Hans Zimmer Scoring The Man of Steel - Part 1

Launch may be my favorite sample so far but they're all so good right now.

Lisa Gerrard collaborated with Hans Zimmer on the Bible score, along with Lorne Balfe (whoever that is).

Just woke up. The soundtrack samples are now out?! :awesome:

I like it. But, my only complaint right now - where's the theme? I'm kind of disappointed that it doesn't really have one. It's almost like Zimmer said "we can't beat John Williams, so let's not even try - what we did in Batman works, let's try that." I like it, but I'm also really disappointed by it because there doesn't seem to have that kind of memorable theme that you'd recognize anywhere in the world or even attempt to have one. Since I was waiting/hoping for one I'm kinda let down that they didn't attempt to have one. It's good, but it blends in.

Listening to them now. Play y play-

-Nice Alieny sound in "look to the stars"
-The drums are ALIVE in "Oil Rig"
-Heard this in the trailer "Sent here for a reason"
-How DARK KNIGHT of you, Hans, in "DNA"
-Very GLADIATOR esque in "Good bye, my son"
-Ah, here are the horns. "If You Love These People'
-How...Titanic of you, Hans - "Krypton's Last"
-"Terraforming" not available
-Like the urgency of "Tornado"
-You Die or I do" not available
-Very "Thin Red Line ish" - Launch
-Another rouser with "Ignition"
-Epic and creepy - "I will find him"

All in all, very Zimmer esque. Lots of horns (duh), drums (duh), violins (huh?)

No Superman theme? :(

That's the problem with comic book movies these days. No iconic identifiable theme in general. It's almost the equivalent of TV series with cold openings and no theme tune anymore.

Not from what I can tell unless it's not heard in those 30 second bits. They all sounded different from one another. It was great music, but nothing that if I heard it I'd instantly know it was Superman. I'm just hoping the theme is somewhere past what's in those clips. Because I really wanted something that if you heard it, you'd instantly recognize it.

There are reoccurring themes.

And you are judging all of this off samples? For all we know they haven't even revealed their Molossus yet.

I don't really hear any and if there was - it was subtle, it should be instant recognition. And that's the problem, it shouldn't just be "oh these sound alike, they deal with the same arc" it should be one singular tune that you can play anywhere in the world and people would know. Something that really stands-out. As said, I'm hoping that there is a theme and that it is past those tracks.

And they did. For me. They are also there, from a musical point of view.

I'm certain Superman has a motif - as I said before, my money is on the last minute of trailer 3. Here's a quote from Zimmer in the past talking about his mentor Stanley Myers:

“I think the thing that he really taught me was, you gotta have a tune. If you don’t have a tune, you have nothing. You’re just grazing like cows in the field. … Dark Knight [the Joker’s Theme] is one note, and then the Batman thing is really two notes. So a tune doesn’t have to be a lot of notes, but it has to have purpose. … It has to be somehow intellectually defensible for it to resonate emotionally.”

I'm pretty sure the music we heard in the trailer where the drums were banging hard is the theme and it rocks. Tbh though I think times have changed you don't need a massive theme like the Superman theme or Jaws etc

The sad tunes sound like they're the same. But, point is -- all films have that. Play those anywhere in the world and there isn't anything in them that's loud enough. It's just, "yep, those belong with the same film - what is it?" Which you can say for most composed films. I mean one singular connective tissue across most of them that when you hear it you instantly recognize it.

- Superman
- James Bond
- Star Wars
- Indiana Jones
- Psycho
- Jaws
- Batman
- Spider-Man even had one
- Etc.

That one stand-out couple of notes that you'd hear throughout and that you'd know throughout. And by the time the academy awards roll by, should be nominated. I'm talking that level of instant recognition. As said, I'm hoping there's something. But it sounds like they went completely opposite of the John Williams route not that the John Williams theme isn't in it, but there isn't any singular unifying chords nor building chords to it throughout most of them that I can hear right now.

Hmm... I'd prefer he have more notes than just one or two notes. He needs to be be Wandering Hans and allow his hands to wander up and down the piano.

Just as long as he isn't wandering up and down Anne Hathaway. :funny:

Where is that picture of him sitting behind her with his hands wandering anyway?

Just imagine that motif playing at the end of the movie, with Superman doing a crazy-fast flyby around Metropolis and outer space.

He works a lot with hans zimmer, the stuff he does for games is pretty good as well...he cranked out a great Assassins creed 3 score last year.

I understand it's not to all people's tastes, but the simple nature of his tones goes a long way in creating his epic vibe, in my opinion. The rising Batman note, Joker's note, Inception's 'Dream is Collapsing' and so on. But he manages to make them all sound unique. It's what he likes doing.

Definitely not!

So far so good these samples are great I'm loving what Zimmer's done so far.

Who is the fellow did the SR score? Often overlooked.
