Game of Thrones - HBO part 2 - Part 2

Have you seen Dr. Strangelove? It's that wonderfully eccentric Kubrick film about the Cold War. At the end of the movie, the hapless POTUS and his joint chiefs have failed to prevent a rogue crew from nuking Russia. In preparing for the massive loss of life and end of civilization that is nuclear war they and the crazy titular character make a plan to live in caves for generation(s) in the Rocky Mountains where men will be forced to repopulate the US in the future with multiple wives. But then one general has a terrifying notion. What if the Soviets also have a cave to hide in for a hundred years and are stock piling nuclear missiles to fire on them when their descendants come out? Well, they better start building some more bombs to make sure that when humans reclaim the nuclear wasteland in the future, they better be Americans.

My point of that is as long as there is a throne and the "shadow" it casts, there will be people fighting over it. Fighting until a claim or two is recognized by all. Civilization-threatening walking dead? Pssst. Just another annoyance the claimants will have to deal with in the coming years.

Heh I see your Dr.Strangelove and raise you a Watchmen :D
I agree with you to some extent, they'll always be crazy grasps for power from the Cersei Lannisters of the world, but I think once the wall comes down and the legions of undead start doing some damage then that "should" unite the realms of men against a common enemy, much like Oxymandias' fake alien from Watchmen did with the US and Soviets.
But either way I see your point and its valid. I just don't see Jon being used in those politics.

True, but as Reagan once remarked, rather cryptically. If aliens invaded, the American and Soviets would put their differences aside. Though they'd probably go right back to killing each other once the alien mothership blew up.

The show can be pretty brutal, but that's hardly surprising. Most shows, about medieval things (I know this is fantasy) really tone down the violence.

I

Anyway, my money on who will win when all the snow (heh) is settled is a union between the North and South by the marriage of Jon Stark and Daenerys Targaryen. After all the Targaryen are big on incest. Hint hint.

That's my prediction.
I would love it if Jon married Daenerys and they rules the seven kingdoms but that sounds like to much of a happy ending for George.

I want to like Stannis so badly because I'm a fan of those sort of stoic, cold, but fair and just characters, but so far he's coming across like a royal prick. I haven't read enough of the books yet to fully appreciate why, but from what I've gathered from all of your postings, he has every right to be pissed off. I'm still rooting for Stannis though. I like his moxy :oldrazz:

Best moment of this episode

Ugh, how does anyone who Robert's bastards are? I mean lets take the prostitute for example. She's a prostitute which means she was most likely sleeping with alot of men. How the heck do they know her daughter was Robert's? How would she know?

Also typically when you have bastards you end up making sure they are taken care of, so there is going to be a paper trail.

I haven't kept up with this thread the last day or so, so I'll just ask -

Has anyone *****ed about Cressen yet?

Does the actor who plays Robb remind anyone else of Henry Cavill?

Good first ep, but like someone else mentioned it did feel like a preview for the rest of the season which is good, as it allows the audience to get re-acquainted with all the characters.

As much as i hate King Jeoffrey, when ever he's on screen, he steals the show!

Didn't understand the ending with them killing the baby, etc; was that about finding Arya Stark, or eliminating all of King Roberts possible offspring?

Wasn't the blacksmith the one with next to Arya on the cart and the kings bastard son?

Arya Stark is in the same caravan as King Robert Baratheon's bastard son, lucky her.

Can't wait to see how Tyrion can manage as The Hand for his nephew the king. I have a feeling that he can manage it better than Joffrey's mother Cersei, who completely lost control of the situation at King's Landing.

Ratings are in and we have a winner:

Thrones returned to 3.9 million viewers. That’s up a massive 74 percent from its series debut last year. It also greatly improves upon the show’s previous all-time high, which was just over 3 million viewers. Including all three Sunday airings, the show delivered 6.3 million viewers. The numbers mean a third season renewal is pretty much guaranteed.

The guy who plays the King's bastard son...was he on Skins during the first 2 seasons?

I saw some parallels there. Though really, how big of a role does religion play in this story? It's not like they have a Vatican like Medieval Europe had.

Religion plays a huge f-ing part of the story. In Westeros we have the 7. The Drowned God in The Iron Islands.

Then there are the Heart Trees which most in the North and most Knights worship (they become knights in this world after several days of praying under the heart tree, notice after the initial beheading the first episode Ned goes to pray at his heart tree). Ned also has a Septa (nun) for his kids at Winterfell to educate them as well as teach them of the 7 and other religions.

I could go on about several other major religions, cults and cults that combine traditions. Every town has a Sept (Temple) to the 7. Most people worship 1 or more of the 7 (like The Crone and The Stranger), as well as paying tribute to the Heart Trees.

It's very much Europe emerging from under Rome's yolk. Though some Asia is thrown in (Dorne, etc.)
