I really enjoyed how boisterous and animated the Goblin King was. The effects work on him was outstanding and it took a lot of balls to feature the details of his face so unflinchingly.

I love his [BLACKOUT]final moments[/BLACKOUT].

Agreed, he was awesome

Haven't seen THE HOBBIT yet...watching the extended editions of LORD OF THE RINGS beforehand...but wanted to chime in about the Eagles.

Aside from the obvious plot convenience, I always figured the reason the Eagles didn't just deal with the situation was similar to the reason that it had to be just Frodo and Sam and no one else journeying to Mordor. The ring didn't want to be destroyed. The ring corrupted and essentially poisoned almost anyone who carried it for any amount of time. If the Eagles had picked up Frodo and Sam or just flown the thing into Mordor in an effort to drop it into Mount Doom, might the ring have corrupted them as it almost did Galadriel, etc?

I've read some people complain about the inclusion of the songs in the movie (one person at the Hype, but not in this thread....said it was one of the worst things about the movie)....and that brings up personal preference and opinion. My wife and I are fans of Tolkien's books. Over the years, there are times where we are doing the dishes together...and we sing the THAT'S WHAT BILBO BAGGINS HATES song. So seeing that in the movie was a wonderful moment for me. I have heard from several others on here it is a wonderful moment for them as well. So....some people are disappointed in the movie because it included a song that is in the book and loved by many. That's their preference.

I for one loved the inclusion of the songs. I was pleasantly surprised that the [BLACKOUT]Goblin song[/BLACKOUT] made it in, as brief as it was.

A couple of thoughts....

I've also read where where some people have complained about the traveling scenes. That they are just padding and boring. I personally think back to watching the movie yesterday and saying to myself while those scenes played....wow, beautiful, wish I was there.......again, personal preference. That's the way it goes with life. What you love....someone else hates....what you hate....someone else loves.

I didn't think I would enjoy the songs going into this film , but they were very enjoyable for me. I haven't read the book or watched the cartoon film since middle school so I forget that is part of it , but it was odd how some memory did come back to me during certain scenes.

Also I find myself enamored by the gorgeous cinematography so the traveling scenes are always fun.

It's certainly a matter of preference. I don't think anyone could say this is a terrible film, but not everyone will enjoy it as much.

The scene played exactly like I hoped it would with Bilbo silently realizing he wants to join but knowing the cost.

I figured the eagles were afraid of the Nazgul mounts; hence they hung back until the victory seemed decisive.

Just got back from the movie. It was awesome!

PS: Anyone got this pic in HQ????

Saw this today. I give it a solid 8/10. It would be more but I really had to adjust to all the extra material. I sepnt a bit of time saying, "that wasn't in the book." I am sure it will all fit together nicely when I've seen all three and all the pieces fit better. :) LOts of great acting, lots of great effects. I'd go see it again, easy. :)

I love how Gandalf just pretty much saves the day...numerous times. hehe.

Thorin is a prick from the beginning, starts loving Bilbo again, and then becomes a prick all over again in the book. How is this a valid criticism of the character in the movie when it comes straight from Tolkein?

Bofur, Balin, Fili, Kili and the others more than make up for Thorin being a dick.

That's what I thought. And this up and down relationship between Bilbo and Thorin is going to continue, this is what brings in the character development into these movies. We saw it with Pippin and Gandalf and Legolas and Gimli.

Just saw it in high frame rate and it was leagues better than regular frame rate. I think the critics are being way too harsh on it mainly because they know how films are made - I highly question they would have such concerns if they were a regular theater goer. The image was better for the majority of it - just like looking through a window basically at many times throughout. I went with my Mom who commented that the pictures does look clearer. As a guy who's been on studio film sets, studied film, and work in the industry - yeah, I took notice but only because I knew how things work. I've seen first hand what sets are made of. For example, if you're looking at some of the caves to probably be made out of styrofoam - you'll probably take notice of which ones are and which ones aren't. But for a regular viewer who doesn't look for things like that and doesn't even know? I doubt they'd notice that. Only thing they'd catch was fast movement which was only in the first ten minutes or so, overall a much clearer picture and a true window into Middle Earth.

I don't really understand the "like looking through a window" comments myself. While I didn't particularly mind the frame rate change for most of it, quite a few shots looked dreadfully artificial despite being filmed on real sets, the early scenes in Bag End in particular but also the Radagast chase scenes.

By the way, have you guys scene the new video blog detailing the work going into the premier?

Considering there are many people here on the boards who really disliked the HFR presentation, are they not regular people?

Coming from the book doesn't nullify anything. It either works on screen, or it doesn't.

Tolkein is not untouchable.

Depends. Wouldn't the people going to movie forums watch numerous behind the scenes documentaries and/or keep up with the video blogs? The masses don't really do that. So some here? Maybe. Most here? I'd doubt it.

Out of all of my friends, I'd say only my film friends watch behind the scenes features and that's saying fellow film students and people in the industry. Other than that? None do. Not even a major LOTR fan. It's just not their 'thing' - whereas people here and on IMDB? It's pretty obvious who the special feature buffs are. :cwink:

As said - if you know what to look for? You'd spot it. If you don't? I highly doubt they'd notice. It's the same reason why LA restricts film students and anyone working in the industry to attend test screenings. Anyone with knowledge of the industry, even if it's just behind the scenes features on a DVD, have knowledge that the masses don't have thus wouldn't particularly notice. Same reasoning here.
