Solo Solo: A User Review Thread

Just got back from an IMAX 2D viewing. We liked it a lot. Extremely enjoyable. Had no issues with Alden. Wouldn’t mind seeing more SW movies outside of the saga like this. Same as Rogue One I just enjoy it more. I’m a life long SW fanboy and I just like to enter these movies without any expectations now. I want to explore more of this universe where the Empire is in control as a backdrop. 8/10u

Given I was dead against the casting for Han in this, was incredibly sceptical prior to going in to cinema, and left really pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere, costumes and feel was inherently old school SW and the cinematography was superb, solid if not spectacular performances and overall liked it a lot.

Was the right side of fan worship with it's nods to what had gone before and was far darker than I envisaged or expected it was going to be.

Still say Anthony Ingruber should have been cast as Han and can't believe he wasn't but Alden Ehrenreich did a reasonable job.

9/10 for me.

Just back. Fun film, definitely worth a look on the big screen. Alden is fine, Glover is great, Harrelson is underused but fine with what he’s given. Chewie gets the most development. Tons of fanservice but it’s mostly done well. The story is pretty thin (like tissue paper thin) but it’s only there to connect the action setpieces, which is what you’re there for anyhow.

I agree with the complaints that it’s underlit in places, and the pacing within some the action scenes was a tad slow. I think that might annoy me more on a second watch, but it was just a passing thought during today’s show. I’d give it a 7.5/10.

I swear I'm not throwing shade at you at all but I think the people who hate TLJ most are the perfect target of Solo. If they skip this because of TLJ then they're missing out big.

I heard some of the ‘boycott Solo’ crowd are buying Deadpool 2 tickets and sneaking into Solo, which makes this the dumbest boycott I’ve ever heard of. But, these were never the sharpest knives in the drawer to begin with.

Anyway, we used our free passes from the projector mishap on Saturday and saw the whole movie this afternoon. Holds up even better on the 2nd (well, 2-1/3) viewing, and my folks loved it.

Grouchy fandom be damned, I really enjoy this one.

Yeah, the "Boycott Solo" mentality is incredibly stupid. They want Disney to stick to tradition and to cater to "what the fans want". And they plan to do that by targeting their shot at traditional nostalgia and willing it to fail. I can't understand how they don't see how counterproductive this is...

I'm pretty meh on this. I don't think it was bad by any means but it was simply mediocre. The best part of it for me was Chewbacca.

I didn't care for any of the new characters the way I did Rogue One's. Those guys grew on me instantly and aside from L3, these ones really didn't

The main word to describe this movie would be charming. I really found it charming, the cast on the whole was charming and so was Alden - by the end, if I squint at the screen I could almost see and hear the OG Han. The first 20 minutes were a bit weaker then the rest, I think the movie in general needed a bit more humor, thought I liked that what we got wasn't the standard juvenile crap Disney and Marvel have been spewing lately. I really enjoyed Emily Clarke here as well, I'm not her biggest fan on GOT, so she was a very nice surprise here. The movie lacked some narrative surprise, besides
the Darth Maul reveal
, and wasn't very risky. But, on the whole, it wasn't a disappointment I feared it would be after all the upheaval behind the scenes. And this movie really felt like it actually takes place in the OG Star Wars world, far more then any of the new trilogy or Rogue One.

Spoiler tags or blackout are your friend (on a certain part of this) :cwink:

It would be smart if you used those tags in the quote since you just repeated the spoiler.

It's not the first time someone has written that spoiler untagged in the wrong thread though. People do seem to have a hard time with these things. I guess it makes it less of an issue that none of my friends seem that interested in seeing this in the theater. If I'm spoiled I might as well wait, as I was already fairly lukewarm on it.

Well the movie was pointless to me when announced and it really was
Only things I liked were Chewie and Harrelson everything else was just Meh and the less I say about Lando's Droid the better WOW SO MUCH CRINGE and the name reveal was LAME!

I'll say this about the movie it did have a nice set up for a sequel with that Cameo at the end but everything that preceded it was forgettable

Full disclosure, I did something like that for Fan4stic, LOL! I didn't want to give them my money, so I got a ticket for Ant-Man :oldrazz:

What I think is in general TLJ is “let the past die” while Solo is nostalgic. I know a popular blogger in Tumblr who praised TLJ to the sky but complained about Solo “check bucket-list of all fan-service moments in Han’s life” and that cameo made her INFURIATING (capital hers not mine).

Are you this popular Tumblr blogger?

Just kidding, you probably aren’t because your writing style isn’t similar, but she really likes L3 too.

I hated everything about L3, LOL!!!!

Wow, just never thought I can enjoy this so much like this.

The plot is solid enough IMO. The twist actually kind of surprise me because I was targeting someone else as a rat.

The pacing is absolutely incredible, very entertaining. Alden is... quite good. He's not quite charismatic as Harrison Ford but he did a very good job. The first arc is kind of rushed for me but that's fine.

This is the kind of movie that you dont have many things to say and discuss. Just sit down and enjoy it. Very entertaining and enjoyable film. I actually like it more than the 2 sequels movies.

I'd say that
The true nature of Enfys Nest and her gang
was also another effective twist.

I thought it was pretty pointless. Does it add anything to the narrative? Does it makes care more about the character? To me Enfys wasn't given enough of a part to get me invested.

She's not really supposed to be someone who we have a huge emotional investment in. It's just a nice little notion that going in we're all expecting a
random money-grubbing pirate, and it turns out she's Robin Hood instead.

There's no big arc or foreshadowing of anything more necessary, it just is what it is. Another gray-area in a previously pretty black-and-white/good-against-evil series.

Yeah actually I really liked it. That's a good/proper way to do a twist. Also for being so young, that actress had some nice screen presence.

Out of the new Disney acquired Star Wars franchise films, I have liked only one of them, the Force Awakens. I really liked that one. The rest of them have been total disappointments in my book and Solo is no exception.

Let's face it we knew this film was in trouble when they fired the original director, and to Ron Howard's credit, he pieces together a workable film. The problem is this film is based around two throw away lines from the first saga, "It's the ship that made the Kessell run in less than 12 parsecs" and "Hey you lost her to me fair and square."

This is a movie that is in desperate search for a plot. The actors are all fine, the special effects are fine, the fan servicing is all there. The only problem is the movie is completely boring and unnecessary.

This is probably the worst of the post Lucas Star Wars efforts. The problems in the Last Jedi were specifically due to the director running off and doing his own thing rather than try to make a cohesive plot for the final trilogy, but his work is a complete work, it has a plot that makes sense, like it or not.

6/10 and that's being generous.

No The Last Dumpster Fire's plot doesn't make sense if you think about it for more than 15 seconds, it a poorly-written, plot-hole filled, nonsensical mess that doesn't even line up with what happened in TFA.

By contrast, Solo probably has the MOST cohesive plot of the Disney Wars films so far, with the fewest plot holes. And it's the most fun as well imo.

They should've just let Lord and Miller finish the movie.

I enjoyed this a lot. I got the Falcon porn I wanted, and I thought Alden and Glover did really well in their roles. Chewie was awesome as always, and Woody Harrelson and Paul Bethany can always be counted on.

Emilia was :hmr: and I actually really enjoyed her role here. I thought L3 was quite funny also. And the kessel fun was great to finally see on screen. 8/10, and I would see a sequel in a heartbeat. Cameo was awesome as well.

I agree. I went in not expecting much. But it turned out being my favorite Disney Star Wars movie. I smiled through the whole movie! And left happy. It just sucks that this movie is not doing as good as it could. I was really hoping it'd have decent numbers this week but not looking too good. :(
