Aaand there goes the hopes of F4 moving there. As I said before, I think all our July competition is staying put I’m afraid.
Superman and F4 opening so close together when Superman started production a good 3-4 months before just feels like pointless d***-swinging at the expense of their post-production team on Marvel’s part… but I’d still feel a lot safer if we can get this out of being sandwiched between Jurassic and F4.

How Gunn makes everything about him with his own movies is a good thing. Movies should be about the people who make them first and the IP a distant, distant second at best. I also sense an unpleasant egotism about him but stuff like how he was inspired by his own dog for Krypto is lovely.
100%. I think most people who have a strong bond with their pet immediately connected with Gunn's post. Now I can't wait to see what he does with Krypto :)

Do you think there's any chance a large number of people will just... see all of three them? Or am I deluding myself? 😅

There’s always a chance but Supes has the least amount of audience loyalty of those 3 IP’s so it’s gonna have the biggest uphill climb to success. The only way I could ever see it actually winning the battle is if it’s a total slam dunk that had amazing trailers and WOM and the other two just plain sucked lol. Otherwise, we should just be thrilled if it doesn’t get totally squashed.

I know the date is now a sentimental one to Gunn but I think they’d really be wise to move it up and out of July if the post-production is as far along as it sounds and will be totally complete several months before release, but even that feels like a long shot to me.

Disney put FF4 there to compete with Superman.

They want to stop a potential rival at the shoreline and throw it back into the sea.

This isn't the first time Disney has pulled this kind of move.

Fantastic Four is not a guaranteed hit. The Marvels proved that even an MCU movie can flop, and the FF brand has a far worse movie track record than Superman has.

It will be interesting to see which movie performs better. The DCU could be seen as a breath of fresh air compared to stale Marvel, but Marvel could also add a RDJ Doctor Doom cameo to boost interest in FF. A lot of variables here.

Will F4 actually make that date for release? I thought they just started filming not that long ago. Not really keeping up with it tbh.

Everyone was predicting they’d move it to November when they inevitably moved Blade, but they just moved Blade and put a Predator movie in its place so I think F4 is staying put. Based on the footage they’ve shown, it seems like they got a head start on the post/VFX work and whatnot before F4 even started filming so I don’t get the vibe that it won’t make the date.

Honestly? From the looks of it, June isn’t exactly looking packed.

And considering how much Gunn has talked about how well post is going… maybe that’s the move.

The usual haters will bring up the significance of the original release date yet again, but it’s better than getting lost in the shuffle.

If Gunn produces a good Superman movie that hits the 4 quadrants I like its chances to do well even if it is sandwiched between killer dinosaurs and the first family of Marvel. The DCU is just beginning. The DCEU destroyed the fanbase so Superman has to earn back the trust of its fanbase. Not going to lie, I was expecting big numbers for this movie like it was 2016 all over again. The movie is more likely to hit 500 million than a billion and that is ok. It just has to do well critically and with the general audience. That would be a good start to the DCU. It’s the long game Gunn is playing.

I doubt if all three Jurassic 4, Superman, FF4 will be released in the same month. June appears to be wide open. To be honest the one that moves to June will get a head start on the others.

Yeah June looks much better than July. Idk, maybe with MoS and Batman Begins both having that June slot and doing ~ok~ vs TDK, TDKR and Barbie having way more success in July, it’s possible that they feel history has shown July as the better bet? 🤷‍♀️

Maybe, but Wonder Woman did well enough in June, and none of those July releases were sandwiched between two movies gunning for the exact same audience AND with a better track record at the box office.

I just don’t see any advantage in staying put if neither of the other two are budging.

The producers of Oppenheimer tried to pressure Margo Robbie and Greta Gerwig into moving Barbie, and they held firm, and in the end both movies actually benefited from competing with each other because it made both movies an even bigger event than they would have been otherwise.

Could the same thing happen with Superman and Fantastic Four?

No.

Because Oppenheimer and Barbie were counter-programming. Superman and F4 are the same damn program.

No, but it is DC vs. Marvel in a literal sense.
Both of which target the exact same audience demographic. The whole point of counter-programming is targeting different demos.

That said, it’s a totally different situation anyway, because these two movies are two weeks apart, not same day releases. Jurassic World is the bigger threat than F4 I feel.

Jurassic 4 comes out July 2nd. If anything Superman will kill the dinosaur movies second weekend. Superman is going to eat up all the IMax screens from Jurassic and comes out two weeks ahead of fantastic 4. Blockbuster Movies make most of their money in the first few weeks usually. I think Jurassic will move back a week.

No way Jurassic’s vacating the July 4th weekend slot, imo. That’s a holiday weekend and primo slot.

I’m still annoyed Superman didn’t claim that slot to begin with. That would have been ideal for it, and it was wide open when they announced their date. Jurassic World pounced on it pretty late in the game.

Based on the performance of its predecessors, Jurassic in its 2nd week doing more than Superman in its opening weekend is a remote but real possibility, and a horrible prospect. Superman would absolutely be DOA that were to happen. I don’t think it will at all, for the record, but it could, depending on how these trailers land with the GA. F4 opening bigger 2 weeks after Supes is a far more expected outcome and less of a thing to even be worried about imo.

It could happen but you are betting that Jurassic 4 is great and Superman is on the Joker 2 scale with audiences. The IMax screens will still go to Supes. I thought Superman was supposed to come out on the 4th of July originally?

I am absolutely not betting that Jurassic 4 is great. The last few were utter garbage and still made major bank. I am simply betting that audiences still love their dinos regardless of quality, as they have consistently shown. Their loyalty to Superman/DC is faaaar less consistent.

I don’t recall Supes ever being slated for July 4th, but I could be wrong. IMAX screens make a difference but won’t make the gigantic dent in Jurassic’s 2nd weekend that you’re suggesting. They’ll still have multiple screens (and likely 3D) to play up at each theater.

I said a few weeks back June made more sense and now with FF not moving it is really the only move to make. June is almost empty outside of Ballerina, Superman could be mediocre and still have legs enough to ok. If it is as good as we think it will be it will dominate the month and give DC Studios a lot of great press. While I think Jurassic World 4 will suck it will definitely be a problem and I would rather Superman have weeks to itself before dealing with competition...even if I don't fear FF as much as some do.

Blade is going to end up in the "Rogue Squadron Trash Pile" if they dont figure out something soon.

Blade has many issues but I wonder if Ryan Cugler/Michael B. Jordan’s Sinners movie has effected Blade. WB is the studio behind Sinners as well. The Mouse house can’t be happy that those two African American stars signed big deals with WB. Maybe Disney is trying to hurt Superman after all…….. Blade is probably the most popular African American superhero on the big screen next to Black Panther so they want that movie to be good. The issue is lots of vampire movies are coming out in the next two years.
