Maybe because of how divided this film has made people.

3 and a half more million for bragging rights lol.

That's all under the franchise. I am sure that all the spec scripts and treatments that were written between "Superman Returns" and "Man of Steel" were lumped into the budget of the latter film as well. That's just the way it works. Somebody has to pay for that and it generally comes out of the franchise budget. The fact remains that even though "Superman Returns" grossed $391 million, the expectation from the studio was for the film to take in $500 million, and it did not do that (note that "Batman Begins" grossed less yet, on a $150 million production budget, it got a sequel). That is also why they did not seek a sequel to that film. It just did not produce the kind of revenue they wanted for the money spent.

One other thing that is not being factored in is the revenue that Man of Steel is getting from its promotional partners ($160 million). That would actually put the total gross at $356 million right now.

Why do you need to add these? It just confuses and waters down the already impressive weekend this movie is having. Iron Man 3 had promotional tie-ins as well but they never announced the earnings or made a big deal out of it.

Not really. It shows the real popularity of the film, which should aid in the decision to make future ones. Sure, IM3 had its share of promotions, but the size and scope of the promotional partners that Man of Steel had was unprecedented. The latter film had over 100 promotional partners that brought them over $160 million in revenue. The only other film that came close to that was "The Lorax" last year and they had around 70 partners bringing that film just over $50 million. I doubt that IM3 did that or else you would be hearing about it.

I've seen this movie yesterday in the Fathers Day crowed. 3D. I was shocked by how much BETTER the movie came across in 3D. The picture was much more clearer and more revolutionary to the film.

I've seen it FOUR times, and each time I walk out with a DIFFERENT feeling. Man of Steel is my OWN masterpiece!

Oh yeah, my audience was very chippy and actually laughed in many parts so to the people claiming it lacks heart, emotion or humor, the audience sure didn't think that. Lots of claps too and it's showing in the BO

The tale of two movies I say haha.

Well its not making pure profit now since they only get about half from domestic take and even less from international.

If you do the math correctly, the film has to make over $411 million to start making a profit and the split is a little different with the WB since they own the distribution rights to most of its films (both foreign and domestic).

#ManOfSteel had super slim SAT-SUN drop of 0.07% thx to Fathers Day love. Revised wknd $116.7M, $128.7M since THU.
That makes me feel GREAT!
I saw it yesterday with a friend.
Glad we made a difference .
Great Movie.

So.....does it tie with the original Spider-Man for biggest non-sequel superhero movie opening now?

When do Sundays BO Totals get released?

116m puts it ahead of Spider Mans opening, also puts it ahead of TS3, and Alice in Wonderland. the 128m puts it bigger than Shrek 2 and Iron Man 2. All I can say is this is great news and shows that WOM is huge. I think this will carry over into next week. Even with a 50-55% drop the movie should still do 55-65m and finish 2nd to MU. WWZ wont take the 2nd spot. WWZ is only tracking around 40-44m

That's weird. Some said the 3D is a waste of money because it's blurry.

MAN OF STEEL is the 2n dbiggest non sequel opening wise ever, behind the hunger games....which did 153m on opening so it wasn't even close. Spider-man and a slew of other films opening weekends adjust higher than MOS.

That said, great start and judging by all existing multipliers, word of mouth is excellent. 128m opening, hoping for a total over 350m in the USA and 1b WW.

To me, it was blurry. I thought it looked much bigger and grander and all-around better in IMAX 2D.

Really big here in the Philippines.

“Man of Steel” soars to the top of PH box office with P247-M in 5 days

Manila, June 17, 2013 – Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ “Man of Steel” has opened to a record-breaking P247-million in the Philippines, marking the all-time biggest June opening ever in the industry.
The announcement was made today by Francis Soliven, General Manager of Warner Bros. (F.E.), Inc. which distributed the film.
“We’re thrilled at the tremendous response we’ve seen from audiences across the country to Zack Snyder’s exciting new vision of the iconic Super Hero,” said Soliven. “From internet presales to people lining up for theaters, `Man of Steel’ has proven to be the must-see film of the season.”
The new Superman movie shattered the record for highest June opening weekend in history previously held by “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” 2011.
“Man of Steel” also outgrossed 2011’s “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” to claim the best weekend launch ever for a Warner Bros. title.
Earlier Wednesday, June 12 the Henry Cavill-starrer established a new record for all-time biggest first-day gross with P69.52-M, eclipsing the milestone “Iron Man 3” reached last April with P62.9-M.

wow those decimals really make a difference.

If MOS is # 2 next week that would be something, amazing how each following week has a pretty substantial release.

I saw it in 3D, IMAX 3D and 2D. It was not the same movie in 2D. Still awesome but that 3D makes it better. One of the few times 3D actually worked for a movie. I bet on Blu ray you wont need the 3D though

What makes you think 1b ww?

650 intl

I agree. I first saw MOS in 2D because I have often found 3D distracting. However, when I did see MOS in 3D it made for a much better viewing experience. IDK, but everything, especially the action scenes seemed so much more clear and crisp. I do not think 2D does this film justice.

I'm really starting to think its a possibility this could hit a billion. I never thought so, and laughed at those who ever suggested it, but man how wrong I hope I was! If its as big in every Country as it's been in the US, Philippines, and UK so far, we have a good shot here! :)

650m In? Going to do more than that. At this point a 650 IN number would mean no more than 350 IN seeing Man of Steel will most likely hit around 300m domestically probably 340m. So still thinking 700-800m ww. 400-500m international.
