Star Trek Beyond - Part 1

i dont think it will be Bad from the story , but a boxoffice success is never gurantated

I wonder... If the movie is bad, like really, REALLY bad, and it underperforms (which at this point seems likely to happen even if it's good due to the hack job Paramount has done with the marketing), will this be the end of Trek for a while? I know the old series had a number of duds and yet they kept making movies, but that was a different time and people were attached to that cast because they'd been watching them for decades. I know people like this cast but they've only been in two films (and only one of them was good, IMO) so I doubt there is as strong of an attachment. Additionally, now that Star Wars is back (and good again), it feels like Trek is playing second fiddle to it again. This of course wasn't helped by the fact that Abrams jumped ship to do SW.

CBS has the new star trek show so it wont be the end for Trek. Paramount might pull back tho and wait to make another film.

I honestly don't think there will be a fourth film.

i m sure it will be more sequels and a Movie Based on the New TV Show

These films are very expensive and have never pulled in the huge numbers that Paramount expected (none of them have even cracked 500 million) because people overseas just don't care about the property enough.

I think that pointlessly long 4 year wait in between Star Trek and Into Darkness damaged the momentum of the series tremendously and then you add on the sequel just rehashing Wrath of Kahn and despite most people not disliking it you have more killed momentum. I'd be surprised if there was a fourth.

I really think 'Into Darkness' tainted the goodwill the first one has. People have forgotten how well liked the first JJ one was.

I still love the first film dearly. It's flawed but it's so damn fun and there's something magical to it. I do think STID did taint it. It would have done so much better if they didn't do Khan.

The first film has a crap script but Abrams and cast made the film borderline great. If Wrath of Kahn Too did taint it then that is a goddamn shame.

I think Abrams is as much to blame over the script as the writers but Abrams is one hell of a director. He's so damn good it actually distracts you from the flaws until after you see the movie. He makes you manage to enjoy it within the theater and trick you at times. I mean the guy used to perform magic tricks as a child. He's doing it good and bad ways which is something I have to hand to him.

Yeah it's not so much the direction has issues with; it's the third act. Everything leading up to the 'reverse Wrath scenes' was good to great. The could've done so much with the third act but chose not to.

I think in terms of concept and the overall film, Khan was the main problem. That created the domino effect for the whole movie.

That's because so much of the good will was based upon the potential they had set up rather than the first film itself. By the end the pieces seemed to be in place for a great series.

Even if they wanted to do a play on Space Seed they could have had it so Cumberbatch was one of the other 70 superhumans. Not that they needed to do Space Seed at all but something different and worthwhile could have come out of it.

I guess my issue is that some people writing the series off. Already.

I still can't fathom why, with a brand new cast and the ability to tell ANY Star Trek story they wanted to, they felt like they had to go back and redo a story that had already been told, and one that they couldn't possibly top. It was a waste of resources.

Am I the only one who liked Into Darkness? I wasn't a huge fan of the originals but had seen WoK and really liked the different plays they did on the same scenario. Most of the GA probably didn't love the originals either so to me it was probably only an issue for fanboys.

I am still looking forward to this new Trek but things are looking a bit bleak at the moment. Hopefully they can give us a quality film. Looking h forward to Elba as the bad guy a lot though.

I liked Into Darkness and I hope Paramount will do a fourth/fifth one after Beyond is released.

And if Beyond is a critical failure, they could redeem the series by hiring a better director and writing team or better yet, bring back JJ Abrams to the director's chair.

I like STID a lot actually. I also thought Cumberpatch played an awesome villain, though I understand the dislike of him playing Kahn I guess. I feel like if Cumberpatch just had a different name, the movie wouldn't be hated nearly as much, but idk...

It wasn't just that they did Kahn, its that they did Kahn poorly. They were so dependent upon the holdover legacy of the older story that they literally had Spock Prime show up to deliver exposition of why anyone should even care about the character at all and then also explain how they beat him in Wrath of Kahn.

Much of the rest of the film is also dependent upon playing off of borrowed nostalgia or inverting classic scenes in ridiculous ways.

Spock yelling Kahn elicited outright laughter and then very quickly sadness at how bad it was.

These movies are bad fanfic and the franchise needs to move on.

Anyone else besides me actually love ST09 and SITD?

I love the first film and I quite like the second despite its flaws but the difference, I rushed out and bought the first film when it came out and I probably will never buy STID.

Agreed, even ifs bad I hope it makes enough for the franchise to continue.
