, and hired that guy instead of going through a casting process. How is that unreasonable? How does that reflect poorly on the production?

Heck, I can list any number of brilliant films where the director offered the role to people instead of going through the audition process. One method isn't inherently superior to the other.

And The Avengers filmed a lot of NYC exteriors in Cleveland. That's common.

I think TWS filmed in Cleveland too even though that was supposed to be set in DC/Virginia.

Although to be fair, The Avengers and The FF have strong ties to NYC, and it does seem ... wrong not have at least some on location shoots in NYC. (I think it's safe to say it's a budget issue here, which is understandable, but it just points to the lack of ambition and studio faith in this project).

Just seen those Doom Pics :csad:

Main Reason I stay away from the F$4 forums I don't like getting kicked in the nutts on a daily basis

It's offensive that he was given the role because he's buddies with the director, not because he was great in the audition or even because he's the best fit for the character.

This is what Michael B Jordan sang to Joss Trank to ensure he got a part in this movie:

"Cast me if you can" to the tune of "Get here if you can" by Brenda Russell (later performed by Oleta Adams):

You can cast me the crony way
You can cast the old fashioned way
You can cast me and not explain
Why you cast me, I don't mind

You can cast me as Mr Fan
Heck even Willie the Mail Man
I don't care how you cast me
Just cast me if you can

You can make me into a goat
Or Human Torch would really smoke
Let's head on down this slippery slope
And make this casting mine

You can cast me upon a whim
Even make me ol' Benjy Grimm
I don't care how you cast here
Just cast me if you can

There are fans and studios between us
Always something to get over
If I had my way, surely you would be closer
I need you closer

You can cast me against the norm
I don't mind being Susan Storm
That will pop the fans' big balloon
But you better cast me soon

You can cast cause you have a say
The fans will see this movie anyway
I don't care how you cast here
Just cast me if you can.

There aren't enough :whatever: emoticons in the world for this.

Seriously, Michael B. Jordan is going to be great in this role. There are plenty of things about this production worth being concerned about. His casting ain't one of them.

I'm baffled as to how you are baffled.

He's a good candidate for the part. We will, without question, play the character very well. Being upset that he was cast to play a character that he will do a good job with is silly.

I usually have no problem with directors casting friends in their movies. Many of my favorite movies are productions where the director or producer has put friends and people they worked well with before into the new movie......BUT......in all of those movies the director/producer did not piss off millions of people by putting their friend into a part that no one who was a fan of the original material felt they were totally wrong for.

Which bears absolutely nothing on script, characterization, and direction.

Which has nothing to do with wether or not he's the right choice for the part and wasn't what we were talking about.

Absolutely nothing. In fact as long as someone has played a similar character before the movie will be Oscar winning triumph. Triumph I say! :cmad: :whatever: :o

Why do you think Michael B. Jordan is totally wrong for this part? He's played similar characters in the past very well. As a fan of the original material, I see no indication that Jordan is totally wrong for the part, or even a little bit wrong for the part.

It's silly because you say it is?

It's silly because there's no reason to think he won't do a good job playing Johnny Storm.

I never said that.

Have you ever read a Fantastic Four Comic book? Have you ever seen a picture of Johnny Storm? Those are my reasons for thinking he is wrong for the part.

At this point, I'm not even convinced that you really sincerely think that Jordan is perfect for the part....I believe you are arguing the point for the sake of arguing the point. I mean hell, Jack Nicholson is a fantastic actor known for playing brash cocky smartaleck characters....why not put him in the part if looking nothing like how a character has looked for 50 years is so important to you.

In any case....I will occasionally discuss this with other posters, but I see no reason for us to talk anymore.
