LOL...I taped it on VHS :cwink:

I think for DC cartoon fanatics it is hailed, but not so much in the GA :csad: which is a shame. I get on Timm sometimes for being such a Batman fanboy, but some of the things in he did were truly ground breaking. I always love that some of the characters he helped to create like Harley and Mercy are fan favorites and have crossed over.
Just on a story/film level, I thought it was terrific. And in terms of Bat-fandom, much better than what I felt was pretty poor with the Burton '89 movie.

I can't recall Over the Edge...was that BTAS or STAS?
Batman. Amazing episode.....

Shocking that they would go for something as mature as they did with it.

"Buddy" is the wrong wrong. I like when they are at odds and challenge each others points of view. I meant buddy like team up. Whenever they team up I really like it...if it's done well.
Oh I know, but I'd really not want a team up until perhaps the very end....or maybe not at all when Batman somehow defeats Superman, but not how it seems, or the like.

I think Batman/Bruce is one of the few people people who really get Superman/Clark, but they have radically opposed way of going about things, but they fight for the same cause. That's what makes that "team up" exciting.
Yeah, the JL TAS did touch upon what Batman does at least appreciate in Superman, even if he doesn't express it. And in a lot of ways, Batman needs to be more of a downer/darker outlook for the sake of balance when working together. But it's also funny how their egos kind of come out as well, and the TAS W.F. did that brilliantly.

But again, I like the idea of really turning the ideologies of being a superhero inside out with the two.

I also had a story idea that was an expansion of the Superman episode where Lois goes to an alternate timeline where she had died and the world had become more of a totalitarianism with Luthor as the leader and Superman his strongarm in black. Something a lot darker in which Lois also runs into a man with mechanical prosthetics and horrible scarring who operates hidden underground...and it's Batman who suffered injuries at the hands of Superman as a 'warning'.

He first convinces her that he wants to save him with Lois' help, but it turns out what he really wants to do is use Lois to get close to Supes again and kill him, and at the end he uses Kryptonite or whatever to weaken and beat him nearly to death. But Lois intervenes, and Superman vaporizes Batman with his heat vision....to the absolute horror of Lois.

And that's when Superman finally realizes that things have gone terribly wrong, and almost killed Luthor, but decides to make changes. At the end, he's in tears and begs Lois not to return to her real timeline, telling her that he loves her, and that he can't live or function without her. But she replies that's exactly why she needs to go...that he needs to go on without her because what he stands for is bigger than them and needs to shine through to really mean something.

Man...it would have been really bold for the Timm/Dini team to go for something like that.

Timm was groundbreaking, but you know what? I know I have seen that episode, but I be dammmed because I cannot remember a thing about it. I own all of STAS, but BTAS was not my favorite. I preferred the older version. Thanks for posting that! I'm going to watch it again. :yay:

I'm a little easier to please...lol. I like how they did it in STAS WF. Basically they are looking for the same thing and end up teaming up by default because they end up being in the same place. Of course, they don't like each other, but they learn to understand one another and at the end really respect the other. I'm one for KISS in CBMs.

One of the few Batman comics I really like is HUSH. I do not like all of it and cannot even remember the end, but there is one part where Batman really goes into detail about Superman/Clark...because they are battling. It's awesome!

lol...that's DCAU territory. Way too deep for either of those shows. Another reason I really love STAS was able to stay in the realm that is appropriate for children. I love the fact many of the younger adults I know came to Superman via this show. If it was too dark for Saturday morning fare then they would have never seen it as children.

Been meaning to check it out, but I don't really read many comics.

Yeah, really not for that show and its intended audience...but they did push things as far as they could, and that could have been a great expansion of that. It was already a pretty risqué concept for an episode to begin with.

But that's why something like 'Over The Edge' was such an eye-opener.

Brave New Metropolis is my favorite STAS episode of all time. I once got to ask Timm on a MB a long time ago if they had ever thought of doing a follow up for that episode. He said no...and I was bummed for life...lol

I still love that episode.

They really should have stretched it out over two or three, though. So much juicier stuff to draw from inside of that.

By the way, I like your avvy...like some abstract artist's work titles 'Superman'.

AGREED! I even hoped we might get some of that action in JL, but nope. Heck I wouldn't even mind them expanding on that story today.

It's a Dini or Burnett's pick on Superman Elite blu ray verions, but the tranfer blows

I think it's one of the big challenges to not get too caught up in 'elseworlds' and the like when your main duty is to keep the 'status quo' continuity going. Alternate universes and the like will always be a fresh departure by nature, but you have to be careful that you're not admitting that the main deal has gotten stale or unimaginative without inserting major shifts and such. Also, if something is and 'alternate', it's also too easy to have that 'safety net' of it not really happening...whereas really bold moves in a 'canon' put a lot more of an onus on the world to take ownership and risks.

I think everyone's got an elseworlds in them for any character they like...the really hard thing is sticking with it like you're raising a child indefinitely, and really being held accountable for the character's actual history that you're writing.

I agree with this, but I always was curious about that Superman. He was the compelling Superman in that story so I just wanted more of that Superman. lol...I never really expected it, but it has always been my hope.

In fact the more we talk about that episode the more I think I would like DCAU to adapt Red Son.

I think as a story itself, it should have been further developed. Like Red Son shouldn't just be one regular-sized issue. But then, maybe they had concerns of someone tuning in and getting confused if too much time was spent on it, who knows? You can't get 'too adult' with this stuff in that setting.

I always wished that Batman/Superman could be handled by an anime company...and the kind of money/time and 'mature' emphasis could be spent on it like it is for some of the high-end Japanese stuff.

But at a certain point...you can't put out too much of the 'special flavors' of Coke...if it's going to make regular Coke seem too bland and less refreshing, if that volume is what your bread and butter is all about.

Elseworlds are fun and usually distinguishable from the regular lines. Comics are a niche thing anyway so those who read them can easily tell them apart...sometimes.

I think what they are doing in the DCAU is as far as it will go, but I agree with you. I have always wanted a super-adult Superman in anime. Cursing, nudity and all, but that's stuff like taboo in the Superman world except for porn parody.

For comic fans, yeah...but for something that's meant for a broader and overall younger audience, they have to keep'em rather more seldom. In a lot of ways, Nolan's Batman films walk a thin line between presenting something very 'elseworlds' and more canon. But with a TV cartoon, there's probably less leeway. But they did push it quite a bit, though with the TAS...probably a bit moreso than WB was aware of. :O

But I don't really think a more ;adult' or mature/expanded animated version needs cursing and nudity...or even more gore or violence. Just the scope and maturity of the storytelling that a more tight-budgeted child-geared program can't do. How something like Akira opened a lot of people's eyes to what anime could be like, and tons of more (to the West) unknown recent pieces can do...when it's basically THE film industry of that country.

More I think about it the more I can see the ending been the elevator scene. I reckon we might see that bit where Clark puts on his glasses elevator closes then the title Man of Steel end credits. I'd actually be down with that ending.

Yeah, maybe. He looks to be wearing the same clothes as in the bike-sequence though and I just cant see him walking around like that without glasses at the end at the movie.

It would make a great closing shot with the closing elevator.

I've said since Comic-Con it's either that or the sonic booms.

But if he's walking around on the street before he gets his glasses ppl probably wouldn't recognise him think how many faces u see in a day you don't remember all of them and for all we know the people of Metropolis will even see his face clearly.

Clark steps into the streets of Metropolis, a large shadow covers the city. People start running in a stampede away from what they see. Clark turns to see a large alien ship hovering over Metropolis.

Clark: "Mother F-"

THE MAN OF STEEL

Well, I'm definitely looking forward to see how they handle that as well as many other similar issued angles.

It would be cool if the ending is his first day on the job at the DP.
Clark enters the elevator, puts on the glasses, goes up the elevator, the door opens and we hear P.W. shouting'' Wheres that new guy, Kent whats his name??'' then jimmy olsen pops up and introduces himself to Clark.

Yeah, I agree, but we kinda know where it goes, that's why the closing elevator-door would be a great last shot. The rest is history sort of, only it's not in this version.

As someone has pointed at previously, there is a photo of what is said to be Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, and Lawrence Fishburn filming a scene behind the Hyatt hotel next to a cab and with papers all around. You only see the back of what is supposed to be Cavill but he's wearing Clark Kent attire. Work clothes and a briefcase. You don't see his face so you can't tell if he's wearing glasses. But if he's interracting with them here then he has already met them. That's why I think the elevator scene might not be the last scene. It may simply be his first day in Metropolis.

I don't think an elevator closing is epic enough for a last shot.

It isn't. I want a flying shot for the last shot. Like Spidey's final swing.
