Another voice of reason that will fall on deaf ears. Sadly the modern fan is a selfish bastard that wants their every whim catered to or else the product isn't 'faithful' to the character.

Or perhaps some people simply don't like it? It's grown on me, but that doesn't mean it has to do the same for everyone else. Some are being pretty over the top with the hate though.

Apples and oranges. That pic was just a close up shot of his face. Doesn't show his green hair, his purple suit or anything. Leto's reveal pic shows him shirtless, covered in tattoos, with silver teeth, wearing one glove like Michael Jackson or something, and looking like a punk rocker from a Joker themed band. It's actually mind boggling to see some people use the word perfect in their analysis of this horrible design.

That's a bit strong. The Joker is widely loved as a genre villain, and those who love him love him the way that he is. Nobody is a "bastard" for feeling a bit disappointed with such a jarring re-tooling of his classic image.

All the same, I think this image is as jarring as it is/would be, and I don't rule out the possibility that it is a bit deceptive.

Obviously the essence is the most important part. And cosmetic changes will happen. They have always happened. But disappoinment in cosmetic changes is not always being mad becuase it's not "faithful" enough.Sometimes things just look stupid, and the face tattoos are one of those things.

Joker has had dozens of different looks in the past. What matters ... the constant here ... is his characterization.

That's a weak defence for a lame-o design of a character. This thread used to be people all champing for classic natty dressed clean dandy looking Joker, and now we get punky tattoo silver tooth Marilyn Manson, and suddenly it don't matter what he looks like it's all about his characterization. Sorry folks but that don't fly. Comics are a visual medium. Movies are a visual medium. So the way the character looks is mega important and this Joker is one lame looking Joker. Tear tattoos and damaged labels on his head. Oy vey.

I wonder what Grant Morrison thinks about it. Being as how his interpretation of Batman is that everything is canon reason the Joker always has a different look and personality in the comics is because he intentionally changes the way he is.

I agree that the way the character looks is important. If, say, the Joker were dressed like Catwoman and not at all like a clown, that would be a problem.

But here's the amazing thing... I can have preferences for how I wish the character would appear, while still being completely okay with this different interpretation. Amazingly, there's not a false dichotomy between championing a cleanly dressed Joker and being okay with this one. At the end of the day for me not every hill is worth dying on. I would have preferred that Bane in TDKR have his comic-book appearance, to be honest. But I was totally cool with the Darth Vader muzzle device thing... I thought it worked really well.

So pardon me for not joining in on the hysteria over this look. It has some precedence in the comics (albeit recent ones) and as long as the characterization is right, I'm going to enjoy it. My statement wasn't even a "defence" of this look (though you obviously took it that way). It was just my opinion.

Grant Morrison would love it, because he loves taking The Joker to very dark places.

To be clear, he's still adapting to the prison environment in the film, but the tattoos in the photo don't accurately represent what he'll look like.

I'd have a good laugh if this is all part of a promotion for the character's 75th anniversary and they're releasing a couple of photos of Leto in different get-ups/settings like those variant comic book covers.

EXACTLY THIS. I've been suggesting this idea for a while now. It would be a brilliant way to pull one over on everyone on his birthday.
