Context influences perception. The Man of Steel suit only “looks” alien because it’s shown to BE alien within the story. Divorced of context, it looks like nothing more than a manmade fabric-based suit with line and print patterns. Just like this suit. So now we’re arguing about what design sensibilities and fabric choices constitute as “alien looking” – an inherently subjective exercise that seems like a waste of time and effort by all parties involved.

If the movie establishes that this is in fact Kryptonian garb, then it’s alien and therefore looks alien as defined by the internal logic of this universe. Simple as that.

The suit very much evokes to me what Morrison/Quitely described the approach to the suit was in All-Star.

Literally every single person I’ve seen defend this suit online has used the defense of “it’s supposed to be homemade”.

If this is Gunn’s attempt at making an “alien” suit, then it’s pretty laughable, especially coming off of Snyder. This thing does look like a high-end cosplay

I'm really curious to see if Gunn also builds out Superman's rogues gallery. We obviously know we are getting luthor and some ultraman/bizarro amalgam. It would be neat if bloodsport was referenced and hints were sprinkled for other superman villains to show up down the line.

I love Corenswet in the role but I gotta say, I’m not loving the suit. I like some of the ideas of it but the execution is just not giving what it’s trying to imo.

The best way I can describe it, is that the suit seems aesthetically confused. So you have this MCU-esque body suit with all the piping, paneling, and segmenting, but then you also add the trunks. It looks like this to me

The trunks only work on a simplistic, clean design. Gunn is clearly going for a retro futuristic aesthetic, so why didn’t he goes go Fleischer?

Nothing about it resembles this though lol lining and piping ≠ MCU

It makes the suit look worse. Again, it looks like a modified Guardians outfit

If Superman showed up in the MCU, he’d look right at home with the Avengers

It doesn’t, but ok. MCU suits are FAR more overdesigned with the piping plus straps and folds all over the place. This clearly isn’t that.

Maybe it is homemade. On Krypton.

You do you, fam. Sorry you don't like it.

Holes? The basis of any crossover, is the odd couple nature of it. Saying Battinson isn't built for the DCU itself is a faulty premise, as would be saying CorenSupes isn't built for Reeves' Batman.
He isn't. Putting David's superman in a matt reeves batman universe would be like putting captain jack sparrow in black sails.

The overall reaction to the suit has been divisive. I’ve seen GA tearing into it on Facebook and Instagram, and even my friends think it looks goofy

It ain’t just me 🤷🏻‍♂️

It does look like an MCU suit but I suspect that is because the costume designer also worked on MCU projects
The strangest thing about it, tho, is that I remember Gunn talking about challenging tired tropes that people are tired of seeing in these films.

I thought this philosophy was going to extend to every aspect of this film, especially the costume. I thought he was going to go for something truly unique e.g Fleischer/Schuster, step outside his comfort zone

But instead, he goes for the same tired segmented design elements that we’ve seen in literally every CBM since Iron Man 😭

I mean, they literally incorporate the signature MCU shoulder chevrons

This suit has “MCU” written all over it, but then he goes and adds the trunks, and IMO it just doesn’t mix. You either embrace the inherent goofy nature of this stuff, or you don’t. You can’t do both! 😭

People tear into anything on Facebook and Instagram. I've never seen a comment section where they were shown a new take on something else and they weren't completely *****ing about it. There were comment sections about the first Cavill reveal ****ting on that costume too.

I think the suit is fine, and once we see a trailer with him in action in it, I'll wager it will look more than fine.
