Star Trek Beyond - Part 3

I sorta liked Lin's new uniform and don't at the same time.

I like the high collars, but I don't like the lack of texture so in certain shots, the outfits look plain. It all looks like came from felt.

So I had my father watch this on blu ray and I usually feel he's a good measure for "GA audience" reception for movies. He loved the JJ Abrams films so I was curious to hear hia thoughts on this one. And his reaction was "I was disappointed, to be honest, it was ok but the first two were way better."

This was kind of my reaction to the film, too, it was entertaining but....it lacked something to make it pop for me like ST '09 and STID, I cant quite explain it but I'm assuming this sentiment may also be attributed to the GA and why this didn't do as well as the other two.

I feel like the third film fell a little flat in it's look and feel. I know a lot of people complain about the lens flare in the first two films, but I actually kind of liked them. [Don't kill me.]

The first two films were energetic, fun, and easy to get into. I never felt bored watching ST09 or STID. I think only a small minority of ST fans feel that STB is the best of the trilogy because of its resemblance to TOS.

I think that must be it. After I watched it in theater and felt kinda "meh" on it, I remember coming on here and the majority of posts were wildly raving about this and saying it was by far the best of the trilogy and I was like "damn, there must be something wrong with me or I must have missed something because I didnt feel this lived up to the first two which were, as you said, "energetic, fun and easy to get into" not to mention Abrams' cinematography was very pretty to look at.

As happy as I am that Abrams got to direct Episode 7, I think Star Trek has really suffered from it.

I really think that he should return to direct the next film, but without Kurtzman and Orci as directors.

Am I the only one who didn't care about Jaylah?
She didnt do anything memorable for me and her one fight scene was kinda lame
I can see how some might not care for her. Personally I enjoyed her. I also think that... *if* another movie is made, she presents a possible solution to the absence of Chekov (due to Yelchin's passing :( ). I could see her taking what was his position on the bridge. It would be a character that we've already been introduced to and that the crew of the Enterprise has already been introduced to as well and so you don't have that awkwardness nor do you have to spend much time introducing the character to the viewing audience. Might make the transition easier instead of bringing in some unknown character that has to be introduced to the crew (and to the audience)

If that makes sense. Just my personal opinion, of course.

I thought she was one of the better parts of the movie. Her introduction where she fights Scotty was a little ehh, but I liked the naivety to her character. Referring to the ship as her "house" and her choice in music, or "noise."

This movie has really good replay value, had my 3rd viewing tonight and have enjoyed it more and more each time. I just don't think it matches the first 2 movies in terms of scale. But it's character work is actually pretty damn good.

Really hope the chances of a 4th movie aren't dead.

To be perfectly honest, I'll take lens flare over uncontrollable shaky cam every day of the week.

Agreed, Lin's filming of the hand to hand stuff was really poor at times. I did like the way he did his space scenes though.

Yeah. I never really disliked the lens flare (although they did go over the top a few times where you couldn't see people's faces) because it gave the movies a distinctive look. Just like you know when you're watching a Star Wars film because of the aesthetic of it, you know you're watching a Star Trek film because of those lens flare. Too bad Lin didn't continue with it.

Yup, I like the lense flares, too. Always have. John McTiernan made heavy use of it, and it was always a beautiful thing to see.

Count me in as a flare lover. The specific lenses JJ uses also gives off many more colours than the others, too.

Yup, I really love the look of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movies.

I'm glad there's love for the lens flare in this thread. I have always been a fan of it, and funny enough, I was never really conscious of it the first time I saw ST09. I heard someone in a class bring up how it appears in every shot and I became immediately aware on my second viewing.

I wouldn't say I love the flare, but it didn't bother me THAT much in 2009. At times it did bother me a little, but I think it sort of offered this quality of how vast and deep space was.

I was more bothered with how Lin just obscured the action so much. I don't recall the fighting in the Fast and Furious movies being that over-edited either.

The action scenes in this movie really lack any energy. It's all just so... dull.

Pegg wrote it more as an actual TOS episode I guess.

If Pegg was going for a TOS feel with the movie then I think it was missing this.

Just watched this one.
While Justin Lin's directing isn't quite as manic and exhilarating as J.J. Abrams', and therefore lacks the same level of energy the first two movies had, it's still a (VERY) worthy entry to the series, and a great new chapter (and fitting conclusion, if it's the last one).
I find it really sad that these movies didn't really hit the zeitgeist, as they're probably some of the best blockbusters of this decade. They're fun, they're exciting, have GREAT characters and lots of heart.
They've got what I love about action and adventure movies, and are more memorable than most of the beloved comic book adaptations.

Although editing has a lot to do with that too, I think you nailed it.

If JJ Abrams stuck around, what do you guys think ST3 would have been like?

Also, there are no scenes in Star Trek Beyond that really stand out to me. I was never on the edge of my seat.

ST09 and STID both have pretty intense scenes... scenes that pop... like Khan crushing Admiral Marcus' head...

I thought the Enterprise boarding and destruction was nice and intense.

Agreed, it's the best action sequence in the movie. The problem is, the action is never as good after that moment. Though the more I watch the movie the more I am coming to appreciate the finale.
