Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

aliens were the most logical choice to go with in Crystal Skull especially with the 50's setting. I'll never get why people think aliens were too far fetched for Indy when the first flick had souls coming out of a box melting faces.

Taking the series in a sci-fi direction for a film is one of my favourite aspects of the film. It just fits the setting. I'd say the 4th and 5th film embrace their period setting the most and I'm here for it.

The giant UFO at the end is classic-looking, and I dig it.

Plus, I thought Cate Blanchett was a great villain!

Agreed.

The two most maligned films - Kingdom and Temple - are the only two films that feature a memorable main villain. They're bold, colorful, and have a 'look'.

But Belloq? I mean. He's 'fine'? Donovan? A bit dull.

Toht was a great secondary villain in the first film.

omg gentle giant is making some sick collectibles.

yea i remember one of my friends complained about the aliens after she watched it: "Indiana Jones shouldn't be about aliens!"

and i was like "WTF are you talking about?"
:funny:

and agreed about blanchett, i love her villain in KOTCS.

While I understand skepticism, I don't get why some are so against the idea of an old Indy story. An aged adventurer is a pretty interesting concept, and the passage of time presents new perspectives and also opportunities to tell even more emotionally resonant stories. Time is something that is undefeatable and it beats everybody. From what I've seen, time is a major element of this movie. From the retirement clock, to the era itself, Indy's age, and The Dial. Makes me think of Eastwood in Unforgiven.

Idk, personally I feel like I just don't really need an emotionally resonant Indiana Jones movie. All those movies need to be are fun adventures, I don't wanna leave the theater thinking about how Indy will be in Hospice soon...lol...

But the new trailer does look good, Mangold is great, and Harrison seems really hyped for it, so I'll give this a chance despite how dogs*** KoTCS was.

Emotionally resonant doesn't mean knocking on deaths door though haha. I think just coming to terms with age after all the years of adventures is something worth exploring. Even for a character like Sallah who seems to believe Indy has more in him too. I just dig the idea tbh.

Maybe an unpopular opinion but while Crystal Skull and Temple of Doom are considered the weakest of the Indy movies I'd say they have the best "main" villains in Spalko and Mola Ram. I still really like Belloq but Toht is the first one who comes to mind when I think of villains in Raiders. Ditto with Donovan in Last Crusade not being as memorable as Elsa.

Mola Ram was awesome! I dug how scary he was. He honestly might be my favorite.

Temple of Doom as a whole is just a fantastic film and sometimes I think it's the most fun of the Indy films. I love the darker tone, I love the idea of a cult, and I love the final act of the movie. It's just a blast! I think, objectively Raiders is the best, and while I love Temple, I gotta go with The Last Crusade as my favorite. The emotional factor of that movie really puts it at the top spot. The search for the grail bringing Indy and his father closer together after haven't a really distant relationship. Its just all fantastic. The leap of faith sequence with John's score is just *chefs kiss*.

Indiana Jones shouldn’t be about aliens.

I still don't fully get what they were trying to do with Mac's character. Guy flip-flopped so much between sides that it was confusing to understand what his actual motivation was.

In my nightmares I can still hear Ray Winstone screaming "JONSEY"

Temple of Doom rocks. It has so many crazy horror elements that you don’t typically see from Spielberg. He had that same type of energy when he made Duel and Jaws. I miss it.

I 100% agree with you. Mola Ram and Spalko were fun to watch. I can't say the same for Donovan.

And I like Belloq decently enough - I just also simultaneously find him a bit bland and cliche with the "We're not so different, you and I" trope.

Toht rules and I think he should've been the main villain.

I saw a discussion on Reddit and a YouTube video where the people were claiming that the new trailer is 'evidence' of reshoots influenced by fan outcry - and people there were patting themselves on the back about how they "did it!" and got Disney to come down hard on Kathleen Kennedy to 'change' the plot-points that would've doomed the film.

How do they not see they're LARPing, at this point?

They're literally making up their own narrative about what's going on behind the scenes, get super angry about it and whine - then when it turns out to be false, they claim they are the reason things got 'changed'.

It's like living your own fanfiction.

I'd watch Kingdom over anything from these days, honestly. If Dial of Destiny lives up to the hype, then I would say that's a great 5-film run and I will rewatch them endlessly til I die.

I'm not a 'collector' of anything, really - my big fear is ever being a clutter-y person. BUT, I do have a few Indiana Jones items in my decor.

This Crystal Skull may just be my favourite of what I've got, along with the Grail Diary.

When the sunlight hits this thing - it's awesome.

My hallway shelf has become a good chunk of my Indy stuff.

I'd like to someday get an accurate Idol, but this one was a gift from a beloved friend so I couldn't part with it ever.

Reality.

Its a combination of fragile ego that NEEDS to be right and the need to keep the outrage grift continuing.

Oh absolutely. Last night I mentioned Mangold and how good hands we are in plus with the review embargo being so early, and every comment was "reshoots with terrible test screening responses say otherwise". A lot of these people WANT this movie to be terrible to confirm their biases unfortunately.

Crystal Skull's idea wasn't bad, it was just the execution that killed it. Everything also looked so glossy and fake, it lacked that Indy grit the other 3 movies had.

Last Crusade ranks second in the series for me, but the lack of grit really began with that film, to be honest.
