INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE: Why Will Smith Opted Out

“Well, you know, like near the very beginning, I wanted to work with him and he was very excited to be in it, but then after a while, you know, he just was tired of sequels and he did another science fiction film, which was his father-son story, so he opted out. I was first very disappointed, but then actually a couple friends told me, ‘Well, this could be a great chance to try something new,’ and I said, ‘Hm, maybe I should.’ It took me three years to figure that one out, but actually at the end I figured it out and now it’s like a handover. We deal with the disappearance of Will Smith – I don’t want to give it away – but in a very kind of respectful manner and he’s still part of this universe, but it’s mainly kind of a little bit a handover from the old generation to the new.”

He should've just made Independence Day and not bothered with After Earth, since it wasn't any good anyway. At least Independence Day 2 is more likely to be a hit.

I would say he should quit trying to make his kid a star. It's not gonna happen.

I dont a have problem with Jaden Smith like alot of people seem to have. He''s not the first actor who uses their family connections to get in the business and he wont be the last.. Heck connections is how most people in the real world get jobs.

As for Smith opting out of this film, if the original script was supposed to be a father-son adventure flick, then im glad he isnt a part of it. ID was always ensemble film and the sequel seems to be continuing that tradition. His presence will be missed but almost everyone else is involved so im not complaining.

The whole thing about Jaden Smith ha been blow way out of proportion. He's been in 3 movies. 2 of which I hear are actually good-decent movies.

This sounds very Robotech-ish to me now.

Yep. A lot hate for no good reason.

There's nothing wrong with the way Whitman looks. People are friggin stupid. It would have been way cooler to have the original girl back. That she's apparently got a successful career going makes it even more annoying. It's not a dealbreaker but it is a pretty big fail. :down

These aliens had better look the same. No need to reinvent the wheel there.

The thing with Jaden Smith is that his latest film sucked and he was terrible in it, but when he started out he was realy good in Karate Kid, i don't realy know what happened to him, but after puberty he seemed to stop caring. Back in 2010 i do think he got the success he deserved, but since then he has given a terrible performance in After Earth, i'm not sure he even likes acting.

Some of the negative reaction is that Jaden is thrust into the lead roles these big tentpole projects for no apparent reason other than who his dad is. If he had a couple of Fruitvale Stations or notable supporting roles on his cv, he could garner some respect.

Yep. And she looks more like a secret agent government woman than Maika Monroe. If they wanted Maika Monroe as the love interest for Hemsworth, why not just make her a separate character, and keep Mae Whitman as the ex-president's daughter? It's not like they had a limit on the number of characters they could have in this movie. But even Whitman could've still been the love interest herself. I think it would've been really cool to have her too.

It would almost be like if there were a True Lies sequel and having young Eliza Dushku's character replaced with a different actress now. Of course, people see Eliza as hot now so they would still get her, but still a similar principle.

But maybe she's not the image they would like for Liam Thorsworth:

Liam can, and has, done worse. :o

Mae Whitman's involvement or lack thereof is beyond irrelevant to me. She had a bit part as a child actress in the first one and I didn't even know it was her until it was pointed out to me recently.

Seriously when people look back at ID4 was the President's kid in top 100 of things you remember?

I wouldn't be like "nah, I'm all right" if she was offering it up though. :o

Maika Monro tho indeed.

I remembered the stripper's kid more than her since it was the same kid from Fresh Prince and Little Rascals. :woot:

But, you make a good point. There have been plenty of sequels that take place years later compared to the previous film and recast kid characters.

If Whitman had not still been acting, I would never thought of her for the role again much like I never really thought of Bagley.
