Marvel Heroes Column: Why You Should Give Marvel Heroes Another Look

on January 15, 2014

When we gave Marvel Heroes a 5.6 in our review last June, the game most certainly deserved it. In fact, when I first saw MH at a game convention around six months before launch, I thought it looked terrible. I eventually got a chance to play in the beta and the game was definitely rough, but I could see the potential as it improved towards launch. Still, those improvements weren’t enough, and the game launched a hot mess.

Quickly, Gazillion endeavored to improve on the game and spent no time trying to gloss over its flaws. Instead, the team looked to tap directly into player feedback in guiding the changes needed to be made going forward. The game did improve some over the first few months, but it wasn’t until Gazillion brought on former Blizzard developer Jeff “Doomsaw” Donais that a clear vision had been set and truly appreciable changes began to roll in at a seemingly breakneck pace. Since then, Doomsaw and his team have done an excellent job taking advantage of feedback from the community. The team engages with the players frequently on the forums in discussions to improve individual characters and even the game as a whole.

I’ve been playing the game on and off since launch and as someone working in community I really have to commend Gazillion on having a finger on the pulse of their player community. This has been most apparent in the great deal of care that has been put into the ongoing process of making each and every character balanced and fun to play. This began with a series of character reworks and then a whole new set of level 52 reworks. Initially, characters were designed with a power progression through level 30, but these latest reworks have added additional power progression through level 52 (out of 60). While the reworks have been coming at a pretty solid clip, Gazillion made the decision late last year to halt them temporarily in an effort to balance the damage across all characters to ensure players didn’t have to wait until their favorite character's rework was on deck to begin enjoying them. If you haven’t played since launch, there’s a very good chance that your favorite character is a lot more viable now, if not reworked altogether.

While simultaneously improving elements of the existing game, Gazillion has also added quite a few new characters, features, game modes, and item types since launch. New characters include: Gambit, Emma Frost, Human Torch, Luke Cage, Squirrel Girl, Ghost Rider, and even the game’s first playable villain, Loki. Loki arrived with the introduction of update 2.0, which added a ninth chapter to the game’s story content, tying into the events of Marvel’s latest Thor film, Thor: The Dark World. Naturally, this content takes place in Asgard, and Gazillion has been adding to the Asgard content available every month since its introduction, with plans to add the game’s first raid to Asgard in the near future.

Endgame has improved significantly, too. There are multiple new modes, including: X-Defense (endless survival, with scaling rewards in experience and loot chance), Midtown Manhattan (a large open zone with continually cycling dynamic events and boss fights), and soon to come, the Danger Room. Even the basic story content has been upgraded with new Heroic and Superheroic difficulty modes.

As for items, Gazillion has added Unique items for each character (in addition to character agnostic Uniques), Team Insignias (aura granting items), rings, new and improved Artifacts, Relics (think Badass ranks from Borderlands 2), and most recently, Legendary items. Legendary items gain experience as you do combat with them equipped to your hero, eventually ranking up over five ranks and unlocking additional benefits along the way. Going forward, Gazillion plans to bring back Runewords from Diablo II and add a new StarkTech item type that will grow in strength as players donate items to it.
A 5v5 PvP mode called “Fire & Ice” was also added late last year, but I honestly wouldn’t advise anyone to check Marvel Heroes out at this time for the PvP alone. The mode is in beta at this point and is quite unbalanced. From what I understand, Gazillion is committed to balancing the mode and officially releasing it in the near future, but it’s just not there yet.

One of the major concerns at launch was Gazillion’s approach to monetizing the game. The game wasn’t Pay-to-Win, but gamers balked at the prices Gazillion were charging for new characters and costumes. While it was technically possible to acquire new characters and costumes through simple gameplay, the token system originally used just didn’t feel practical to most players. Since then, character prices have generally been reduced across the board and Gazillion has implemented a new Eternity Splinters currency that can be used to unlock characters, Ultimate Power upgrade tokens, Retcons (respecs), and more.

Eternity Splinters drop at a regular interval as players play the game and it really doesn’t take a whole lot of time to earn enough of them to add a new character to your playable roster. You can even spend a smaller amount of Splinters to purchase a box granting a random hero reward. If RNG is in your favor, you can end up unlocking a 600 Splinter hero for a paltry 175 Splinters. Eternity Splinters give players options instead of forcing them to hope and pray for their favorite character to drop if they don’t have the cash (or aren’t willing to spend it) on unlocking a new character. That said, you may still get a bit of sticker shock with some of the costume prices, but Gazillion has essentially positioned costumes as a primary revenue source and the studio has to make money somehow. In my opinion, it’s a fair trade off for what is almost entirely a cosmetic feature.

Ultimately, Marvel Heroes is a much better game today than it was at launch and it looks like players have been rewarding Gazillion for their efforts to improve it. Marvel Heroes doesn’t feel like a game treading water, consigned to its fate by a disastrous launch. Instead, it’s a game that is growing in a meaningful way all the time, with developers who truly seem to care about providing their players with solid service and a receptive ear to constructive feedback. If you found yourself underwhelmed by the launch product, or stayed away due to what you heard from friends either about the state of the game or its monetization model, I would encourage you to give it another look.
You can find Marvel Heroes free-to-play on Steam. For a peek at the game’s 2014 hero (and villain) lineup, check out the Marvel Heroes Advance Packs.

Consolidated Updates from the Forum AMA + Twitch Livestream [24/01/2014]

njferns

Cutting EdgeLocationMumbai, IndiaAmazing

January 24
Today @Ryolnir & @TheArtofRawr held a Developer Livestream on Twitch (http://www.twitch.tv/marvelheroes), where they graciously showed off Nightcrawler, the newly reviewed Cap & Hawkeye (& we saw Kate Bishop run around as well). PLUS the first reveals for Fear Itself Wolverine & the highly awaited Lady Loki. Brilliant job done on BOTH costumes that look absolutely smashing & kudos to @TheDink for her work on Lady Loki which is top-notch as always. (I would like to know though who was responsible for the equally great work done on Fear Itself Wolvie.)
This image has been resized to fit in the page. Click to enlarge.
But before the Twitch event actually happened, Ryolnir decided to "keep us entertained" (read: distract us from whining & moaning about the servers being down ) with an AMA (http://forums.marvelheroes.com/discussion/61377/ask-gazillion-anything/p1). So since the servers are still down I figured I could consolidate all the updates from the forum AMA AND the Twitch livestream into one single post for your reading pleasure while you'll wait. Special mention to@KingBacon for keeping us entertained with his humorous antics in the AMA & thanks to @Doomsawfor popping in the AMA & Livestream too. Of course a BIG THANKS to Ryolnir for conducting both & trying to answer as many questions as he could from the barrage of queries. In case I've missed out on anything feel free to comment & I'll add it in with your credit.
New Heroes

  • Choice for the final 2 heroes in the Advance packs is between Rogue (very likely), Mr. Fantastic, Blade & 1-2 possible others.
  • Moon Knight comes after Nightcrawler. He will be mostly based on Charlie Huston's Moon Knight & before (with a touch of Vengeance of the Moon Knight.) He has plenty of ranged & melee skills & the Moon Copter/Angelwing will be present.
  • Doctor Strange is currently in design phase on track for his March release. He has many spells & some nifty Astral Form stuff planned.
  • Star Lord power trees: Element Guns, Ship, TBD.
  • Psylocke is in design phase.
  • X-23 & Beast progress as side projects when there is downtime, which is rare, but occasionally happens.
  • Blade will definitely be in 2015, if not 2014. But more likely 2015.
  • Magneto, Venom & Juggernaut- Second half of 2014. There is a very specific story chapter that needs to finish before these releases. (They also have something in mind for Agent Venom.)
  • Silver Surfer will likely be released close to Starlord's August release.
  • Nova & Invisible Woman - Mid 2014.
  • Iceman- (Maybe early) 2015
  • Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew)- May come out in 2015.
  • Elektra & War Machine will eventually be playable heroes but timing is TBD.
  • There are serious limitations for super-speed heroes like Quicksilver & Northstar, which is why they could probably never make them as playable.
  • Kaine Spiderman will most likely not be playable in the game.
  • Penance could be a likely candidate for 2016.
Hero Improvements

  • Scarlet Witch's review will most likely be in April or so.
  • Black Widow's review will be in February.
  • They are working on a number of changes for Gambit. His running animation will also be changed.
  • In his review Daredevil will receive something similar to combo points & will have improved AOE/trash killing' abilities. [Thanks @Skaughtto ]
  • They will be adjusting tenacity soon. 2 things need to be fixed: the tooltips & overall balancing/amounts/ratios.
  • Team-up characters will begin to be released in the next few months.
  • Possible to see Arachne (Julia Carpenter), Deathlok as a team up or similar someday.
  • Likely you will be able to donate gear to team ups (sidekicks) to upgrade their stats.
  • Dual spec for heroes will be coming latest by the first half of this year.
Missions

  • Raid on TC - Probably in 1-2 months. Rewards for raids hasn't been decided yet, but will possibly include some combination of:
-Tokens that let you upgrade the item level of items (increasing the white numbers and affixes slightly).
-A few rare runewords.
-Uniques items & artifacts (or advanced versions of current)
-Higher chance of "any hero" uniques.
-Achievements.

  • There will be a recipe for Bovineheim.
  • More terminals are in the works. Bullseye terminal seems likely.
  • Hardcore mode is often discussed, but never locked down.
  • An Ultron multiphase boss is being planned.
Items

  • Uru forged item drops will be pretty rare in this patch since they're a preview - more common in the future (but never common).
-Note that the base items themselves are pretty vanilla (similar to socketed items with some key design differences), it's the runewords themselves that are more interesting. The Uru-Forged Items themselves are vessels than can be enchanted with runewords.
-They come in 6 flavors: War Belt, War Ballista, War Axe, War Gauntlets, War Helm & War Plate (Those are the high-level version names)
-Here are some sample runeword names:
2-Rune Runewords: Shield Wall Bowazon Blood Barrage Fire Barrage Valkerie's Legacy
3-Rune Runewords: Ritual Spiritfire Ancient Grove Bone Breaker
4-Rune Runewords: Heroes of Asgard Demonic Savagery Gladiator Viking's Vitality Lunar Eclipse
5-Rune Runewords: Surtur's Volcanic Soul Beast Master Breath of the Dying Enigma Ultimate Guardian God of Thunder God of Mischief
  • Most runes will have 1 affix, the basic design is that they are one per item, but there may be more advanced recipes.
-Runes will be able to enchant slot 1-5.
-Gear slot 1-5 can only have 1 rune.

  • StarkTech should be in test by late February/early March & live in March.
  • Relic auto stacking is coming.
  • More STASH tabs likely available for purchase by March.
  • They are planning a medallion/artifact pass.
  • No new blessings planned right now.
Costumes

  • Phoenix 5 Emma Frost coming next week! She will probably be 950G as she has no flames or voice modulation.
  • Jean Grey's All New X-Men costume is finished & on the schedule. Her Here Comes Tomorrow costume is also likely to be done at some point.
  • Black Widow has a new costume waiting to be released. Doomsaw has since teased what the costume would be based on here: https://forums.marvelheroes.com/discussion/61570/server-update-keeping-the-data-secure/p1
  • Thor's Future King costume will be the next costume released for him.
  • Shuri enhanced costume for Black Panther confirmed.
  • American Dream costume for Captain America is still in the works.
  • Indestructible, Fear Itself & Joe Fixit (Madripoor) costumes are all on the list for Hulk with the Indestructible one coming first.
  • Patch Wolverine, , Dark X-men Emma Frost, Iron Spiderman, Rune King Thor, Ultimate Thor, Ms. Thing (FF), 2099 costumes are definitely on their list.
  • Cyclops & Wolverine Age of Apocalypse costumes, Age of X & X-Treme costumes will happen.
  • Rocket Raccoon's Timely Inc costume- Highly desired by Gaz but there have been certain licensing issues with it in the past. They could probably resolve it by making the costume & calling it something else, therefore avoiding the Timely Inc. name which is a separate company.
  • Fear Itself Wolverine is in the pipeline now!
This image has been resized to fit in the page. Click to enlarge.
  • Gambit as Death will be in the works soon & will be for the normal enhanced price on release.
  • Bearded Punisher is the next Punisher costume in the pipeline but he has a lot of heroes in front of him. Rachel Cole-Alves costume is 90% coming for him.
Misc

  • Active players have been growing fairly aggressively since the Thor movie.
  • An official update on Mac compatability is coming in 2 weeks.
  • They are considering a companion app for mobile but their focus is still to add more great stuff to the main game first.
  • Havok will replace Nightcrawler as the Xavier School NPC. Longshot is likely to replace Domino as the Fortune Card NPC after Domino's release.
  • They don't ahve a specific goal for he number of heroes they want to cap at. They may slow down at 100, but have loads they really want to do before then.
  • Brian Bendis has only written the storyline up to Doom.

Marvel Heroes Column: Developers Answer a Ton of Questions

on January 25, 2014, Gazillion brought down the Marvel Heroes game in order to apply content update 2.14. The downtime for the patch was extended for several hours, during which time Doomsaw, Ryolnir, and a number of Gazillion developers participated in a marathon “Ask Gazillion Anything” session. Several hours, eighty-plus pages of posts, and hundreds of questions later, we learned a lot of interesting things regarding the present and near future for Marvel Heroes.

1. New Heroes on the horizon
This isn’t terribly surprising, Gazillion has added a number of heroes to the game since launch (Emma Frost, Like Cage, Gambit, Ghost Rider, and Squirrel Girl for example) and they currently have Nightcrawler up on the Test Center ready for launch in the imminent future. On deck is Moon Knight and Doctor Strange, each likely to come out this spring. From there, we can expect Silver Surfer and Starlord, with Blade and Ice-Man referenced as a late 2014 or early 2015 addition.
Marvel1_t.jpg

2. Playable Villains on the horizon
The addition of Loki as a playable character with Chapter 9, opened the door for a host of other playable villains. Venom, Juggernaut, and Magneto were each referenced in the question and answer section. Magneto, in particular, will come following a storyline addition to the game clarifying why he’s available to assist S.H.I.E.L.D. The developers also mentioned that villain Magneto would have a specific line of dialog that would come up when he comes into battle with player-character Magneto.
Marvel2_t.jpg

3. More Enhanced Costumes
Enhanced costumes for a hero provide a new look and a completely different dialog bank. Recently, Gazillion has begun using these enhanced costumes to broaden out the hero choices by adding in other Marvel denizens who have temporarily acted as that hero. For example, the Beta Ray Bill enhanced Thor costume allows you to turn Thor into Beta Ray Bill. Hawkeye will be getting a Hope Bishop costume very soon, allowing fans of the Young Avenger to play her instead of Clint Barton. Similar work is afoot to bring in Shuri, the Black Panther’s sister and American Dream, a female take on Captain America. These gender swap costumes have been pretty popular, I know the Kate Bishop one is going to be an immediate for us, both my wife and daughter were happy to see that addition.
Marvel3_t.jpg

4. The Raid Zone
A number of references were made regarding the raid zone in development, although details here are far more sketchy at this time. There seems to be a lot of excitement around the first two bosses of the raid zone, but we don’t yet know who they will be. There were some reveals regarding loot in the raid. It appears that a new form of token or currency will be added which enables players to raise the item-level of gear in the game. Unique gear and artifacts should be part of the reward system. Achievements were also referenced.
Marvel4_t.jpg

5. New Gear Slots
The teaser for Nightcrawler a few weeks back made it clear that Uru-forged gear is coming soon. We learned a bit more about that today. This will be a new gear slot and has the potential to add blessings to several existing gear slots. Additional discussion touched on forthcoming StarkTech gear, possibly adding another slot of gear to your hero’s inventory.
6. In-Game Population is Growing
Specifically, since the game population has grown steadily since the Thor 2 movie. Doomsaw noted that, with the game now incorporating many of the play-features they have in mind (eternity shards, Midtown Manhattan, X-Defense, Legendary Quests, Asgard, etc.), Gazillion is beginning to promote the title more actively.
Marvel5_t.jpg

There was a lot of additional discussion. Quality of life features like auto-stacking relics, an overhaul of the supergroup (guild) system, and a number of other important topics were addressed (apparently Frito’s is highly recommended on pizza?). Overall it was a very informative day and there are lots of things to be excited about if you are a fan of the Marvel Universe!

First Two New Designers Hired

Doomsaw

GazillionLocationdefending the Racoon'iverseStaff

January 29
Hi all,
In December I posted this announcement that we were hiring more people for the team:https://forums.marvelheroes.com/dis...ing-experience-join-the-gazillion-team#latest
We got over 100 applicants and sent design tests to about 50 of the top applicants. After many interviews and tests, we narrowed the search down to a few top applicants.
We've hired our first two additions to the team, which will help in various these areas:

  • Updating existing heroes
  • Review game systems. (We like to review everything from enemies, damage, defense, TTK, TTL, powers tuning, playability, fun, etc)
  • Assist with item additions and item reviews.
  • Assist with level 52 reviews (and work with the community to gather and process feedback from everyone).
  • Work to identify and prioritize the biggest quality of life improvements for every hero.
  • Work on the pvp system and upcoming raid system (along with various tuners)
As you can guess, with us coming up on 30 playable classes, many modes and a ton of items and systems, we always have more on our "to do" list than we can finish in a month. These new team members will help a ton with that.
So, please welcome @Psilocke and @Amthua as the next two additions to the team.
Along with @MichaelMayhem, this will be the 3rd designer that we hired straight from the community.-
Welcome guys!
And to everyone who applied, thank you very much and stay in touch because we aren't done yet.

Hey guys,
With the release of Moon Knight, we're considering releasing a 'Marvel Knights' insignia to broaden the horizons a bit!
This would be a pretty broad use of the "non-team" name and might consist of the street-level heroes we add to our game, even if they weren't technically on Daredevil's unnamed team (for instance, if we added Iron Fist, he might be given the affiliation due to his constant team ups with this crew!)
Off the top of my head, the current "obvious" members would be: Daredevil, Moon Knight, Punisher, Luke Cage, and Black Widow.
Now onto the contest...
Design an insignia for a Marvel Knights member! A good place to start is the official Marvel page here: http://marvel.com/universe/Marvel_Knights
Here's a (kinda boring) example of what one could be...
Insignia of Punisher
War Zone Aura:
You and nearby allies have a X% chance to cause nearby enemies to cower after defeating an enemy.
The winner of this contest will have their insignia put into the game!

Mr. Fantastic still not in the game yet? :(

there was a vote with him, Rogue, blade and war machine he wasn't doing well compared to Blade and Rogue.
here it is
https://forums.marvelheroes.com/discussion/49547/heroes-for-2014-vote-here#latest

and I have a list of planned characters since before that vote happened.

here's a list of the Due dates characters are supposedly due to come out.

and keep in mind that these dates a subject to change.

  • @Doomsaw confirms Dr. Strange is one of the next five heroes to be releasedhttps://forums.marvelheroes.com/discussion/38296/next-5-heroes-confirmed-by-doomsaw/p1
  • I am inferring that Dr. Strange will fall under the same price tier as Loki, as @Doomsaw states this is where "most" heroes will behttps://forums.marvelheroes.com/discussion/comment/487512/#Comment_487512
  • I am inferring that Dr. Strange will be released ~3-4 weeks after Moon Knight. Dr. Strange is the most difficult release date I've tried to predict, a) since he's so far out and who knows what the game will look like next March, and b) his kit could require drastic new coding/development or very little. His power set is more complex than a lot of the Heroes released so far (ie: the brawlers, ex: Luke Cage, Moon Knight, etc.), but a lot of his potential powers could use existing tech from other heroes (Scarlet Witch, Loki, Emma Frost, Jean Grey, etc.). That said, his development may or may not require an additional week from the release of the previous hero. Furthermore, if I had to guess, I would imagine The Sorcerer Supreme would cost 400 ES, since Loki is such a similar character in terms of kit. Dr. Strange also does not have any upcoming movie tie-ins or other-media promotions, so I would not expect him to merit a 600ES price tag that the more popular heroes have (Spider-Man, Iron-Man, Deadpool). However, it will be interesting to see how much G he costs, if he does end up a 400 ES hero. I would again go with my gut and say he will be 900G like Loki

  • I have been unable to track down further information on X-23's release date apart from the fact that @Doomsaw namedropped her when talking about hero prices. It sounds like her kit will be simple (ie: similar to Wolverine's), so we might be seeing her sooner than we think. Community members have voiced there concerns about X-23 being too similar to Wolverine due to character/personality differences. Depending on how Gaz takes this feedback, her kit might become more complex/new and her price may be bumped.
MAGIK

  • 400 ES
Sources

  • @Doomsaw states that Magik will be playable in the future.https://forums.marvelheroes.com/discussion/comment/507637/#Comment_507637
  • If i had to guess, I would imagine Magik would be a 400ES hero, like most of the new ones will be. Her stepping disc powers will not be difficult since there are so many teleporting powers in game already, there are summonable demons in-game already, and she has some animations in Colossus' new summon ability. I would not expect significant design work required such that she would cost 600ES.
and

UPCOMING HEROES (CONTINUED)

MR. FANTASTIC

Tentative Release Date

  • 2014

  • @Doomsaw talks about the potential difficulties of Mr. Fantastic depending on "how they do him", which makes it sound like he is confirmed.https://forums.marvelheroes.com/discussion/comment/466816/#Comment_4668162
  • I see Reed pricing similar to Emma. He doesn't quite have the popularity to demand top dollar like Iron Man and Spider Man, but he was part of the flagship Marvel team in its advent years. 1100G sounds right to me, but I wouldn't be outrageously surprised if it gets bumped up to 1450G/600ES. He will probably be 900G now that Brevik as confirmed the elimination of the 1100G price tier.

ROGUE

  • 2014

  • 1350G
  • 600 ES
Sources

  • @Doomsaw discusses the potential difficulties of Rogue depending on how they set her up.https://forums.marvelheroes.com/discussion/comment/466816/#Comment_466816
  • Based on @Doomsaw's feedback, Rogue sounds like she will require extensive design work. Her ability to absorb any metahuman's powers will likely require a lot of new coding, and as such she will probably cost top dollar. Like her on-again-off-again love interest Mr. Lebeau, she probably has the popularity to go for 1450G/600ES. However, now that Gambit will cost 900G/400ES, she might end up going for cheaper...
PSYLOCKE

Tentative Release Date

  • 2014
Tentative Availability

  • 900G
  • 400 ES
Sources
@GreenArmadillo said: Doomsaw confirmed for me on Twitter that Psylocke will make it "next year".

  • I would imagine Psylocke will be a 900G hero upon release. Her power set (psyblade attacks/martial arts, telepathy/telekinesis) are not anything that suggest new and unique design work.

Just makes me want to cry for Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3.
well how long ago was that? if it was some months ago like just after launch
alot has changed since you last played then and they did a lot of revisions.

and you have a long wait for Ultimate alliance 3 cause marvel has cut ties with Activison over what they did to them on dead pool.

Ok Details from this live stream

Announcements
1. Hawkeye Fear Itself costume
2. Gambit Forever City costume
3. Howard the Duck pet with voiceover
4. Mac client will be announced soon, testing within a week or two after, launch likely next month or so
5. "Sometime this year we'll have a release that will pay homage [to a published story arch]"
6. Moonknight is coming this month.
7. Moonknight's focus will be gadgetry (crescent darts, staff, truncheon, spiked gauntlets)
8. Moonknight will have Khonsu tributes. He will be the first character to have two skills with an anti-requisite, meaning you may only choose 1 of 2 powers. One is an cooldown AOE taunt that causes him to take more damage but cannot die for the duration. The other is a cooldown that removes the spirit cost of all powers for the duration, but then decreases his spirit to 0.
9. Moonknight does more damage when he depletes his spirit
10. Moonknight will crit more when he takes damage
11. Moonknight's second costume is the black Secret Avengers costume
12. Marvel Knights Team Insignias will be added
13. Buff indicators will come when raids come out. They'll be selective.
14. Bronx Zoo will have the Lizard, Mr. Hyde and "maybe" Kraven
15. PvP will soon be out of beta

Insights
* No chance for a fortune card character
* Storm always flying isn't coming any time soon, and doesn't seem likely
* Ghost Rider has been the best received character
* Enemy affixes will become more diverse/meaningful
* Starktech items are still coming, same donation mechanic but "the implementation might change"
* Team-ups will be earned through different ways. Not obtainable through purchased heroes (i.e. Spider-man the hero doesn't unlock Spider-man the team-up)

And an article

Aw that's a shame. Still, you'd figure even being on the list would be incentive enough.

Don't worry it is . Most of the peeps on the forum asked for him and there are alot of characters that are asked for Especially psylocke. One poster went over board with and is know as a nut cause of the way he went about it. he took entitlement to a new level there.

they know people want a complete set of the FF. but there some people that want some other characters more and it also depends on how far along the dev's are with some certain characters too. Any way as I said Sue is in the current advance pack. we'll have 3rd FF member soon enough.

Doomsaw's AMA recap! DD's New Costume! Dr. Strange (hopefully) on March 28th!

6:22PM
Hey guys. I was thinking that a thread like this to put all of Doomsaw's answers and discuss them would be a good idea. I will try and keep this updated between games of ARAM/Ranked and rounds of X-Def, so if you see one I missed please reply/message me and I will update it as frequently as time allows. Enjoy!
Daredevil's new costume spoil!:
OK, got permission to tease this:
http://marvel.wikia.com/Daredevil_Noir_Vol_1_2
Extra pricture from Fiendsly:https://forums.marvelheroes.com/discussion/comment/870391/#Comment_870391
Dr. Strange Release Date and more!:
Dr. Strange will release on March 28th according to the current schedule, but we could keep him a week longer on test center if we find anything that we want to improve.
The way we have new heroes set up, we can easily move around the dates to iterate more if needed.
Dr. Strange should be a really fun ranged hero with some impressive visuals and a fairly unique feel to his gameplay. I will definitely be leveling him to 60.
On Magik and Red Hulk LETS GO MAGIK IN 2014!!!
Totally 100% agree on both.
Magik will definitely be released one day and already has some work done.
Red Hulk will either be playable or an enhanced Hulk costume. We are 50/50 on that.
On Odin Marks, Relics, and Runes:
Doomsaw: Relics and runes will auto-stack next patch and you will be able to split them.
Odin Marks will only drop from Legendary Quests and sometimes daily rewards.
We are looking at options to expand the Quest system to include an opt-in for other modes, but that is something for later in the year.
On Raid development progress:
The first raid is still in development in the following ways: The whitebox of the level is 90% done, but needs a few tweaks based on testing for distance of encounters, encounter flow, etc.
The environment art of the level will need a month or two of work, so each encounter looks good and the environment helps explain the mechanics of the fight. Several of the environment hazards are interesting and will need a lot of iteration so they can be quickly parsed.
The main raid boss is actually almost done, but many of the bosses leading up to him still need several months of work to be complete. This will be the critical path to completion.
Itemization still needs to be done, but that is not on the critical path and is relatively easy. A few new Runewords, several new uniques and artifacts. All of those should take less than 6 weeks to complete, start to finish.
The raid grouping system is complete, along with UI. It will require several weeks of testing, but won't hold anything up.
Tuning and balancing the encounters will likely take 8 weeks, since this is the most complicated content we've ever created. It's actually the first time an ARPG has done a serious, massive raid encounter so I expect it to be very fun and require a good amount of iteration before launch.
All told, I would expect another 16 weeks of work is likely needed, plus or minus 4 weeks in either direction.
On Silver Surfer and other future characters:
This is a good question.
I spent a lot of time rereading Silver Surfer and reviewing all the known information about him to make sure he could have a variety of powers and interesting mechanics.
Based on all of the things he's done over the years, I am sure we can make a balanced and fun hero out of him with several unique builds.
As for unreleased heroes: I am very excited about Rogue, Star-Lord, Juggernaut and Moon Knight + a few others I can't officially mention yet.
On Q2 Hero releases:
After Moon Knight and Dr. Strange, we are looking at some combination of Invisible Woman, Psylocke, Star Lord and 1-2 others.
On open slots in the character sheet (His own question to himself):
Team Ups for sure.
StarkTech for sure.
The other two are still up for discussion with many good ideas (visual artifacts, account-wide items, story items have all been discussed)
On Legendary Item switching:
Absolutely, since we did a huge DPS pass of the game and we are planning on having the players we recently hired spearhead a thorough item pass for the game, we think it's fair to allow people to trade in their Legendaries for a limited time.
This should start with the Moon Knight patch and last until a complete pass is done on items and attributes. After that, you won't be able to switch for free.
On story development with villians/anti-heroes releasing soon:
Yes, this is in the works for later this year as part of the natural progression.
BTW, we don't charge anything for expansions of story content, we use the League of Legends style business model where you buy costumes (and heroes), but the actual game modes are free.
On population growth and player retention:
Our player base has grown pretty crazily since the Thor movie and we've been growing the company to accomodate it. We've really ramped up the marketing (as you can tell if you watch anything on Twitch). The growth recently has been extremely aggressive and I think our weekly small patches and monthly large patches will help keep existing players interested.
We are working on one new system which is pretty cool that is an evolution of other games Weekly Challenges where the server is given a weekend challenge that is tracked in-game and on the web, with repurcussions if they succeed or fail.
Example: Galactus is invading earth, defeat his minions in these 5 zones over the weekend. If you succeed, the Earth rejoices and new vendors are added everywhere with cool stuff, if you fail, his minions now appear in Midtown, X-Defense and terminals to harass you during the week.
On Dazzler:
Since Valentine's Day is coming, let her know that Dazzler is someone we could do one day as a Team Up or even playable after we've done the top 50-100 heroes.
She actually has enough potential uses of her powers that she could be a full playable class assuming you design a unique mechanic for her.
On Legendary Sharing:
Legendary Quest sharing should be ready for live in a few weeks, we want to test it and get it perfect before it goes live, but it's a high priority.
Yes, Psylocke is Q2 and awesome.
On Starting Hero selection UI:
I saw this post also and was very surprised, the interface has huge arrows, a simple line of clear text and 9 heroes prominently displayed.
I could see someone who is very excited just clicking "Start" without reading anything, so maybe I'll add an "Are you sure?" confirmation.
On PoE/D3 expansions:
We are just going to keep releasing stuff every week and major patches every month.
If people want to take take off to play D3 expansion, they are more than welcome to, we will always be here and always putting out new stuff every week.
On Polaris and Magneto:
Yes, he is in Marvel movies and is much more well known.
We could definitely do Polaris one day as a playable hero since she is cool and we could easily give her a unique game mechanic.
On End Game content:
Yes, more and more end-game content is the lifeblood of a good game and we will never stop adding more and making existing stuff more fun.
We have about 6 modes/chapters/add-ons coming out this year alone that we've teased or are in early development on.
On turning down a redditor's marriage proposal (Gratz @Doomsaw):
I can't marry you because I'm engaged and getting married in Pennsylvania this year.
However, my fiance is a nurse and she will be working all weekend, so I'll group with you for Cosmics and X-Defense this weekend. Or better yet Midtown legendaries since I really need to get a legendary for Deadpool.
On Moon Knight's interaction with Khonshu artifacts and more (Dr. Strange/Relics):
Moon Knight will definitely benefit from the Knoshu artifacts in the game.
We are still talking about relic changes but don't have anything planned for this patch.
Doctor Strange does not summon minions much in the comics, so he won't be a summoner, but he has some interactions with mystical beings (all taken directly from comics and Marvel lore).
I will do a separate Team Up response since it's long and distinguised.
On Achievements:
Achievements are going throught the back-end engineering design as we speak.
The engineering team is creating an entirely new tracking system for it so it can be efficient and tracked on the web, in-game, etc.
I expect achievements to launch this year 100%. Exact month is TBD, but progress is made every day so it's sooner rather than later.
We are taking the best parts of the achievement systems we have played over the years. Something clean, easy-to-understand and rewarding.
We are giving each hero individual, flavorful achievements like "Emma Frost - Enslave Cyclops in the Mister Sinister Terminal" or "Hulk - Score a brutal strike on Wolverine in PVP for the killing blow".
We have a bunch of solo content in development from Chaos Terminals (randomized stuff like POE but more accessible), endless dungeons, the SHIELD Holo-Sim and a few things for next year that are still in Marvel discussions and based on storyline content they have launched over the years.
On new Daredevil costume:
I will see if Marvel has approved this so I can spoil it here (I REALLY want to).
reserved
On new Chapters:
Great question.
As you know, we have the Marvel MMO license for a very, very long time, so we are planning a long way into the future.
Each year, we would want to do something like this:
At least one new PVE mode for players the presents an interesting tactical challenge. (X-Defense, Danger Room, Midtown, Endless Dungeon, etc)
At least one or more raid encounters for players. We want to push the envelope of raids in action RPGs. It hasn't really been done before and least not on a grand level, so we are breaking new ground. I am personally excited to play a raid where I don't need X tanks, Y healers and Z DPS. Once our first raid is done, I can easily see two raids a year. At least one new story chapter that advances the storyline (this is planned out for quite a long time with some interesting twists and turns).
One PVP mode per year (with monthly ladders, tournaments, etc). Once we get 4-5 PVP modes per year we would likely not add many more but continue to add new features and options.
On group XP bonus:
50% if you are grouped, even if it's just 1 person.
We just added this toggle and we are testing how interesting it is.
Note that grouping with players is already good for Legendary Quest sharing, but we don't want to make it mandatory in the game since we want to support solo play as much as group play.
On Bronx Zoo and inventory spacing:
I will check out your stream later tonight.
Bronx Zoo was designed fairly recently, so it uses some new technology and is visually amazing. My favorite part is the huge aquarium and the Spider-Man villains which always have an ecclectic feel to them.
We are going to change the UI to allow for 20 more inventory spots (which should cover every relic and more) AND add some more inventory slots carried by your Team-Up.
On Norn Stones and other Legendaries:
Norn Stones could be better or worse after we do a pass on attributes, depending on who you are playing.
Hopefully they are better, but lots of details need to be worked out.
Regardless, we will let people trade in Legendaries for free for a time until the dust settles.
On Kid Omega and other future heroes/villians:
Perhaps someday, but low on the list. Maybe as a Team-Up?
Five villains (without a huge analysis) would be: Galactus, Thanos, Super-Skrull, Omega Red and ABSORBING MAN (complete with with a cool set of enviornments).
On PS/XBox ports:
Perhaps one day, we've been approached and had talks, but we are focusing on PC 100% right now, along with a small team for Mac integration

Last edited by a moderator:
On number of characters by game's end:
I think they game may last forever, since the dev team is very dedicated and very efficient + Marvel is really supportive + the backing of the company is very strong + the license is incredible.
So, at least 100+ Heroes and 200+ Team-Ups would be very easily forseeable.
Considering each hero is roughly equal to a class in other ARPGs, that is a huge amount of options for players.
On Psilocke missing Doomsaw at the office and stealing his lunch:
Going well, I am having pizza and looking at google docs.
Yes, you can steal my lunch.
Get back to work.
On cross promotion via movies/DVDs:
We have done this with a couple of movies already and will likely do it more in the future.
We get asked a lot about cross promotion and we are going to start ramping it up more and more.
On the Unstoppable Juggernaut!:
Juggernaut is planned to have a pretty unique momentum-based mechanic. It will require a lot of testing, but should be quite fun.
With Thing's design review, we'll see if we can make him even more unique as well.
On Dual Specs:
We will have a dual spec system coming up soon.
We haven't started dev work on a gear setup system, but we may think about it for the future as a slightly lower priority.
More on Legendary Quest sharing:
We have a few passes for tech and balance to do for LQ sharing, but it's one of the top ten priorities currently, so we'll work on it for later this month or early next month.
On Starktech release:
We have 3 really solid ideas for StarkTech right now, so we'll pick the most fun one and use the other 2 ideas for stuff down the line.
There are still in development process as we test various implementations, so likely Q2.
On Wasp:
2015 earliest, 2017 latest.
I really want to take on this challenge and I'm sure we will.
On SDCC this year:
Sounds good, maybe I'll host a MH get together!
On Doomsaw cloning himself:
I will ask Doomsaw 1 if we can reveal this, although Doomsaw 23 was recently incinerated for asking the same thing.
On playing as Doop for a challenge mode:
Sold.
On Kate Bishop 2.0, last two advance pack characters, and a enhanced costume pack:
Not a bad idea and I could see it happening one day in the future.
As soon as we are 100% sure we can make the tech work, we will finalize the last two advance pack heroes. That's all that we are waiting for.
Not a bad idea, I will pass this to the store guys, they are always getting creating with new packs and such. Check out the "couples packs" for valentine's day for some lols.
On PVP development:
Yes, we have PVP veterans within the company who has used and abused every PVP system available from DOTA to LOL to WOW to COD to D2.
I love PVP almost as much as PVE so I spent a lot of time grinding WOW PVP in the early days and even made Gladiator a couple of times in 2s and 5s, along with two seasons of gold in LOL (but never Plat since I'm a noob).
We have a lot more experience people than me in those areas, which is even more helpful and we definitely lock down abuses before launch and as soon as we see them.
And yep, we have lots of friends and coworkers in all the game companies I referenced above and have ourselves worked at a few of the companies listed at various stages in our careers.
On new chapter this year and any Thanos appearances:
I can say Yes to the first question only(New chapter this year). Cannot spoil anything else.
On Spider Woman and forthcoming discussion:
Jessica Drew is on long-term schedules and will start initial design at some point in the future.
You'll know because I'll start a Dev Feedback thread on the forums.
BTW, those threads are always read and are often open during initial design meetings of heroes right in the meeting room, so definitely take the time to submit your thoughts, after all we're making this game for you guys (and somewhat for Ryolnir).
On Supergroup member cap and other info:
The maximum is now 500.
I think it was in a patch note, but help files should be updated to reflect this.
We have a list of improvements for supergroups coming up this year along with UI, goals, shared challenges, etc.
On Moon Knight livestream:
Cool Moon Knight fact, he wears white because he would rather take a hit than dodge it.
On Nick Fury and his SHIELD summons:
Love it. Thanks for remembering.
Someday, but probably not someday soon.
On movie costumes for Rocket, Star-Lord, and Captain America:
Yes to all.
On level cap increase:
How would you feel if we did that?
On new story Chapter. Odinforce/Overcharge, Winter Soldier being playable, and 25% or more discounts:
I really want to tell you, but I cannot.
Unclear, but post in the hero feedback threads, they are the #1 best place to be sure many developers will read the feedback and will be archived forever.
Yes.
Very, very rarely and usually tied to bundles. We aren't made of credits.
On combining runes to go up in power (Like crafting materials) and labeling of runes other than credit value:
No thoughts on that.
Cool, we have discussed this.
On linking items in chat:
Yes, will smart limitations.
On achievements and rewards for achievements:
Achievements will be this year, sooner rather than later and will be tied to some rewards. More than your average game, but they won't drop best-in-slot gear. They will drop cosmetic stuff, credits, other currency, likely titles and perhaps some stuff in development.

and here's details on solo and Duo's content From the dev's in written Form.

There's no reason to be sad about this; my comment should definitely not be taken to mean we won't do (and continue to do) supergroup and raid-style content, it just means that we recognize that there is a part of the player population that will never do those things, and we want to make sure there are elements of the game that work well for them solo and as a duo.
Also, it should be noted that supergroups aren't created equal - some are tight-knit groups who play together all the time, others are more casual and are purely social, and every shade in between.

@SuOT said: If many players often play solo/duo is due, mainly, to the lack of benefits from grouping and that's also what moved some players to ask for a "solo MM" amongst other content, also because while soloing, its a drawback to encounter other players.
All in all, I'm stating that Gazillion takes the main part in whether the players play solo or not. Subtle changes like the bonus party XP would increase grouping, as sharing LQ's will do. Also, if they add more bonuses to party, players will party.
My experience and general observation of the metrics on this kind of thing both here and at other places has been is that you are right that the design of the game can influence this.
However, I would also say the evidence is pretty strong that although there is a chunk of any player population that will always prefer to play in groups, and a chunk of any player population that is negotiable about whether they play solo or in groups, there is also always a chunk of any player population that no matter what the benefit will almost always play solo or in a duo, and actively resents when they feel that a game is pushing them to play in a group.
I mean, even in Shadowbane, arguably the most solo-unfriendly MMO ever made, there were people who had guilds but still always solo'd.
Now, that middle group of "negotiables" is a group that I think ways should be found in the design to offer incentives to group. The fact is, one of the most reliable predictors of a stickyness (how long a player stays in a game) is how much they group.
Which is, in fact, one of the reasons why right now we are devoting such a high percentage of our internal resources towards raid content.
So, put simply, our approach could be stated simply as: Continue to iterate and design for ways to encourage players to group, but to still provide meaningful gameplay for those

I strongly support Supergroups and we have many new features of quality of life enhancements coming for supergroups.
Heretic is just a loner, which is also good to have since we want to support solo players as well as groups of players.
