Haha, no seriously though, you can't have a batman film without showing him breaking a few bones, by the sounds of things you'll love the first 40-60 mins of TDKR, I hear it's very character heavy, action light. (apart from the prologue)

My favorite part of this franchise so far has been Bruce's origin in BB. The rest of that movie has some great parts but then falls apart during the climax. TDK also has some great character moments throughout, obviously. But it too falls apart by the time you get to the climax. The two best parts of the movie don't even have any action in them (interrogation scene plus Dent/Gordon/Batman at the end). You could make an amazing "detective Batman" movie with a trimmed down budget and a mysterious story for him to figure out. It would be focused primarily on characters and story and not having these 10 minute action scenes thrown in for the hell of it.

Not for me. People like to act like just because the chase happened, the film felt over. I never felt like the film was close to over. It was just getting started. The Joker just got away, Harvey was just scared and the city was more frighted then ever. It was not dissimilar to Michael's revenge in The Godfather.

The Joker's scene in front of the fire made it quite clear we were just getting started.

It's still not about being 'over'...it's more about pacing and sort of the the density of the energy over time. Kinda' hard to explain....almost musical-like in having too many big loud passages packed together. It need more visceral space between it, if you will.

Not doubting you but from where?

IGN article i think, interview with the main man chris after the press prologue showing. Chris says something along the lines of the prologue being so intense in action because a large part of the first hour is all just exposition and build up. I should find it....but i really can't be bothered. :oldrazz:

3 hours. Nice! Not surprised though. Each film has been pretty lengthy. I just hope Nolan has improved on the pacing. The Dark Knight had a couple of scenes that lingered on for a little too long.

Oh it was all important...just a bit too much as a whole. Like a meal with a certain side or sauce is vital....but if it's too rich it'll leave you feeling bloated.
That happens me when I eat Italian meals in a restaurant. Yummy, but too rich.
I dunno, I still feel the end of TDK works very well, if anything about it annoys me it's the quality of the acting on the passenger ferry (and the voting).

Jeez you really like this eating analogy :woot::oldrazz:

But yes I do get what you mean and somepeople may feel its one action scene too many but personally I enjoyed it alot and was great fun to watch.

Sometimes it's the easiest way to relate something to folks. :D

I understand what you mean and I'd love a purely detective Batman film but IMO theres no way any of the action scenes in TDK were thrown in for the hell of it, all of them moved the story along.

Put it this way...like with eating (again :D)...some folks can keep just packing it away. But for some, it's a little much and a slightly svelter approach would sit well for both...if that makes any sense. :O

Also, that Zimmer music was like a wet bag of cement pounding you over the head...which contributed to it feeling a bit too heavy.n

You may need to go to the doctor and make sure you don't have digestive problems. :cwink:

We've had this conversation before i think, but i think the 3rd act for TDK is very love it or hate it, regardless the harvey/gordon/batman showdown makes up for everything, but the 3rd act of BB? the tonal change is so disappointing, you get such a great adventure, character study, neo noir crime theme with it and it devolves into the most basic action comic film ever.

But yeah as much as I'd love a detective batman film, it won't happen. Even the sherlock films have added action to it, WB wouldn't take that road.

Or when you look at the body weight of many Americans especially, it's no surprise why some would like it. :O

If the story is really designed and paced like a war movie I can imagine it corresponding to a big runtime without feeling too bloated. There's also a lot of catching up to do after the time skip.

But that isn't how TDK plays out. The energy is good throughout. It paced brilliantly with proper moments to recover and ends with your blood pumping.

Good point

For the most part I agree, but just too overstuffed towards the end.

3 hours seems slightly indulgent but if the film needs to be 3 hours for Nolan to tell it completely to finish Bruce's story, so be it. It won't break any box office records. People will whine about the length but if this thing really lands at around three hours, then Nolan's going for broke in a big, big way....

I disagree.

July is empty. Spider-Man will fall out of theaters fast and what theaters can't do in 8 showings in one theater, they'll spread across 5 showings in 2 theaters and clean out their house. In a way, it may even help TDKR if more theaters devote more screens to it.

Both TDK and BB (especially BB) could have used extra minutes to let their scenes breath a little.
