I have very fond memories of Smallville (flaws and all), but I think that was a concept that had a shorter shelf life than the show was allowed.
“No tights, no flights” makes perfect sense for a post-Crisis “Clark Kent in high school” show. But once Clark was in Metropolis almost all the time, working alongside Lois at the Planet, and talking on a superhero alter-ego…? Mf’er, why aren’t you flying yet??
And the less that’s said about how much the Lana romance dragged on (even AFTER Lois was already in the picture!), the better.
As for Welling… yeah, he wasn’t the best, but I don’t think he was the worst either. I’m willing to give a slight benefit of the doubt that, when you take into consideration the point in the character’s life he was portraying, he wasn’t hired to be Christopher Reeve. He was hired to be Jeff East. And I think he did that well enough.
