The Daily Planet - Superman News and Speculation Thread (🚨TAG SPOILERS🚨)

I've never been particularly keen on Metropolis, I've always saw Superman as more of a global hero rather than focused on a single city like Batman.
I still think you need to establish a base with him. Establish his human connections: his work, home, relationships, character building etc. and then go off into space or wherever.

I don't think there's a huge amount to establish, 5 minutes at the Daily Planet as Clark and a short rescue as Superman could be enough to set a baseline for the audience.
Then you can go anywhere.
For example, Brianiac shows up and steals Metropolis, then Superman has to chase him through the cosmos to get it back, facing a few challenges on the way. You could intercut it with shots inside Metropolis, as panic grips the population. Maggie Sawyer leading the police trying to maintain order, with assistance from the Daily Planet, John Henry Irons, Bibbo.
At the end Superman returns all the bottle cities to their home planets, with the exception of Kandor which he takes guardianship of.

I would want a bit more Metropolis than that.

Then again if they cut to Metropolis in the Braniac's bottle, then hey, that's still Metropolis! But I would also like to know Metropolis more and have the audience care for it before it gets taken away by Brainiac.

But unless they tie the Superman movie directly to the Supergirl movie (which is rumoured to be using Brainiac as the villain) then I am no longer counting on Brainiac being the villain in Superman's movie anymore. Maybe down the line if they create a overarching plot that ties in both the Superman and Supergirl movies.

I still dont get how some of you keep living in the past and praising a lot Reeves when MoS is beautiful af, i wish Cavill had the chance to have 3 solo films, ugh, Reeves is my less fave Superman, i still cringe when i remember that scene were he goes bad/drunk

i don't get how people keep living in the past to 2013, "he's called the man of tomorrow not yesterday"

i agree with cavill though

I agree. Snyder really shortchanged us on all of that. I want to see his interactions with Lois at the Planet, whether she knows his identity or not. I want to see his friendship with Jimmy Olsen and a tense mentor/apprentice relationship with Perry. And it would be great to see characters like Bibbo and (especially) Maggie Sawyer show up too.

Yeah, it's actually hard to believe that we've had SEVEN Live Action Superman films ("Justice League" doesn't count as a Superman film) and yet not a single one has dived into exploring Metropolis as a city properly, let alone introducing some of its more famous citizens from the comics.

But then again, we haven't even gotten a live action film that has featured Superman taking on villains past Lex, Zod, or some kind of kryptonian based experiment (Doomsday, Evil Superman, Nuclear Man, etc.) so I guess we shouldn't be that surprised.

See this is why I don't believe that re-introducing a new superman in someone else's film will make a big difference. Why? Because what good will that do if the studio doesn't have a filmmaker or writer lined up willing to tackle the character in the first place? Does putting him in someone else's film change that for him? No.

The whole "getting to know Metropolis and his daily life" thing is partly why I've always enjoyed the character more on TV than in movies.

Yeah, if the life of Clark at the office is what you are looking for, a TV show is a better outlet for that than a film.
When you only have a couple hours it's hard to squeeze in significant time for a half dozen supporting characters, in depth exploration of a fictional city and blockbuster action.
I'm not saying it can't be done, just that in a movie there's only so much time that can be spent on Perry White before other aspects start to suffer.
Whereas a TV show can have a whole episode focused on each significant character.

Well, it’s true that there is more room for that on a TV show, but a movie can pull it off. They did it in the Chris Reeve films, and in terms of more recent examples, we got plenty of Bruce Wayne’s personal life in the Nolan trilogy, plenty of Peter Parker’s life in all the Spidey films, etc. It just requires a writer who finds those interactions meaningful and not a guy who thinks the most interesting thing to do with Jimmy Olsen is turn him into an undercover CIA operative and shoot him in the head.

If Cavill doesn't want to return...simple re-cast the role

Shazam is going to be a box office success. With the tone of Superman at the end of JL there's no reason it shouldn't be able to be as successful as Shazam. People are bragging about how fun the movie is, I can see a MOS sequel accomplishing the same thing.

I wouldn't rush into anything. Find a director with a clear vision on how to go forward and give them the flexibility to proceed how they want and with who they want.

Regarding Shazam,
do you think they should put Superman in the sequel? I haven't seen the film yet, but I know Superman makes a cameo appearance (from the neck down at least). Whether Cavill plays the character or not, should WB use Shazam 2 to reignite interest in Supes and then if the response is positive, give him another film of his own?

He really loves the role, there is no indication he doesn't want to continue.

Snyder’s interpretation of Superman’s World comes with Cavill. It’s going to be hard to make a narrative shift with the battle of Metropolis and Death of Superman attached.

That’s not exactly what people are saying. You build out based on how people in Clark’s orbit react to the same plot/ villain.
Lois, Clark, General Lane will all react to Brainiac differently and bring them into conflict with each other.

We don’t need thirty minutes on Perry’s morning routine.

First contact with aliens MOS was based entirely on Johnathan’s perspective (despite he’s own action to adopt an alien contradicting his philosophy). We never really saw anyone react to an alien. They reacted the same as they would to Lex or Suicide Squad.

If Henry Cavill ends up staying in the role of Superman then really I wonder what can they really do with the character? I mean MOS basically was the first film of the DC Cinematic Universe...well it was the first film to truly have this universe take off and MOS never really got a sequel either so what can they really do? Reboot the franchise all over again yet again or don't even give Superman his own franchise but just have him show up in other DC films from here on out...I don't know...I mean at this point what can be done?

I was already really loving the idea of an animated Superman movie, but after watching into the spider-verse? It’s all I want :funny:

I kinda disagree, respectfully. Bruce Wayne in a movie gets plenty of time to show case his two/three sides - playboy/businessman, orphaned son. The same, just a different angle could be used for Clark.

Eh, his playboy/billionaire life is never really fleshed out at all. Just barely touched on usually, imo. But with Batman, that makes sense, because that life isn't really him at all. With Supes, his work as a reporter and his relationships at the Planet are REAL and should have far more time devoted to them, imo.

Any comment after the vision of Shazam?
IMO there are many interesting things to debate, expecially reguarding Cavill.

For the sequel, I want Black Adam and superman
. Make BA stronger than shazam, stronger than superman.
When they first meet, have billy/shazam think it's gonna be a cake walk because of his past successes.
He instead gets his behind kicked.

He goes into seclusion as billy, his ego badly damaged.
He is watching t.v. and sees black adam terrorizing his city while screaming for him to come back and face him.
Superman shows up and has a go. He fares no better against BA.
Several hours later billy hears a knock on his door.
He opens it and its clark kent.
After a long pep talk by clark/superman, They team up and go after black adam together.

Not sure who should play supes. I'd love for cavill to come back but I'm fairly certain he is done.

In the movies you see enough to know he comes across to some as a playboy, businessman , tortured individual - those aspects of his character, you don't really need to flesh out - ofcourse we as comic readers know more back story than say the GA, and then ofcourse, batman. So i feel a good writer is able to show us clark the reporter, clark the farm boy and superman with quality writing without missing something else as a result.

Shazam ⚡
Anybody saw that supes had a new suit in the shazam cameo?

Yes, dash of hot rod red!!!

Snyder’s interpretation of Siperman’s World comes will Cavill. It’s going to be hard to make a narrative shift with the battle of Metropolis and Death of Superman attached.

It didn't effect people too negatively with all the 'spoilers' 'spoilers' 'spoilers'
