State your unpopular film related opinion - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Part 32

One scene involving Andy Garcia is quite memorable.

Oh yeah. I'm stil not sure if that bit is ridiculous or badass (although not in the traditional sense), but once you see it, you don't forget it :o

The International is the most underrated thriller of this century so far, and has one of the most original gunfights of any recent action films.

I mostly remember The International for being that annoying trailer that played in front of every movie I would go see. Are you saying it's actually good? Looks like your run of the mill Conspiracy / Man Against The World flick.

I used to watch that one all the time as a kid; I always found it to be more fun on repeat viewings than the others.

...BUT as I got older, I saw why it was so problematic and borderline racist. I can see why a lot of people say it’s the worst Indy film (though that’s not a correct statement; Crystal Skull is by far the worst Indy film of them all).

It is racist, and sexist, unfortunately. I like it because the action is fantastic and I’ve always loved the Thuggee (learning about them, not actually practicing their ideology). And I actually like Willie Scott because, if she weren’t so downright stereotypical, she could have potential - and then I have to remind myself that, no, she’s just a stereotype and no amount of head-canonizing will fix that. In fact, now that you’ve reminded me of those glaring issues, I think I’ll amend my statement: Last Crusade is the best Indiana Jones movie.

It's absolutely bizarre for me how underappreciated this film is. My favorite.

Yeah, I go back and forth between Raiders and Last Crusade as the best of the lot... I’d probably put Raiders slightly ahead because Marian is the best female lead in the series and because it has so many iconic scenes, like the part where Indy just shoots the swordsman in the street. So funny that arguably the two most memorable scenes for Ford’s two most iconic characters weren’t even in the original scripts (that scene and the “I love you/I know” scene in Empire Strikes Back).

I find Raiders to be a bit slow-paced for my taste, and the action scenes aren’t as great as some later ones: specifically, I think the fight with the tanks in the desert in Last Crusade is the single best action scene in the franchise.

The International is a cut above the standard man against the world flick. It's a smart movie - it does rely on a couple of conveniences but otherwise it's very clever, not in terms of plot twists but by taking one of the most awful unspoken truths of capitalist society to build it's story on. The main character not an invincible Jason Bourne, but is still compelling. There are no invincible characters in the movie and although the best action scene is a bit fanciful otherwise the film feels quite grounded. I highly recommend it. Cheers.

Alita Battle Angel is good. I wouldn't mind another one.
Depp is a good Grindenwald, like a Goth Guy Fieri lol, but I don't need another one.
The Beach Bum is excellent and McConaughey gives an amazing performance as Moondog.

Marvel movies are horribly over-rated and generally do not stand up well over time.

Overrated compared to what? Because despite the odd outlier, the last 10 years have been the best time for superhero movies by a country mile.

No doubt of it...but volume does not equate to quality, and a lot of the Marvel movies are just entertaining popcorn films. Watch it, but a couple of years later it is largely forgettable.

I have to push back on that. You might feel that way and that’s fine (this is the unpopular opinion thread after all), but I feel like Infinity War and Endgame proved that these movies aren’t forgettable. Because (mild Endgame spoilers) when all of the heroes come back and charge into battle against Thanos, the audience cares about ALL of them. That’s quite an accomplishment. Yes, these are popular comic book characters that people have known for a long time, but the movies and the performances make them feel real enough to people that it gives a scene like that real weight. Again, I’m not saying that these movies have to have meaning for you personally, but the notion that they are just forgettable popcorn flicks that doesn’t stay with people, I feel, isn’t accurate.

Talk to me in a year. I enjoyed Endgame, but even as I was watching it I thought it was a one time see. A great spectacle and an amazing cap to a wonderful accomplishment...but that accomplishment is more, to me, a pop culture thing than a series of movies I will return to.

That's why they are so successful. They don't try to hide the fact that those type of movies exist purely for entertainment purposes and they are achieving that year after year.
We shouldn't undermine what it takes to create 23 films that are that entertaining. We know how easily that can fail.

I am not suggesting they were not successful. I am saying I find them over-rated and do not hold up well over time.

Fair enough. Change "successful" for "well rated". They are well rated because they accomplish what they set out to do.

Having rewatched for the first time in 10 years due to the release of the remake, I found myself not really liking The Lion King. Some charming performances and beautiful animation, but couldn’t find myself being invested or caring about anything happening.

I’d have to go through all of them again, but it’s towards the bottom of my ranking of the animated Disney classics.

This is probably an unpopular opinion and I wholeheartedly agree with it:

I haven't seen it in a while, but I didn't hate it. By the way, I enjoyed Alien: Covenant despite itself. The return of the Jerry Goldsmith-y score probably helped.

I just saw the new one, and I can hear ya on that
The plot is paper thin, no characters get any development, backstories are entirely left out, as a Hamlet adaptation its really weak

But it did have beautiful art, some unbelievable catchy and top-notch songwriting, and Timon and Pumbaa... so, we forgive those things lol

Prometheus is as bad as someone taking a piss in his own bottle of water and expects me to drink it as a prank, my reaction would be holding back from throwing the bottle back at the pissers face.

Visually beautiful, but piss poor characterization is the key to terrible storytelling in the case of that garbage of a film
