Star Trek Beyond - Part 3

^ I agree on some of the hand-to-hand bits, but I thought the ship battles/destruction were really good.

Also-- Man, Chris Pine. He was always great in this role, but here he's so... He's matured into it so well.

To me it was less a problem for the ship battles, but definitely a problem for the hand-to-hand. But it created a very herky jerky action style where so much of what happened onscreen was obscured.

I mean imagine that ingenious ZERO-g phaser battle in Undiscovered being shot that way. IMHO that scene still looks great.

It's been awhile since I've seen Fast Five & Six, but I don't remember the camera moving this much in those films. Beyond felt like a Michael Bay movie, there may have been only a couple of scenes where the camera was stationary (if at all). It was hard to focus on what was going on during the action sequences, especially in IMAX 3D (which seemed rather dark, like the picture wasn't adjusted for the shading effect of the glasses). It kind of drove me nuts that we never got a smooth establishing shot of any of the ships. I really wanted a better look at the Franklin, but that never happened.

Like with JJ's movies, there's this ADHD feel to them, lots of gimmicks and the characters are always on the move, as if the filmmakers are afraid the audience will get bored and nod off. They throw a lot of things at you visually, but very little of it is actually rooted in the story or character progression.

The camera was also tilted a lot at these haphazard angles which was mildly irritating. Again, I didn't see a reason for it in the story.

A tilted camera is called a "Dutch angle".

Last night I YouTube'd the TV Spot everyone was saying spoils a very important part of the movie (I successfully avoided it)-- What the hell?! They made that into a Spot?! It's not even an incidental thing like when fans screencapped a computer screen from STID with the name "Khan" on it... They put everything about a plot/character twist into a whole TV Spot. :funny:

Surprised some are suggesting it being a large scale TV episode might be taking some points from the film. I thought that was what people wanted, something more in line with the spirit of Original Series episodes.
That was definitely a "plus" for me.

I will finally be watching this tomorrow. Pretty excited. The brother and I watched ST and STID tonight in preparations.

It was a fun ride.
If rumors of George Kirk being in ST 4 are true, then that opens up another can of worms. Will it just be flashbacks, or, will George actually be interacting with Jim.
If he is really there in Jim's present through time travel, then one could argue about why can't they go back and save Vulcan, etc.

If that rumor is squashed, then disregard my post.

Idk if anyone has mentioned it, but I liked that Star Trek Beyond added "Kelvin Pods" to the Enterprise's bridge. It was a nice little touch and shows that the Federation learned from what happened to the Kelvin.

Saw it today, liked it. Minor complaint... too many destruction sequences, other than that, it really felt like a movie set in Star Trek universe, something which I never felt while watching last two trek movies directed by Abrams.

I would suggest - keep the same writers but get a different director, as good as Lin is, I think this franchise needs better (And by that, I mean someone who is not JJ Abrams.)

Unfortunately it's already been confirmed that Pegg and Jung won't be writing the next film.

J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay will write the screenplay. J.J. Abrams and Lindsey Weber will produce through Bad Robot Productions.*David Ellison and Dana Goldberg of Skydance will executive produce.

And Abrams is a hands on producer so his influence will most likely continue to be felt in the films as long as he is producer.

Could be a trip to the mirror universe.

Or maybe the movie franchise will finally remember they have a wonderful character by the name of Q who is tailor-made for a feature film.

The more I think about it, the more this movie benefited from having a tight schedule and pressure ironically. The thing we thought would **** this movie up actually served it better. If it wasn't for the tight schedule, we would have never got Pegg and Jung who were brought in last minute which meant less meddling from producers and other creative voices where it was just about getting the script right where they didn't have time to question as much. Pegg and Jung were just there to save them. They're as expendable as anyone else now.

Now with this movie's story and it being planned and Abrams having a more active roll, and Lin possibly not coming back, yeah I'm pretty worried.

I would say the problem here is that the opening for Star Trek Beyond was very soft, so it will need some strong subsequent weekends.

I got around to watching this today.

All things considered I think this was the best reboot movie thus far. It didn't steal from old Trek movies and play a big concept story worse than its predecessor. The plot was simplistic but it didn't annoy me and it mostly worked. The designs in the film were better than the previous movies, I especially enjoyed the swarm, it reminded me of Lem's "The Invincible". I prefer Lin's direction and even if it had a bloody ton of action those scenes mostly made sense within the script and didn't feel plastered-on afterwards. It also had good character interactions, better than the previous ones. The female alien heroine was likable without being an unbelievable superwoman or deus ex machina device. In Star Trek 2009 Kirk drives off a cliff for no reason other than to create a silly action scene. In Beyond he drives a bike and I guess it's equally gratutious but at least he has a reason to do it.

The new Spock and Bones interactions are practically as good as the old cast.
What do you guys want to see in the film series?

For me, I would like to show something unexpectedly different, and have Kirk and co. fight the Borg.
God, no. The Borg have been neutered enough by the insanity that was Janeway & Co. Even if they leave them alone for a century it might be too soon.
But more importantly: I really want a full scale Federation/Klingon war.
This. This or the full screen retelling of the Romulan war. (I realize that's the wrong time period.) As I mentioned in the series thread, Star Trek does not have a concept that easily lends itself to an action movie, but it can be successfully adapted as a war movie. The political, ideological and military conflict between the different powers in the quadrant is a cornernstone of its universe. Deep Space Nine proved that adapting Trek to a war setting could work wonders.

Saw it today and...I thought it was the best of the three. They had me pretty much all the way through. Pretty much everything I'd want to see in a Star Trek movie.

Just watched it and enjoyed it, was a definite step up from Into The Darkness.

They really should have Jaylah join the crew, we need another female to join them full time. Uhura was treated ok but I want her to have bigger role in a future sequel along with Sulu.

I would LOVE it if they introduced the Borg for the next movie. They could make it extremely creepy.

Saw it tonigh, I really enjoyed it, but for me it's the worst of the re-boot movies so far. I was never a Trekkie though, and hearing that this movie is more like classic Trek is maybe why I enjoyed it the least. I could never get into the old movies, and First Contact is the only Trek movie I have enjoyed before the re-boot series.

Saying that, the movie had some awesome scenes, the take down of the Enterprise was well done, and as someone else mentioned it took much longer than the trailer indicated. The finale was also quite good, as were he character interactions. Jaylah was a great new addition and I really liked her character and hope she comes back.

However, I did think there were some slow moments, which I never found with the previous 2 movies despite them being longer. And I agree with the criticisms of how some of the action was shot. You can tell Lin is a Trek fan, but he isn't quite as good a director as Abrams for me.

The cast were superb as always though, with the main 3 as stand outs and I enjoyed Krall as a villain, though I would liked a bit more explanation about how he was still around. But at the same time it was nice to see something new. 8/10

This film was pretty good. It's not as good as the first but it's damn near close. It blows Star Trek Into Darkness out of the water, though. This film felt like a Trek film with the score, the atmosphere, and the humor. I've read that this film felt like an unmade episode from the original series with a 150+ million budget. That sounds about right. Great film and neat hinting for a future installment with the return of George Kirk.

The worst part was definitely the fight scenes, though. It felt like Batman Begins. I couldn't see s***.

Any specialty merchandise given away at any of screenings, cups or posters?

They were giving away posters and t-shirts at the theatre I went to. First time in my movie going experience that free stuff was given out, heh.

I thought the movie was pretty good. Chekov, Uhura and Sulu didn't get much to do. Hopefully Jayla comes back again. Carol Marcus too.

I think John DeLancie is too old for the part now, and could anybody else really do it justice? Unless it was just a Q and not *the* Q...

You dumb, bro. Individual pods don't make a lick of sense.
