I don't believe that "consensus reality" is "reality". If you polled WWII-era Germans and asked them if Jews are inferior, "98%" of them would say "Yes, they're filthy, sub-human animals." Yes, I'm afraid I CAN argue that point. Predator 2 is almost universally reviled. I think it's one of the best films ever made. And I am "right". Everyone else is "wrong". 90 Billion critics could tell me that it sucked. It would have absolutely no bearing on my enjoyment of, or admiration for the movie.

My support is my knowledge of film and how I discussed these films in this topic. I was merely exteneded a thanks to NOFX for his comments not using them as my defense - I don't need that as my discussion on this topic speaks for itself.

Both you and Wilhem have been taken to school since I started posting posting in this topic. GO back and look at how Ed Gein was brought up for example and read the rest of these posts and you will see for yourself.

I will put it to you in an easy way that you can understand, because you don't seem to be that well read or you would never say that SE7EN's story is better than SOTL as you clearly have't read any of Thomas Harris' works (RED DRAGON and SOTL are classic books in that genre).

Ask anyone who has seen both SOTL & SE7EN what was the name of the character played by Brad Pitt in SE7EN. How many people you think will be able to name his character? If you are lucky 20%. Ask these same people the name of Foster's charcater in SOTL and I will bet anything that at least 90% of them (if not more) can tell you Clarice Starling. You can't do the same for Spacey and Hopkins as Spacey's charcater was named John Doe. However, ask these same people the name of Hopkins' charcater and 100% of them will tell you Hannibal Lecor. Why such a difference? Simple, Clarice Starling and Hannibal Lector are two of most memorable characters in movie history - period. Why? SOTL is a classic thriller that was both expertetly acted and expertly directed, plain and simple.

As for David Fincher, I think he is a wildly talented director who has directed one classic movie, but that film is not SE7EN. It is FIGHT CLUB, one of thr single best book to film interpretations of all time along with SOTL. I enjoyed THE GAME. I enjoyed PANIC ROOM. I enjoyed SE7EN. Do I blame him for ALIEN3? No, I understand the studio handcuffed him with ALIEN3, so that film can't be held against Fincher. FIGHT CLUB is a classic, so don't give me that nonsense you spouted about Fincher. Am I excited for Fincher's next movie, ZODIAC, absolutely as I believe that Fincher can learn from the mistakes he made in SE7EN and, hopefully, make a truly classic thriller in ZODIAC by correcting the elements of SE7EN that prevented it from being one of the greats.

Did I enjoy Se7EN? Yes. Do I think it was a very good film? Sure. Is it a classic? No. SOTL is a classic - period.

Oh, for the record, so we don't get into it with my opinion of FIGHT CLUB. Chuck Palahniuk is my favorite author of my generation and when I read FIGHT CLUB in the early 90s years before it was a film, it instantly became one of my favorite books. Can I make as compelling an agrument of the quality of the movie version of FIGHT CLUB as I can with the movie version of SOTL? No, as FIGHT CLUB, IMO, is a classic for ceratin people and a certain audience (BTW, most fans of the movie FIGHT CLUB actaully have no idea what the film is about but that is a different subject). SOTL is a classic thriller, plain and simple as it translates for any audience where FIGHT CLUB truly translates for a specific audience. So, before you rant about this topic, I wanted to make this clarification as I known full well that many people do not understand FIGHT LCUB even most of its so-called fans.

I seriously doubt the figures on clarice and hannibal is well known cos he is a cartoon character,thats why,his liver eating gained him notoriety it had nothing to do with great acting or directing,he is a special attraction nothing more,a big gimmick that caught on a bit like hulk hogan,

Go out and ask people who have seen both films and you will be able to see for yourself about just how many more people can name Clarice Starling than they can name Pitt's character whatever the name was as it was not a memorable performance by any means (which is why you compared Freeman to Foster when the true comparison in characters is Scott Glenn's character to Morgan Freeman's character and Brad Pitt's to Jodie Foster's, but you would actually have to be able to comprehend what a protaganist is to be able to understand). Protaganist - The main character in a drama or other literary work. Get it or are you too much of a dilettant to understand.
