Green Arrow series in the works at The CW - Part 2

Putting batman on the show is just not a good idea because people would probably be more interested in batman than Arrow. I remember the birds of prey tv. Half the time everyone wanted batman to make an appearance.

If you want Arrow to stand out on his own, the character needs to be well written and the show needs a plan of where they want to take the character. It seems like they do have a plan.

QFT.

Green Arrow started off as a Batman ripoff. The tone this show has decided to take has him following Batman's lead yet again. Putting Batman on the show will just make GA look like a sidekick.

I say they should stick to second tier DC characters in terms of guest appearances.

I really like the idea of seeing island flashbacks all through the season, but it might as well turn out cheesy as hell. For example, it shouldn't be used solely for the purpose of showing how he learned a specific skill mere moments after he's shown using it in the present.

Well why not? It worked wonderfully on LOST. Though of course that was more about learning something about one's own self than a particular set of skills. I wouldn't it either way.

Not really a show that I was going to invest time in beforehand, but what I've seen and with this tidbit, it's piqued my interest.

In the words of ol' Hal: I know right? :D

The commercials I saw during the Supernatural premiere looked good.

Did they show anything other the stuff that's already on YT?

Me neither. It reminds me of how they did Mad Eye Moody's crazy eye in the HP movies, and I always hated that. It (and this) looked like a toy/prop.

I remember that, it's not that hard to pull off but with cheesy props it would've been better if they tried something that didn't look so clunky.

Not sure. I didn't see the YT stuff. They had a few commercials. Seemed like there was a promo for Arrow during every commercial break. I even saw this guy!

Love me some Roger Cross!

I don't care what anyone says, but that little tidbit about the flash-backs going back and forth and being clustered around the entire series? I think that's just a brilliant way of telling the origin story! I suppose a lot of it is derived from Batman Begins but at the same time Green Arrow's always been the poor-man's Crusader (Hooded Crusader?) and for a good cause as well: I know they're underplaying the liberal/Occupy Wall-Street edge because CW isn't going for a political story (which is a shame in my opinion, even with The Dark Knight and Nolan's reticence on taking a political stance, which is arguably a typical position for any superhero, you still had some of those political themes addressed so that the audience could've made up their own minds about it. The superhero exists outside of politics, but at the same time his existence is sort of used to comment on what's really wrong with politics: to show exactly why he is outside of it).

As a poor-man's crusader, Arrow could've taken that stance. And what a Robin Hood parallel that would've been! I hope some of those original ideas are still there. Hell, you can't be an idealist and not think about what's politically correct and not. Maybe as he grows up, and the audience grows along with him, some of that would come to view.

I think most of it has to do with the ideologies of the show-runners themselves, and also the fact that by giving him a more bad-ass / conservative appeal by killing off goons they're trying to show that Machiavellian side instead of the liberal democrat side. Which is fine. He's a vigilante after all. The sort Batman continued to voice against in his films. So there's your distinction. And as a fan I'm buying it.

Clustering the origin is brilliant as well. Sure it'll remind people of LOST and I guess this might put off some viewers, but considering CW's history with Smallville, it's as if with this show they've sort of embraced both those worlds of Batman and CW's Superman: on one hand you're showing this origin story, and on a parallel level you're giving us what he did after he becomes the hero of the day. Not unlike how DC Comics would use flashbacks to reintegrate the backstory.

Like I said, I'm really looking forward to this!

I see the flashbacks working like they did in the old 70s Kung Fu show. He always flashed back to some moment in his training that bore relevance to his current dilemma. I think that will work well and gradually reveal more about his character.

John Barrowman will most likely be playing Dan Garrett AKA the Blue Beetle, another non superpowered hero.

Well that shouldn't be the only thing they do with the flashbacks, and of course we should see his training but I think it could look weird if for example, every episode starts with him learning something on the island which he need to use later on in the episode. I'm not sure if I'm putting it out correctly but I hope whatever they do it turns out good.

That's a good comparison lol, I don't know why they didn't just go for something that is used by modern day special ops units.

This starts next Wed., right?

That could work well, what I'm saying is that lets not just keep it to a skill and instead extend it to some kind of character-arc. Like say, what's that loose grudge he has with the principles for stopping the villain-of-the-week? The island, if things are going the way I think they are, is an example of extreme conditions right? So Ollie saw what, say a particular drive for preserving a water-source forced everything into some savage activity, in Star City we see Ollie learning about villain-of-the-week obsessing over preserving the source of his income even though it's harming people around him, and only the Arrow can foresee where this is going since he knows the savage heart of men... or something along those lines.

Oh yeah, then I realized I'm talking in present tenses and pretending we actually have any control over the show :oldrazz: my bad.

Well that shouldn't be the only thing they do with the flashbacks, and of course we should see his training but I think it could look weird if for example, every episode starts with him learning something on the island which he need to use later on in the episode. Yeah, like I said, they need to do it tastefully and give it some kind of thematic connection. the island is an example of extremity, what Ollie sees there he can cut through the superficiality of the people in Star City and see that savage core and respond to it. But you're right in saying that it shouldn't be turned into a formula, that'd get tired really fast, something most TV shows have to contend with.

That's a good comparison lol, I don't know why they didn't just go for something that is used by modern day special ops units.

That would've been much, much better. But eh... what do modern-day special op units use?

maybe something like Solid Eye?

^^ That would have definitely worked, I was thinking of something like this.

When the Arrow series debuts next week, it's going to be like weekly live-action Green Arrow movies instead of a mere TV series. The same goes with Nikita when its third season premieres on October 19.

Yeah those look a helluva lot better than what we got. Seriously it wasn't that hard to come up with goggles that evoke bad-assery. I wonder how much the tech in the series would be featured considering their budget-issues. The New-52 pretty much made Ollie into DC's version of Tony Stark (which was meh for me).

Currie Graham has been tapped to lead Royal Flush Gang on Arrow, TVGuide.com has learned.

The NYPD Blue alum has been cast as King, whose villainous alter-ego in the new CW series is Derek Reston. In the comics, Derek was initially Ace, though in this adaptation, Ace goes under the name Kyle Reston will be played by Copper's Kyle Schmid.

The CW's new superhero drama will follow the exploits of Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell), a wealthy playboy who survives a boating accident that leaves him stranded on a deserted island for five years. While there, he hones his archery skills to survive, birthing his alter ego, Arrow.

Discussing the new series with reporters Monday, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg stressed that everything in the series would be grounded in reality — including Reston's Royal Flush Gang. "You'll see... the dynamic of the family and the iconography of the playing cards are going to be there without the supernatural bent," he said. "I think we've come up with a really clever way to portray them."

The Royal Flush Gang will appear in the sixth episode, which Kreisberg called "one of the most successful attempts at alchemy that we've performed. ... The Royal Flush Gang was the most outlandish villains from the comics, but they turned out to be our most grounded villains. The relationship that Oliver has with King, the leader of the gang, we're really proud of it."

Graham, whose other credits include Raising the Bar and Boston Legal, joins previously announced guest stars John Barrowman, Tahmoh Penikett, Jeffrey Nordling, Michael Rowe and Jessica de Gouw.

Arrow premieres Wednesday at 8/7c on The CW.

i really hope they give some of these villains more than one episode. always hated when smallville would have a villain on for one episode and then you never see them again.

I was never a fan of SV's freak of the week. What I would actually like is some intelligent villians.

Well, this is the week...it's already been added to my DVR list.

I would imagine the villains will re-appear. I take it for now they will be trying to keep it so that the villains will be different for the first half of the season to grab an audience.
