Star Trek Beyond - Part 3

So that means we have to bring in Thor and put things into even more OVERDRIVE!

Yeah. It's starting to feel like Abrams has really Lukified Kirk's character in this series.

That's great cause the work has already been done. I've watched Trek so I don't need to see the details.

I'm just pissed seeing Star Wars making so much of it's property but Trek isn't doing the same. I appreciate the old timeline but let's just stick to one. I feel like it's becoming too insular.

So far Star Wars has just completely rehashes A New Hope and is coming g out with a movie that leads directly into A New Hope. Talk about insular.

Seems like in a world of franchises of superheroes, Star Wars, Fast and Furiouses, and Transformers, this one just doesn't have enough coolness to it anymore.

That's really the main problem. A film budget requires Star Trek to try to operate like Star Wars or one of those movies but it just isn't that kind of storytelling when it's at its best. Trek can give things that a Transformers film won't. The Fast films come closest when it comes to the "crew". Trek won't beat those things at their own game and it honestly shouldn't try.

More like Star Wars introduced a female and black man to lead a big budget blockbuster. Started a spin-off series with another female lead with a completely different aesthetic. Created new characters and tech for merchandise along with updating the old. Started a cartoon series to run alongside it to push merchandise for kids

I'm not saying Trek is a billion dollar franchise, but Paramount isn't exploiting the material in a smart way.

With the more adult era of Avatar the Last Airbender/Voltron/anime in general, there's no reason they shouldn't be making material for different ages without compromising Roddenberry's message of hope.

Maybe the next movie would feature an unknown new alien species as the villains in which no one knows their language and Uhura has to figure it out and decipher it or else they're ****ed.

Or let Uhura fill in at the helm for Chekov and do communications. The only reason not to is because she never did it in the TOS. Who gives a crap?

Then I want to see her run back and forth between her posts.

I really really really want Jaylah to at least be a recurring character. She was so sweet and badass and likeable. And Krall and the third act reveal [BLACKOUT]and his story actually tugged on my heart strings some. [/BLACKOUT]

All in all I was very very pleased. Well done Lin, Pegg, Jung, cast and crew! Y'all knocked the 50th anniversary film out of the park.

9.5/10

I was disappointed with the film, the first hour bored me with all the talking before the arrival on Yorktown and then the scenes at Yorktown slowing things up - but they were needed later for the end of the film. And when the crew was split up I wasn't enjoying any of the scenes except for Scotty and Jaylah. I read a review how fun the movie was and that the pairings were great but I kept waiting for everyone to get back together. The previous Trek films were enjoyable despite their few problems but the first hour just wasn't doing it for me and even in DBOX (which usually makes the experience better) I wasn't having any fun.

Something felt off. Maybe because they've done similar stories over the past 50 years of the franchise. The last hour picked up and I liked the reveal but it wasn't enough to make up for the slow first hour. Before this I was interested what they're going to do with George in the fourth film and I will still go see it but Beyond seemed like it was missing a rewrite to make the first half stronger.

I did like Jaylah and hopefully she returns and hopefully the villain
won't be from the future (Nero) or from the past (Khan, Krall) but with George Kirk appearing - some time travel is likely to happen.

Getting myself ready for Beyond when I see it this week. Having a marathon tonight. Just wrapped up ST09, just started STID. So excited for Beyond. Have always loved this new series  :woot:

I never liked any of the "classic" Trek movies, but absolutely love these new ones. I personally like the last 3 Trek movies more than anything Star Wars has put out the last 15 years.

Beyond was a good film with lots of well done action sequences. I was afraid Lin would go way over the top like he does in his F&F films but he didn't. Into Darnkess & Trek09 are still tops for me in this franchise, but Beyond certainly delivered. 8/10

I didn't like the last two Star Trek movies so my wife dragged me to go see this.

PROS:

- Would've been interesting how Picard would've handled the opening sequence.

- I liked how they pointed out how boring being on the Enterprise can be.

- Yorktown was awesome. Homage to Deep Space Nine?

- I'm assuming the little girl was Sulu's daughter, Demora.

- The universal translator

- Krall's fleet = Gah Lak Tus

- The Enterprise Saucer!!!

- I knew they were going to slide down the Enterprise Saucer. Usually, I'd b*tch about this cliche, but it was a cool sequence.

- Spock laughing had me like O_O

- Throwback to Part 1 with Kirk riding a motorcycle

- I thought I was going to hate Jaylah, but she won me over. I hope she replaces Chekov from here on out.

- Bones gets better with each film.

- I fu**ing lost it when they show the original cast's photo. Not only are half of them gone, but my uncle, who passed away, had the same photo that he bought from the Star Trek store in Las Vegas with all 7 cast member's autographs. :(

CONS:

- Carol Marcus being ignored.

- The brandy should've been Romulan ale!

- It was cool they finally put in Finnegan. He wasn't much of a jokester though.

- I knew Kalara was in on it. B*tch should've been disintegrated by a phaser of instead of the over the top death she got.

- Sulu being gay. Not buying it. I'll just pretend he was going through his experimental phase.

- Everybody can take out armored alien warriors including Uhura.

- at Scotty jumping to the cliff edge.

- "Fight The Power". I wanted to yell "Turn that sh** off!" in the theater.

- Kirk having his Vin Diesel moment with the jumping save.

- Megatron...I mean Krall being human. Another dumb twist that ruined the character like the writers did with Harrison. Edison ain't Rambo!

- "With this weapon, he can destroy all of humanity" cliche as seen in almost every Star Trek movie ever made!

- They saved the world by playing the Beastie Boys.

- Why didn't they blow up the ancient weapon at the end?!!

- They couldn't wait until the next movie to get a new Enterprise?

Its the best Star Trek movie of the three. but Simon Pegg deserves all the criticism he gets. The film overall was "Meh." at best to me.

There's nothing wrong with the actors or the special effects in all these films. Its just that the writers & directors can't make a GOOD Star Trek movie. Give me the Klingons as the villains or The Borg or have Kirk save the whales again then I'll be impressed.

Saw this earlier. Not bad at all with some great moments
the Enterprise blasting the swarm away to Beastie Boys was great
, but otherwise I found it fairly tame and lacking to both of Abrams's movies.

don't you mean
The Franklin?

oh and I totally called them calling the new ship
Enterprise A
after the old one was torn apart.

oh and Jaylah was AWESOME mad props to Sofia Boutella I liked her in Kingsmen but LOVED her in Beyond!

Saw it on Saturday, even though the overall plot felt kind of weak I still really enjoyed it.

I absolutely LOVED Jaylah and I really hope she returns (as I think some others may have said - perhaps have her replace Chekov since they're not going to recast?)

For a some time i've wondered why people like Star Trek IV so much. With all the hype, i expected it to be an entertaining 80s film, but when i finaly watched it, i found the earth scenes average at best, and the whale comunication scenes awefuly boring. I actualy was more entertained by the Motion Picture, since in least, that film had great visuals to look at. Trek IV has aged like milk out of the refrigerator.

I'm saying this as someone who has not been bored by any of the original series episodes i have watched. I realy don't understand some of the nostalgia for the old films. For the shows i do, but aside from II and VI, i have never completely felt like the films have quite captured what i enjoy the most in the franchise.

Star Trek is returning to television where it belongs. Quite frankly though Imore than happy to not have every franchise dragged out ad nauseum in the Disney model.

Casting aside I'm still really unimpressed with Star Wars lack of new iconography.

Much like 1994's Star Trek : Generations Star Trek Beyond focuses on the passing of time, where one belongs in life, and where a person
can make the most difference in life Star Trek Beyond takes the aforementioned and mixes in a wee bit of Star Trek The Undiscovered
Country.
The cast does a spectacular job with their different portrayals of the well known characters that have now been arounf for 50 years.
Almost 3 years into their 5 year mission the crew of the starship Enterprise have grown together and bonded in various ways ,with some tension,
and chafing mixed in.
The character and introduction of Jaylah (Sofia Boutella) is refreshing, welcome and extremely likeable.I really enjoyed her interactions
with the rest of the cast.
Im so glad writers Simon Pegg & Doug Jung didnt make the villain in the film Krall (Idris Elb) a one note character ,though the film takes it's
time to fully flesh him out.
The flaws in the film can be found in a couple of plot holes, and the CGI and SFX look a bit choppy at times .
Other than that this was a highly entertaining and humorous adventure, with small doses of classic Star Trek.

R.I.P Anton Yelchin

Scale of 1-10 an 8½

idk, the joy of star trek IV for me was always the fish out of water type story - the members of the idealistic starfleet in the brutal world of the 80's on earth. it was a super fan movie and it really didn't need an antagonist in the real sense of the word. it was also an introduction of spock to kirk after his resurrection. also, i'm biased as it's my second favorite movie, after first contact.

i feel that star trek is the last great NERD franchise left - it's not about the action, it's about the science, the future, a wishful-thinking utopia and to me that always worked best as a tv show. the stand alone star trek movies, good ones, work because we already know the characters, their pasts, interactions.

I’ve been a Star Trek for about 20 years now, so it breaks my heart to realize that I probably won’t see another Star Trek movie again. This is not the Star Trek I grew up with. The constant jokes & smirking; the lack of philosophical or genuine character moments; the overuse & reliance on CGI; the speechifying and boring, waste of a villain…

I also have come to realize I don’t like the cast, either. On the last films, I thought it was simply the awful writing that held them back, and was responsible for my misgivings. But that’s just not the case. Zachary Quinto has the wrong diction and bravado as Spock (but that can be said for almost all of the Vulcans other than Sarek, Spock is just the most prominent); Chris Pine is too young and wild to convincingly play Kirk; Karl Urban’s weird imitation/caricature of a Southern accent is just off-putting and completely robs his performance of any dramatic impact; Scotty’s hyperactive Scottish shtick is just irritating; and the others haven’t had enough screen time to make a lasting impression.

As someone who very much disliked the last two Abrams films, I was hoping with a new director and writing team that things would change. Justin Lin was not someone I would’ve chosen, but it seemed like he said all the right things, and I was thankful the film would explore new worlds and new characters, instead of nostalgic navel gazing. I even thought Pegg as writer could be good, seeing as how I enjoyed Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.

It seemed like this film was either going to be better or worse than the previous two, and unfortunately I was correct. Even if I wasn’t a Star Trek fan, I would not have enjoyed it. Along with X-Men: Apocalypse & Gods of Egypt, it pains me to say that it was one of the worst film’s I’ve seen this year. I’ve been viewing less and less blockbuster films in theaters because of how disappointed with them I’ve grown in the last few years, so for what should be a sure-fire hit like Star Trek to miss so badly makes me even more wary wasting my time and money in the future. As much I disliked the last two films, I still bought them because of brand loyalty. I even went to see this one, despite my misgivings, because I still consider myself a Trekkie. However, I will not be buying this movie when it’s available. And honestly, not for the first time since the Kelven series was launched, I’m left wondering if it would not have been better to let Star Trek die with the cancellation of Enterprise.

I’m still hoping against hope that Star Trek Discovery will be some I can enjoy. To me, as much as I love the older movies, Trek has always worked better on TV, where it has the freedom to slow down and just let the characters breathe. With Bryan Fuller and Nicholas Meyer at the helm, I honestly don’t know anyone else better equipped to bring that to life. I just hope the current economic climate allows such (apparently) old-fashioned ideas to survive.

Have you seen the new trailer for that? Looks pretty awful.

Judging an entire series based just on how the ship looks? Okay.

^Yeah if we'd done that in the past, the DS9 would have never gotten the chance to get as good as it did. But that's fandom for you.

And to answer the question of "should they have just ST die instead of doing this." As some who does love old-school Trek, the answer is very simple, NO!!!! I'm sorry, but that is the height of "fandom selfishness." "If it's not exactly like how I personally like/want it, then it's needs to go away and, to heck with all of the people who actually do like it currently."

Especially since, in the case of ST, you've gotten FIVE TV Shows (800+ episodes), and TEN films over FORTY YEARS of the "old stuff." So you especially cannot argue that you didn't get enough with this franchise specifically. And honestly, I GLADLY take this over most of Voyager and Enterprise, or all of the TNG films except for FC, or TFF, or TMP, early TNG, etc. THAT stuff go truly unbearable at times.

As much as I liked this movie, ST is perfect for where television is right now and with Fuller behind it, it's gonna take a lot to **** that up. I got a feeling it's going to wind up and be better off where it originally was in the first place ironically.

Man, I HATED the cancellation of Enterprise. The show had just gotten good and started to really explore the foundation of the Federation when they ended it. And IDK, TOS/TNG/VOY were never aired in Serbia like DS9 and Enterprise were. For me those two will always be my Star Trek - even thought I watched the rest (not all the episodes but most). To this day, DS9 had the most effective overarching villain any trek show or movie ever had - Gal Dukat. (obviously the Borg are my favorite, but they aren't a character) And the storytelling was superb, especially from the moment Dominion came into the picture.

The opening for Discovery does look like late 90's early 00 CGI, but I'm hoping it's just not finished yet. Lets see where it takes us.

Yes at it's peak DS9 was the best of them imo. And even it's lesser moments weren't as godawful as the other shows.

Enterprise was a case of too little too late I think. They managed to salvage it into something decent, but by them B&B had already done too much damage to the show in the first few seasons. And then, in their infinite "wisdom" they ditched the people who had salvaged the show and brought back the two guys who'd made it so awful early on, to do the finale. Wow, that was so dumb I almost still cannot believe it.
