Some of the most impressive effects I've ever seen. Simply flawless. I didn't notice most of that stuff being an effect in the movie at all, especially when Robo is totally replaced with CG. When the first shots of the suit came out I was hoping they would augment the practical suit with CGI to make it look like you could see gears and pistons in the joints and looks like that's exactly what they did, also giving him proportions that would be impossible for a guy in a suit to have with regarding to "slimming" his abdomen area and the gaps where the leg meets the hip on the silver suit. Totally sold it.

This article on the suit fx is really good also:

Oh my god , big thumbs up from me to the CGI artists i did not have a bloody clue. Dark b thanks for that great insight.

Don't know if anyone is familiar with NY streetwear brand Mishka but they released some Robocop gear for the 25th anniversary that was pretty cool Mishka Robocop
I have two of the t-shirts. This one is my favorite:

They're releasing a poster/hat/shirt for the new Robocop today:

What if a really popular director like Chris Nolan or some really good action director (not Micheal Bay) take on Robocop.

Doubt the studio would pay for them when there are much cheaper options out there.

I would love to see Padilha return to direct a possible RoboCop 2, but if he doesn't, I hope he'll at least contribute to the screen story and co-produced. Maybe even have a say in who should direct.

On another note, I'd like to see the producers try to get Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner to contribute to a sequel story. Both Neumeier and Miner have both approved how Padilha rebooted this character. Miner even said he would love to return to writing a RoboCop movie again. If you had Padilha, Neumeier and Miner create a story together for RoboCop 2, I think we could have a truly epic RoboCop sequel.

I wouldnt even mind Verhoeven being a producer or something if he was up for it. Still loved his idea of a Robocop 4 set years in the future and Robocop is shut down and boxed away.

Either way, Padilha coming back would make me happy, although the BO returns arent looking too good at the moment.

Never trust promo circuit stuff. They always sound happy doing that stuff. Truth comes out after about a year when their contract expires.

I thought Alan Taylor found a subtle way to show he was unhappy about how TDW turned out. He was happy and smiling but you could tell he wasnt happy.

But following this train of thought, if this does get a sequel, what directors would be a good replacement to maintain the same PG13 superhero-y style tone?

I would prefer Padilha came back, if not him Francis Lawrence or Duncan Jones would be my personal picks.

Wow, no wonder it looked so awkward, I mean it's great, but I definitely noticed that it was digitally tampered with, and it hurt those sequences for me personally. I don't understand why they had to change so much about it. I understand the joints, but the actual construction of it shouldn't have changed.

Oh well.

Ditto. They could have toned down the big changes and it would have looked seamless. They tried so hard to not make it look like a guy in a suit. It's really noticeable when he's interacting with regular people. The CGI vs CGI stuff looked fine at least

I really couldn't even tell the difference there, I guess they fooled me and I usually pick up on those things immediately.

It was pretty obvious to me and the other reviewers/critics I talked with after the last screening I went to. Some of the scenes looked like they needed another month of rendering. I dunno. Maybe we're more attentive to that kind of stuff

I don't think so, I think some of the effects definitely looked like they could've been polished a little bit more especially some of the robots, I'm referring specifically to the above render of making the suit slimmer, but I believe sometimes I get so invested in the story I don't really take time while viewing to think about cgi or any of behind the scenes stuff.

I believe that would pretty much ruin the film going experience if all I did was sit there and pick things apart, I want to be invested in the world they're presenting, unless something looks really bad or really irks me I don't let it take me out of the film.

Great article, really impressive stuff. That totally takes care of my "man in suit" complaints. Strange that even many of their promo shots were of the unmodified physical suit and not the final enhanced suit.

I'm seeing this tomorrow, but even if the story sucks, I'm not going to complain too much with all these beautiful effects going on. The technical side of things really interests me.

I don't know what half of you all are talking about. I didn't notice any cgi on his suit what so ever watching the film and I hate when I notice things like that. They did a perfect job on his cgi suit alterations.

I'm a stickler when it comes to stuff like that and I have to say that you can't tell that the silver and black suit was tinkered with.

Some of the action sequences needed polishing but Robocop himself in any slow paced scene or dialogue scene was flawless.

No no not tinkered with, but completely replaced. The close up (slow paced) stuff looked fine but when he's
running through the warehouse to the rice fields and the final scene with his family it looked really, really bad to me.
You can tell he was superimposed into the frame. Would like to see those scenes with the practical footage instead just to compare.

I will say the silver suit did look fine in slower paced scenes(mostly just being mounted), but when he is running in the fields of china for example, it looked bad to me. When he first got out of the mount an walked around it looked bad to me aswell. I cringed a bit, but got over it quickly.

The concept was awesome enough for the CG not to bug me as much though. I noticed the CG but then got over it because it is technically impressive.

This coming from a guy who thinks gollum looks like **** lol, I'm much more critical.

^ I do agree with that, the scene where he first finds out he's been made into a hunk of machine and he's running out of the facility, the from the back shots of him running didn't look all that great.

I finally saw this. And I must say, I REALLY enjoyed it. Almost enough to say I loved it.

Keyword: Almost.

The glaring issues with the 3rd act (particularly the rushed and somewhat odd ending itself) brings the film down quite a few notches. But even without that, the first half was vastly superior anyway.

I really do feel the poor critical response is not a good representation of this film's quality.

If you go into this film focusing solely on the fact that it's a remake of the Paul Verhoeven classic, you'll probably hate it. And to be frank, this is the mindset that 95% of critics and fans of the original will go in with. But if you can get past that, and accept this for the well acted, generally well directed film it is, as well as the pure reimagining its meant to be, then it will be quite enjoyable.

I give it an 8/10.

I definitely want to see a sequel.

Awesome to hear SpideyFan so glad that you seemed to enjoy it as much as I did.

I think this would've been perfect if they had done just a few things differently:

1. Bigger budget for more efficient cgi polishing or complete CGI suit. As much as a loved the work they did, they really needed a larger amount of time or more funds to make it just right. In a few, but very noticeable spots, the cgi and practical just didn't mix. I really do feel that a full mocap cgi suit (ala Iron Man) could've fixed all of these problems (held mostly by the second suit he wears). I hope they consider that route for the next film, should they make it.

2. Longer runtime. This film was much too short. We really should've had more time with Murphy prior to his accident, and after he had his emotions taken away. These sections really would've improved the film.

3. Female Lewis; Revamped family subplot, possibly with Anne Lewis in the mothers place. Lewis did jack **** in this, and while I didn't hate the family subplot, it would've worked better if it was executed more in line with RoboCop 2, where his wife (and presumably son) cared and wanted to know if Murphy was still Murphy, but he chose to let her think his face was nothing more than a way to honor his memory (I.E. Letting them go). And as far as being the thorn in OmniCorp/OCP's side (in regards to their treatment of Alex), they could've had Anne largely fill that part.

Though honestly, it would've just been simpler to have Anne Lewis (as she was in the original) be his wife in this, and have the story unfold as is. Just say they met on the force, got married, and she retired to raise their son. And the male Lewis who is his partner (and doesn't do much in the story) is her brother.

Well it looks awkward when he's running because he's running in super awkward perfect robot form lol.

Funny you say that Spidey because my main gripe was I really wish they added 15-20 minutes to the runtime to give more pre-Robocop character stuff for Alex, I felt I really didn't know the man as much as I would've liked, I loved his Robocop but his Alex left a lot to be desired, that's all I could think after I saw the movie.

Saw this last night and it's a solid film, but I feel like it's pretty tame. They could have went further. They had the satire there, and there were very interesting ideas, but things could have been more ramped up. I think the R rating would have benefited the movie more in terms of tone and how far they could go in getting across some of the ideas.

The bookends to the movie were brilliant though, I must say.
