One of my closest friends is a PR agent in the industry in CA. I have several girlfriends with very, very successful jobs who do this for a living in New York. Trust me...you are giving these people way too much credit.
Yes, they have lives. But relationships are absolutely 100% set up by press agents. Photographers are called to certain places (like the grocery store or hiking trails) and then those pictures are 'leaked" to the magazines in order to create a story.
Relationships are fabricated. Rumors are stared by "anon" sources. Like that "rumor" that Gina Carano was going to star as Wonder Woman. Someone started that rumor and then "leaked" it to a press source so that it would keep getting repeated and picked up. That's how this works.
My point is...do not be naieve. This is absolutely a game. Some celebs choose to play it. Some don't.
Amy Adams, for example, has chosen not to play it. She has 4 Oscar nominations. Clearly, it hasn't hurt her not to play that game.
Not all celebs play it. Henry, imo, is a gorgeous, talented guy. I hope he gets new PR. And i'll leave it at that.
