Supergirl Supergirl General Discussion Thread - - - Part 12

Answering why he isnt around to help is makes sense since it deals with Kara, answering why he is "off world" or whatever doesnt have to do with Supergirl so if people asked at least it isnt something they'd have to e go out of their way to explain since that's just his own journey.

But I do want an episode where Kara goes to Metropolis to help Supes out of a jam.

Yes, definitely.....

Even if Tyler Hoechlin is available, it comes down to whether WB will allow further use of Superman on Supergirl.

This is the crap that irks me the most about WB...The ridiculous restrictions it puts on the shows. Why not let Supes, Bats, WW and Green Lantern appear? I am sure viewers are smart enough to realize their is a different cinematic and tv universe. It's not like Marvel & Fox with the X-Men where a different studio controls the rights.

But its ok we are going to get Metropolis..A show with all the characters except the one everyone wants...Superman. :whatever:

Also it's not like we're getting a sequel to Man of Steel anytime soon either.

Supergirl is likely going to be the only place to show Superman.

It's a tough one when you've got such powered characters.

Think; if they had Superman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern within the Arrowverse, then every time there was a threat (those posed toward Kara are usually global pandemics) then the other heroes should be showing up to help out, which then turns the show into a small-screen Justice League.

We've already got this issue between Arrow & Flash; the number of situations that Barry could help out with when Ollie is in trouble, but if he kept popping by, both shows would be vastly different.

With that said, they should explain established characters; they've shown that Superman exists on the CW within Supergirl, so where's he been when she's had a beatdown by Reign? Kara found Argo City and some more living, breathing Kryptonians and yet not once since her return has she thought about telling her cousin about this place? Instead she just leaves Earth to live with her people again?

It's lazy writing. There's not even a reference to him. All it would have took is a line from Kara "I spoke to Kal, he wants to stay here on Earth with Lois." and we'd be content, but no, nothing.

Hmmm. Last I checked, Metropolis was NOT going to be a part of the DC Digital Universe as of yet. Deadline reported the series was being 'redeveloped':

Wait I thought that was called "Smallville"...... :sly:

Smallville is still the worst live action DC show since Lois and Clark by a wide margin. I can't stand Gotham but it's still head and shoulders above Smallville. Tom Welling is just a ridiculously horrible actor.

You wouldn't believe how much I reviewed the show and been really critical of it, especially its finale.

I did enjoy it. Yes, their were a lot of cringeworthy things....but man I was so upset that I waited 10yrs for him to finally be Supes and it was digital.

Almost everything good about Smallville was eroded by the fact that it lasted so damn long.

To me, Smallville had its flaws, but it handled its character development and mythology better, and it paced things better than a lot of what current DCTV offers. It, like Supernatural, allowed it to have a certain resilience. For instance, the shift in the later seasons to something more superheroic and to different supporting characters, like Lois, helped it feel fresh, and it offered more teases and development of iconic Superman elements. By contrast, I find shows like Supergirl rush through so much and handle their supporting characters so poorly that it almost feels wrung dry after just three seasons.

I'll also say that while Melissa Benoist is superior to Tom Welling in acting ability, I thought Tom did a good job and was given more of a range of things to play. He had good chemistry with all of his costars and he really took a leadership role on the set, trying both directing and producing.

Smallville remains my least-favorite screen incarnation of the Superman mythos to date. Though, to be fair, I still have never seen Superman IV or the Supergirl movie, so maybe I’d like those even less. But as it is, Erica Durance’s Lois is pretty much the only aspect of that show I can look back on fondly. Welling was just The Worst, IMO.

I just I don't feel the same way. It's not as if there weren't aspects of it that didn't work for me, but it covered the mythos with depth and created characters and character arcs that were intellectually and emotionally compelling. It also crafted numerous relationships, including romantic, platonic, and familial relationships, that were layered and evolved over long periods of time. It also had writers that knew its own characters and their past, so that there were thoughtful callbacks to things that made the show feel like it was cohesive. Although Welling isn't as strong of an actor compared to Benoist, he did a good job, and he as well as the show were improved by a very talented supporting cast of actors in important long-term roles.

Supergirl has the potential to be so much better, but it squanders it on a weekly basis. While the actors are talented, the writing underserves them to the point that what they're acting either doesn't ring true or isn't emotionally rich. Meaning, something like Kara's reunion with her mother could have been well-served by her talent, but the writing took that opportunity away. Everything is rushed, including characterization, which makes it hard to get invested. Meanwhile, other actors who are talented are wasted in roles that are more exposition and plot device than actual dynamic people. It's only its third season, and it already feels like it's running on fumes.

Pretty much the only thing I agree on there is that Supergirl has the potential to be so much better, but to each their own. :)

It's not that it lasted so long. It's that it didn't evolve but remained somewhat stagnant and too bound to its original premise. At some point it should've just become a straight Superman show with both tights and flights. After a while it felt that it wasn't moving forward but deliberately in a holding pattern.

I think Supergirl will also have to evolve in order not to get caught in the same trap. Of course, she's already Supergirl and that's better. But perhaps in terms of other developments she'll have to move forward.

Greg Berlanti will be staying with WB through 2024 for $300-$400 million.

Crikey! :wow:

That certainly sounds like a lot at first, but when you consider he's got more shows on the air than any producer in history...it makes sense.

No worries.
