People thought it would compete with Endgame. It's barely keeping up with Captain Marvel.

Well that came in around the spot I thought it would. I had $180 million high-end. The Star Wars brand has seen diminishing returns for a while now. And its not just tied to film. Its the merchandise, theme parks, and just about anything that carries the logo. There is allot of public apathy for the brand right now because its just going through the paces with new faces. This trilogy was too derivative of what was already done, and even more divisive when it did try to change course. Star Wars just doesn't have the same distinction it use to have. It needs to be parked for a while.

In terms of this latest film's projections, we'll have to see how well it does during Christmas break next week. Many forget this is the last weekend before Christmas which means you have shopping, parties, and everything that allot of people can't do in the middle of the week where the holiday falls this year. Hard to take time out for three hours in a theater. So what Skywalker bank rolls for Christmas eve and Christmas Day will be a good indicator of where the sophomore weekend takes us. Once we have those answers, we'll know fairly certain whether this film has any chance of crossing a billion. Too early to take it off the table just yet.

I think a billion is up in the air. With this opening it's not looking good, and you have to wonder how Jumanji will impact TROS' total.

I think that Jumanji 3 is going to gross less than it's predecessor too. That second film (I hated it) was lightning in a bottle with audiences.

In all the SW trilogies the first film grossed the most, but this marks the first time that the final installment made less than the second.

To me I'm not surprised. Even with the backlash of TLJ, fans showed up for the first two films to see Ford and Hammil's performances. This was the first film where the new cast had to carry the film and with such thinly written uninteresting leads the film collapsed under it's own weight.

Well if people were seriously thinking that than the jokes on them honestly, because this movie was never coming anywhere close to those kind of numbers, especially after the divisiveness of TLJ and Solo. That being said I see no reason why this couldn't have at least done IW numbers with an outside shot at $700M with the advantage of being released around the holidays. That's of course if everything went right for the movie in terms of critical reviews and audience reception and obviously the reception to the previous films in this franchise.

It probably didn't help that this was the first Star Wars film to be released five days before Christmas.

I'm not surprised that ROS is lower than the previous two as things pointed to that TLJ killed some of the SW interest. I did expect lower than TLJ because of that, although I did expect it to cross a billion just because of the general franchise power. Given the response to the film I'm not as sure anymore, but at this point it's too late to change predictions.

The numbers are a freaking disaster. The new cast sucks even Oscar Issac a actor I usually like but between this and his Apocalypse maybe he should stay aware from superhero/sci-fi franchises.

Aladdin was the lowest grossing billion dollar movie this year but if ROS manages to make a billion and at this point its a big IF it will probably just squeeze past a billion and be the lowest grossing billion dollar movie of the year.

Tbh just surprised people are surprised by this. The dislike for tlj was real. It wasn't russian bots, it wasn't a really loud few people. There was a big section of fans that hated it. Tlj was $1.3bn. Only needed 30% not to turn up for it to struggle to get $1bn. Some people enjoyed this so will probably get over the $1bn mark. I said a year ago between $1-1.2bn and i'll stick with it.

Starwars isn't dead though. Just needs better planning and writing going forward.

I said long ago in this thread TRoS had the smell of Justice League to it, it's performed almost exactly like it. I suspected something like this could happen, but to see it happen is another thing entirely.

Even though i disliked tlj i thought it would be a bad idea to try and retcon it.

Star Wars social media is lot more pleasant this time around. Virtually every comment on the movie is positive. (I loved The Last Jedi and was ok with this film.)

What really sticks out to me:

There were also alot of geek pundits and fans who shared the same assumption and felt that SW and Lucasfilm could do no wrong .

They dismissed alot of the complaints and warnings and claimed " Disney didn't need those fans".

As someone who's seen the Batman franchise at Warner Brothers go through ups and downs and has seen the Spiderman franchise at Sony go through ups and downs , I knew SW was not immune to that.

Still, you had alot of people in the wake of TFA and Rogue One who felt that the franchise was invincible.

I didn't expect it to drop this far but I think all the missteps that Disney/Lucasfilm have had the past few years really handicapped TROS before it even hit theaters. The lack of excitement for this installment was palpable ever since TLJ. I think many people have taken a wait-and-see approach for this film and the mixed reviews are not helping people decide if they're ready to come back in full force.
