Just saw this. The cg orcs/goblins weren't as bad as I thought they'd be. Azog was pretty good (most noticeable tip that he is CG was in the Moria battle, where he was dragged off after losing his hand), but not as visually exciting as the Bolg pic we have. Radaghast was NOWHERE near being the next Jar-Jar Binks. The dwarven halls we saw at the beginning were amazing and breaktaking.

I'll bet you one of those kids the camera lingered on in Dale will turn out to be Bard.

Thorin is awesome and Balin felt like that old grandpa/uncle you were best chums with as a kid. Bilbo standing up to Azog was cool. I don't know if mine was in 48 FPS or not; it wasn't a 3D showing but during the sweep through the dwarven halls/mining when the Arkenstone was found, it got a tad blurred. The CG of Gollum perched over the goblin, out in the middle of the lake, looked a bit dodgy.

@Bilbo: Well, at least the worst is behind us! :

You were (badly) trying to back-peddle from your original statements just now.

Nope. You were wrong. As I said. Eat up the crow. All of it.

I was wrong about the figure. However even Stevie Wonder can see it recovered nicely. I had expected Les Mis to take the weekend, not going to happen now.

I might be mistaken (and someone is free to correct me if I am), but I think the 48FPS/HFR is only being shown with the 3D showings, so if you saw a 2D showing, you were probably seeing 24FPS.

Speaking of the the HFR, me and my sister went and saw the movie for a second time today and decided to give the 3DHFR a try. It's not as bad as we were thinking. It did take some getting used to, I think by the time the dwarves left Bag End I was okay with it though there were a few moments later on where it was a bit off-putting with the CGI. The biggest being when Radagast & his rabbits distract the Orcs and their wargs. I thought the HFR with the sweeping landscape shots while the company was traversing the terrain were gorgeous. It gave it a kind of documentary feel and I actually liked it. My sister found she liked the HFR, she said that motion blur with some movies actually tends to give her headaches and with the HFR that was reduced and so she found herself preferring it.

If our theater is still showing the 3DHFR in the next couple weeks, we may give it another go since - after giving our 'report' - our mom thinks she wants to give it a try.

And I fully admit, this second time around I did find myself focusing on Thorin more... guy is simply a badass especially once he gets Orcrist... I don't know what it is about these English actors (Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch), but I keep finding myself falling into their respective fandoms... and now I find myself falling into the world of Richard Armitage (recently discovered North & South BBC miniseries with him, and can't stop watching it!) *lol* Gah... I'm such a fangirl :oldrazz:

Quick question, is there a difference between Orcs and Goblins? In the mountain scene it seemed like Goblins were their own little race with their own "king" while Orcs were a lot bigger and stronger and faster.

I always assumed Goblins and Orcs were the same thing during LOTR...

Theres one thing though I do believe Azog fought Thorin out side the Erabor because wasn't Thorins father trying to reclaim it but the Orcs where there first

No, they fought outside Moria in both the book and the film. Not Erebor.

Orcs were created when Melkor (basically an evil god that corrupted Sauron to begin with) captured elves and tortured them.

Tolkien used Orc as simply another name for Goblin, but many people end up using it to refer to the larger, stronger, and more dangerous versions. The Uruk-hai were a larger and stronger type of Orc as well.

For some reason it looked a bit like Ereber not Moria on the outside though. Jackson should put the name of where they are in middle earth cause In Rings a person can get lost if not well versed in all things the books

There was no need for that, Balin who narrated the sequence said it was in Moria.

I had a bunch of kids screaming in my theater so never heard that part.
Well that's a reason to see it again! :D

I did chuckle when the film had an abrupt mood shift from a bunch of merry singing dwarves and their reluctant host to a gigantic pale orc roaring and brandishing a dwarven head.

That was a kickass battle, but yeah it was a bit of a hard turn there. Its like "We're off on on adventure sha la la la trala la DEATH BATTLE FINISH HIM!":hehe:

So I was reading The Hobbit and at the part in the Battle of Five Armies when Thorin & Company leap out of the Front Gate of Erebor onto the Orc army I couldn't help but hear this in my head.

It is gonna be so cool to see that moment brought to life!

Where on the soundtrack is that?

^^ It's the track on the original soundtrack called "Roast Mutton". It's NOT on the extended version of the soundtrack.

Marvolo- Epic epic epic. The theme is a piece of genius.

Why bother putting out an extended version of a soundtrack if you're not going to include everything from the regular release?

Good question, because I actually bought the extended version on iTunes and I was PISSED that it wasn't on there. Then I went ahead and bought the "Roast Mutton" track on the original ST. I think the extended ST was a waste of my money. Should have just stuck with the other.

Haha I find myself humming that theme all the time. Such a rousing piece of music.

I did the same thing. Actually, the track that got me to buy the extended soundtrack was "Blunt the Knives".

Noticed a MAJOR problem when I saw the film for a 3rd time today. The orcs attack on wargs outside Rivendell... in the daylight. But as the film makes plain while they escape Goblin town, orcs can't travel by day. This is made clear in LOTR too. The Uruk Hai are special because only they can travel by day.

This means this is a major continuity error and inconsistency just so we can see radagast get chased about by some warg scouts...

They were hunting by day in The Two Towers as well when they attacked Theoden's people traveling to Helm's Deep. So it's just something I personally have to overlook.
