They did Brainiac on Krypton, but everyone sleeps on that show.

I didn't much care for that show, but its Brainiac was indeed very, very good. Had the air of Doug Bradley as Pinhead. Very grim and threatening.

Yeah it’s a shame it went on as long as it did. But that’s how it is sometimes

This is something I often think about a lot of TV shows in that the vast majority just try too squeeze more story out of a show than there really is available. 10 seasons & 10 years for Smallville was too much, like I enjoyed the show at the time, but purely from a story standpoint 4-6 seasons would have been more than enough.

Having 20+ episodes per season didn't help some of these older shows either, that's something I enjoy about some shows nowadays in 2020+, at least the ones I've been watching, is that rather than 20 episodes with 10 random filler episodes that don't really progress the season's story along, you get 10 episodes that actually make some progress to the overall season story. Not to mention when they're on places like Netflix or Amazon it's easier to binge watch multiple episodes.

Smallville and Krypton were both trash imo, but the latter’s Brainiac was solid.

Smallville's Brainiac was decent overall I thought, just didn't visually look like Brainiac. His origin was however, some form of Kryptonian tech gone out of control if I'm not mistaken, which is hit & miss for me from a story perspective but I tend to like the character of Brainiac not being directly from Krypton. I don't even really like it when they try to make the character basically have some form of hand in the planet's destruction.

Only thing I really liked from Krypton was Doomsday's visual look, arguably, as well as rather depressingly, probably the best looking CGI take of the character to date. Lobo was amusing as well, him having such a strong Irish accent came across quite amusing I thought. Outside of that, I didn't really think much of Krypton, not really much of an interesting story to tell from the characters presented IMO.

Smallville really was probably the low point of the Superman franchise, a completely horrible actor(and that is being kind) in Tom Welling, a completely mediocre actress in Erica Durance(and that is being kind), as well as a horrible portrayal of what a smart, tough, independent female journalist should and could be, a mediocre actress in Kristen Kreuk, two show runners out of their depth, and completely creepy, almost like pedophiles in the producers, bad writing, bad acting, and bad story telling, with bad planning, and you get a sad addition to the Superman universe.\. Add to that the Supergirl tv show, and Man of Steel, and it truly was a low point for everyone associated with Superman.

Give kudos to Tyler for resurrecting the character, or else the character would be on life support.

You're not obligated to like it, but I'm sorry, Smallville's impact is undeniable, it raised a generation of Superman fans.

Forgive me if I misunderstood, but saying that S&L is in any way more popular or impactful than Smallville is just factually wrong.

Ok but do you remember when pa kent got sucked off by a tornado? Like, there have definitely been other low points

Asides from that though, was there anything you didn't like about Smallville? :beaming:

As above, you're not obligated to like it but it's easy to look back now and judge Smallville harshly - for it's acting, casting, effects, etc. Bear in mind it's over 22 years since the first episode aired and the quality (and budgets) of not just TV shows in general, but superhero TV shows has risen stratospherically since then. IIRC it was originally pitched as a young Bruce Wayne show but WB veto'd this as they were intent on making a movie instead (which eventually became Batman Begins), so they chose to go down the Superman route instead.

The thing is, Smallville was never a Superman show, and the producers have restated this many times over the years. It was a teenage Clark Kent show. It certainly has its flaws but overall, I thought it did what it was designed to do and the cast - the vast majority of whom will never win an oscar - did their job to the best of their ability, Welling included. I've never thought any of them were woefully bad actors, just average TV actors - and I've seen worse since then on CW.

Smallville as a Superman show was not good.
Smallville as a guilty pleasure that my wife and I would enjoy was, however.
There is a line in Finding Forrester where the kid asks Sean Connery how he could read trash like the National Enquirer when he was so smart. Connery’s character responds “I read The Times for dinner. But this. This is my desert!” That’s kind of how I view Smallville.

And I will take to my grave that Erica Durance was a great Lois. And obviously Rosenbaum was a great Lex.

I don’t think anyone who’s played Lois since has managed to pull off the quick talking, brave, smart and fearless persona whilst still managing to do it with a wink in their eye - Durance made it look easy.

Amy Adams is a great actress but seemed much less vivacious, and the same goes for Bitsie Tulloch who does a decent job but whose Lois seems more stoic and serious.

I...well, I can't really disagree with that. I adore Tulloch and Hoechlin, but I do think this is a much more serious Lois than we've ever seen, both at work and at home. Not exactly a negative, but it's noticeable how much more serious Lois and Clark are compared to other adaptations. I think part of that comes to them having kids here and that need to protect them influencing them being more serious. Even though there are things that, as parents, they just can't avoid.

Teri Hatcher is the definitive Lois Lane for me currently, followed closely by Erica Durance. However a lot of what makes a good Lois Lane IMO is the chemistry they have with their Clark Kent/Superman, it's not something that is directly tied to acting ability either, it's just one of those things that some actresses have better rapports with certain actors & vice versa.

I really hope that's something Gunn gets right with Corenswet & Brosnahan, as it's the foundation for any good story that exists between the characters.

This is probably why I've not been a fan, I mean the pair do fine, but I prefer the relationship between the characters to have a lot more playful banter than has been depicted in S&L.

That's thing.

We all have different entry points through which we've come to these characters and their mythos.

For some ,the gateway was the comics, for others it was the 90s Animated Series, and for others ,it may have Lois and Clark .

Smallville was likely an entry point to the Superman mythos for alot of younger viewers, back in the day.

It wasn't mine, but that's because I was 22 when the show premiered, and my entry point were The Reeve films in the 80s.

The show was far from perfect, to be sure, but at the same time , I do appreciate there are people who hold fond memories of it.

Teri Hatcher remains the definitive live-action Lois Lane for me, but Erica was one of Smallville’s only bright spots (even though I HATED some of the writing choices with her character there), and Bitsie is pitch-perfect as Mom!Lois, imo.

Rachel has a great shot of dethroning Teri for me, though, IF Gunn manages to write a decent female lead for once.

So what do we make of Variety mentioning Momoa as Lobo? Think he’s the villain here? In Supergirl? They mention it may also be for a solo project.

Lobo would be a tremendously dull choice as the main villain of a Superman movie imo. Maybe as a secondary villain and henchman, he'd be fine. But as the main villain, meh. It'd be funny to make Lobo into a Beetlejuice, Saul Goodman-like huckster character who advertises his services in the most crass way imaginable. That'd suit Gunn's comedic sensibilities as a filmmaker, too.

We have characters involved in this film that I never imagine would be, but even if Lobo does factor into this film, I can’t imagine he’s the villain. Superman has too many actual villains to go at it with to waste Lobo in that slot.

I hope Gunn & WB have learned the lessons from the previous iteration & indeed some of Marvel's recent offerings. Just because a character exists, doesn't mean they have to play a significant or indeed any role in every single story, if the story Gunn is telling includes Lobo, fine but if he's not really relevant to the story, don't bring him in for the sake of it.

As for Mamoa as Lobo, I'm completely fine with it.
