"Let Your Soul-Glo": The Experience Returns

I dunno Manic. I think they are at their zenith now actually. LOTS of decent songs on the current CD.

Did the BEP's always have 4 members though? I seem to remember them only having 3 when they first came out?

They were a trio for their first 2 albums. It was just Will.i.am, Apl, and Taboo. They added Fergie on the Elephunk album, and her first single with the group was "Where is the Love."

I was a fan of their older sound, when they released songs like "Joints and Jam." Ever since adding Fergie to the group, they've been relying on her to appeal to broader audiences. It's even reached the point where either Apl and Taboo don't rap in the songs at all, or their contributions are negligible & uninspired.

Sums up exactly how I feel about the group.

The truly sad part about the Black Eyed Peas is that whenever they do still record a good song, they tuck it away and never make a single out of it. From their Monkey Business album, they released crap like "My Humps" and "Don't Phunk with My Heart" as singles, while "Like That" (a song that features Q-Tip, Talib Kweli, John Legend, and Cee-Lo) went unheard by most people.

I hate hate HATE to say it because I think it gets tossed around way too much, but BEP sold out. They made a conscious effort to go after mainstream appeal and album sales and they sacrificed their music to do so.

Maybe they thought that kind of single would scare away crossover audiences? Too urban-leaning perhaps?

I think that's exactly what they did. Can't really hate them for doing that, but it is disappointing know they can make much better music IMO.

One of the reasons I respect Outkast so much as a group is that they stayed pretty consistent but showed legit growth from album to album (though they always had critical acclaim AND sold a lot of records). With BEP Bridging the Gap was more consistent with their previous work and showed some growth, but then Elephunk came out and it was a totally different (and watered down) sound.

I hate using the term "sold out," but that's exactly what they did. It's okay to crossover, and it's okay to experiment with your own sound, and I'll even say it's okay to sell your music to advertisers (really, people were too hard on MC Hammer in the 90s), but it's not okay to sacrifice your music for the sake of money. Black Eyed Peas used to make music that was both fun and well made. Now their songs are hollow and poorly written, and all for the sake of being more popular. "I Gotta Feeling" was a terrible song!

Maybe, but can the hip-hop fans have a bone thrown our way? Even Apl's Tagalog songs get released as singles in the Philippines (Granted, "Bebot" is my jam).

Then your current ringtone is hollow and poorly written.

If I had a theme song for my life, it'd be this song right chere...

After all these years, how glorious is this song still?

When people talk about the Rolling Stones and The Beatles I honestly feel Earth Wind & Fire should be mentioned right along with them. They never had th record sales or the exposure that the other groups had but their catalog of music is just as impressive and influential.

Did anyone else know that last year N*E*R*D were planning on adding a female singer to the group?

I read about it and the comments were people saying that they were going the Black Eyed Peas route and selling out, a few months later I read that they decided not to do it saying the girl they picked did go with their sound.

If they had completely changed/dumbed down their sound just to add some "cute" white chick to their group and get better record sales and more mainstream appeal then I'd totally understand people being pissed.

I don't think N.E.R.D. would do that though as they're not exactly hurting in regards to mainstream acceptance, critical acclaim, or even album sales (when it comes to their production).

The BEP's were hurting for album sales until they added Fergie and put her front and center.

I just saw these mofos in concert last night:

They f**king ROCKED IT. I have never had so much fun in my life at a concert. In fact...I think it was the best concert I've EVER attended...they were so hype and redonkulous. The crowd was like...having a party in the aisles. And when the half-way mark of "I'ma Be" came on, everyone lost it.

And their costumes! OMFG! How crunk are these people????:up:
Good to hear you had a good time. Atleast Fergie didn't wet herself on stage this time.

What act was supporting them?
Cheryl Cole is supporting them on their UK tour as Will.I.Am some produced tracks on her solo album.

The British Rap scene is big again all these rappers are getting number 1 records again and its mostly young black guys who have an education, don't have criminal records and don't talk about selling drugs or shooting people either.

One rapper called tinchy stryder record label was funded by a politician who is stryders manager.

Yeah there used to be another singer in the group, a black lady named Kim...something. :o Superior singer to Fergie (not hard to do) but didn't have that crossover appeal they wanted.

She's the one singing on Joints and Jams

I agree with you.

And when did Fergie wet herself on stage???
If was a few years ago. If I remember correctly, apparently she didn't have time to actually go to the restroom so she went on the side of the stage and when she went back on there was a stain on her pants.

And she tried to play it off by saying it was sweat.
