Why especially if they include Thanos? Not many people (enough to make a dent anyway) are clamoring for (or are aware of) Thanos.

Well I think Marvel has pulled off making lessor known characters popular. Thanos is a total unknown to 99 percent of the world save for Marvel comic fans. Despite that he is a good character and can be an awesome villain. He's complex and has a rich back story. Written and presented correctly he can shine in a film. Marvel will introduce him and pull it off. He's the just the right villain needed for an Avengers film. The smaller Earth based villains are suited better for the solo films. I always felt that Thanos would been a good villain in a stand alone SS film but it'll never happen cause Fox has the SS. I like that Marvel is trying to introduce him into the movie verse, especially with the news that A Guardians of the Galaxy film is in the early stages of production.

obsidian, that'll never happen bro. marvel can't get a FF, spidey, or a wolvie cameo because of other studios. no way that dc and marvel make a film together.

I'd bet money, that ten years from now we'd still be talking about a possible JL film.

WB/DC needs to get their house in order and get serious.

It's time to start thinking outside the box and that doesn't mean copy Marvel.

The DC Universe is rich with history, characters and stories...they need to get directors, writers and staff that will take the material to heart and create a vision that will bring DC to life.

Basically...it's now or never for DC/WB. Let's hope their willing to compete in the movie market...because I whole-heartedly believe they are worthy contenders...

plus I want my DC vs. Marvel movie....ya'll know that has to happen somewhere down the line....

I agree it's crunch time for WB.

They either want to capitalize on their DC properties or not. And it's totally possible they really don't see a need to capitalize on them. The Hobbit will be huge for WB and the studio has purchased a raft of book rights recently hoping for the next Twilight or HG.

If WB does want to really use it's DC library they need someone like Nolan in an overseer. He has a proved vision. He is done with Superman w/MOS in post and that leavres him only the Batman reboot for 2015. Meaning he has time on his hands and WB should make the most out of that time.

No copying Marvel. Worst thing WB could do now is rush JL cause TA is so massively huge. WB simply can't compete on the team film level when they can't compete on the solo film level.

IronMan, Thor, Cap and TA.

What does WB have - Batman.

I recently rewatched SR after having seen Thor and Cap this summer and it's - well sad really. What a world of difference. SR looks increasigly stale/pointless/lame as each new Marvel Studio film comes out. That applies to GL too.

It's to the point where Marvel's success can no longer be attributed to luck. Clearly they have a well thought out plan/path forward. And much, much talent in their movie-making division.

SR is whatever to me. But GL :(

Makes me sad thinking about it

I tyhink a billion dollar TA hurts chances of JL taking off.

I think it's the opposite.

Avengers being successful sends a message that such teamup films do work, which will make it easier for Warners execs to greenlight JL.

Forget the company competition, every Comic book movie that does well helps greenlight the next property coming down the pipeline.

OTOH, if it encourages the WB execs to greenlight a JLA film "because super teams are big," without a good idea of how to do it. . .

Exactly.

Aside from Batman, WB can't pull off solo DC superhero films.

So now, because Marvel has pulled off a billion dollar team film with TA, WB is going to dive in a try to do the same with a JL film?!

Think SR and GL.

WB has no business trying to do a 300 million JL film until they have proved they can do a successful solo DC film aside from Batman.

I suspect WB gets this and won't do a "Hail Mary" just because TA has become the most successful, it's sure looking that way, film in superhero history.

They have all of the business doing that. They have the money and the rights, they can do what they want with them. They're not going to put it off because some guy on the internet said they had to do solo movies first.

No, they are going to put it off because of their shareholders and risk/reward bottom line reality. Horn lost his job in large part because of SR's poor performance. I doubt Robinoff will be as reckless.

WB ain't beholding to any guy or gal on the internet. They are, however, beholding to their stakeholders and that, IMO, will put them off on doing a JL anytime soon.

i love how people who know nothing about the business try to talk about the business

im not as familiar with my studio execs as I should be

I'm not either. I Googled it and the article I found was from March, 2011. Wasn't sure if it was something that was announced before and just took a while to happen or something.

So Im in Mexico and I saw the avengers yesterday and as a huge DC fan, it was so painfully enjoyable I couldn't stand it. It was everything a JL movie could've been. And it's going to be so hard for JL to be as good as or better than avengers. WB pulled a stupid move not having done this first, or not letting Whedon do WW. If they don't pull their act together, they're going to fail big time. Darkseid or any alien invasion is now out of the question because it will seem as a copycat of the avengers, and now next year, even Zod might be jepeordized because Loky kept saying kneel before me and all this stuff. It all made me very sad :(

Interesting comments.

I haven't seen TA yet but I've read posts by people who have desribing it as the definitive superhero film of all time.

WB has a very tall order to follow up with anas good JL film. The cost alone - marketing and all might approach or exceed 400 million. Ouch.

W/o successful solo films WB has to introduce these characters fresh in a JL film. Unlike TA which had a staple of 3 characters with highly successful solo films in the can. And which they clearly leveraged to the film's advantage.

At this point WB would be foolish to rush into JL. That IMO is a recipe for disaster.

One thought - WB will not fail big-time even if they never make another superhero film. WB is highly successful w/o DC and their strategy may be a permanent backseat for DC properties. Overall WB has not done well with superhero films.

Justice League: Mortal would be perfect. Rework the subplot about Talia Al Ghul and the League of Assassins, [BLACKOUT]that's already being used in The Dark Knight Rises[/BLACKOUT], maybe remove Aquaman and Martian Manhunter, and it's perfect.

well, if there's one thing dc can do is do darkseid before we see thanos on screen. then they don't look like copycats.

what would have been cool is if, like in the watchmen, where ozymandias destroys then rebuilds new york, have a signs of gotham's reconstruction with wayne enterprises and lex corp banners if bane destroys gotham in tdkr.

another thing i think they can do is, have the JL start after the death of superman, have them all team up after he dies fighting doomsday, then have him return for darkseid.

That's a spoiler outside of the batman spoiler thread, thanks, could you put that in the spoiler box, please?

Nice to hear that we two feel this way. Maybe its possible that studios have had this thought too. I hope so, the idea that someone involved with making this movie might think to distance our JLA film from Avengers maybe we should make it animated with CG might be pretty good. I would be totally behind this idea. Avengers works better live action because they are more down to earth characters. JLA has characters with such grand powers that doing it in CG would be better I think.
And although I would want the CG to be done differently, perhaps a little more stylised and cartoony like the Incredibles, this is an example how grand scale it could be:

Here are some scenes from the Incredibles to show how the animation could look.

Here is a preview from the Green Lantern animated series:

And here is the CGI Batgirl:

And here is the CG Spiderman/Hulk/Iron Man thing

And finally here is Hulk versus Superman

This site shows a guy's character designs, just showing that the designs of the characters in the JLA movie could be very stylized or detailed.

I think making the JLA movie CGI, using motion capture suits,
would be the best way to go and would get this movie off the ground so fast our heads would spin.

this one went over our heads, but we didn't have to go too far.

Avengers has already done over 200million internationally and is projected to be over 500million with the US opening by Sunday. I know Warner has toyed with doing a Justice League movie. If Avengers does what its projected to do. Warner would be foolish not to looking to get a JL movie going. Use Bale as Batman...Use Cavill as Supes. Heck even use Reynolds as Green Lantern. Yes, I know Christopher Nolan has been adamant about his Batman being in a seperate universe as the other heroes. But, really?!? Give him creative control as producer to make sure it stays to his level. Just don't let this opportunity pass.

That's the point. Nolan's level is "No other superheroes. Ever."

If THE AVENGERS continues to clean up at the box office, unless THE DARK KNIGHT RISES makes a billion dollars AND THE MAN OF STEEL makes a billion dollars...and that remains his attitude, I'd say he can expect to find himself without any further control of DC properties fairly soon.

I would imagine there would be no such stipulation with the future Batman franchise, and I highly doubt Henry Cavill's Superman being forbidden to appear in a future JLA film is written in stone.
