James Bond In Skyfall - Part 8

It still doesn't touch a hair on "You Know My Name".

One of the best Bond songs ever in my opinion. I view it as the anthem for the Craig Bond. Just as I view Tom Jones' 'Thunderball as Connery's anthem, and Carly Simon's 'Nobody Does it Better' as Moore's anthem. If that makes sense.

Nevermind, they did help make the foundations.

But I will admit in terms of the modern action hero, yeah, James Bond is up there.

A lot of action movies owe itself to Goldfinger which did raise the bar for all eventual action movies.

The first real action heroes in Hollywood cinema were the cowboys I believe. John Wayne in Stagecoach is a great example.

If we are talking "modern action heroes" I would say they are far more derivative of Indy and John Mcclane. Those that take a true beating but keep on coming. Even present day Bond is far more like them.

I actually like the Jack White/Alicia Keys "Another Way to Die," but yeah, the solo Keys version is better. Either way, "You Know My Name" is indeed excellent. I didn't know how I felt about it the very first time I heard it, which was before seeing the movie, but once I did see the movie, it clicked, and I just fell hard for it.

Didn't Jack write the song? I like the song, but I think it would have been better without their mix of vocals. Either one going solo would of been better.

Not a fan of Adele's. She has a great voice, I just mean for a Bond theme, I'd rather have some singer or band a little more "low-key" if that makes any sense. You can't turn on the radio without hearing a song from Adele these days, she's starting to get on my nerves.

I still hold Cornell's You know my name as one of the best Bond themes in the whole series. I'd rewatch the movie right now just to hear it again. It's right up there with A-Ha's The Living Daylights and Duran Duran's A View to a Kill (Yes I'm a sucker for 80's cheesy bands)

We have all the time in the world is also one of my favourites.

"The Living Daylights" is underrated. Not up there with "Goldfinger" or "Nobody Does It Better," but I like it.

"We have All the Time in the World" is not a Bond main theme song. The main theme song for OHMSS is Barry's OHMSS instrumental. It is also the best by miles.

That reminds me: Anyone know if there's a particular reason David Arnold isn't doing the Skyfall score? Or is it just that Sam Mendes didn't approach him and went with Thomas Newman? Newman's great, but I admit, I'll miss Arnold.

I know.

Can I still like it, please?

Of course. :woot:

I just thought we were talking about the main theme songs. A lot of people don't realize that isn't the main theme song for OHMSS.

Off the top of my head my favorite 5.

1. OHMSS
2. You Know My Name
3. You Only Live Twice (Don't like the movie too much, but love the song)
4. Thunderball
5. Goldfinger/Goldeneye

Yeah, but it was written especially for the movie wasn't it? I mean it's still a theme from the film, just not the main title theme. More like the love theme.

"Bolded for truth".

I'm not really into Thunderball's theme though. I'd swap that with A view to a kill's.

We all know Duran Duran tops everything. :o

When I think Bond themes I think of the main title tracks, which is what I thought we were talking about. So just a small misunderstanding on my part. But, as we are talking about the others themes used in the films as well, I really like Vesper's. Very beautiful, yet understated.

I haven't heard "A View to a Kill" in forever. Not too big on the movie and even when I rarely watch it, I skip most of it. But I really like Tom Jones' voice on "Thunderball".

They should've nixed that song as soon as Jack White brought it to them with that cliched title. Didn't they think "No Jack, this sounds too much like Die Another Day... or Die Another Way."

White couldn't come up with something more original? Especially since they wanted to avoid titles with "die" in it. Maybe the artist for Skyfall will come up with yet another variation. Just change a word here or there and change the word order: Today Another Sky?

I can't for the life of me remember it... I haven't watched Casino Royale in far too long. I'll be back in 2 hours and 24 minutes...

James Bond was an influence on Indiana Jones.

George Lucas has said on various occasions that Sean Connery's portrayal of British secret agent James Bond was one of the primary inspirations for Jones, a reason Connery was chosen for the role of Indiana's father in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade :cwink:
"The Living Daylights" is underrated. Not up there with "Goldfinger" or "Nobody Does It Better," but I like it.
I like The Living Daylights. Nothing wrong with a little cheesey 80s music :woot:
Come to think of it, great as Adele may be, I think I'd rather hear Florence and the Machine do a Bond theme... I'm just loving everything I hear from her these days.
I'd rather hear Bat For Lashes do a Bond theme

My 007 music:

Connery - "From Russia With Love" by Matt Munro

Moore - "For Your Eyes Only" by Sheena Easton (My favorite Bond theme song of all time)

Dalton - "License To Kill" by Gladys Knight

Brosnan - "Tomorrow Never Dies" by Sheryl Crow

Craig - "You Know My Name" by Chris Cornell

Yep, but that is only one inspiration, and clearly one that did not hold much weight as the character continued on.

Indy starts out like Bond. He is a cool and disarming. And then Raiders starts its second act and Bond becomes his own beast, more akin to the slightly "stupid brave" American associated with cowboys. He is slightly bumbling and not the coolest under pressures and puts himself in harm's way for moral and emotional reasons.

Just watch ToD. Indy is almost an American parody of Bond. He has the suit, the slicked back hair and he is acting cool as a cucumber. And all hell breaks loose and he shows his ineptness and lack of willingness to look the other way time and again and it leads to pain.

When Indy gets himself into trouble he actually feels it. He isn't bulletproof like film Bond. He shows cowardice at times, along with a truly good heart.

Sheena Easton - For Your Eyes Only ftw

(Though Barry's OHMSS instrumental is the real winner here, I just love that Sheena pop-song so much)

I love them both, but of the two, I really feel like Adele's voice is just tailor-made for a Bond theme.

I have to mention Live and Let Die as being among the best songs. They have been playing it quite a bit at the Olympics too.
